is it actually possible to see the difference? or is it just contrarians?
>>
you dont get it. the difference is that one is bloat and the other lightweight and seeks way faster
>>
Depends on how you've configured them and what your source file is. I don't think I've ever heard someone praise VLCs upscaling
>>
>>107592520
vlc is pretty lightweight though
>>
>>107592531
>I don't think I've ever heard someone praise VLCs upscaling
I dont think ive heard someone praise mpvs upscaling
>>
>>107592470
Mpv won. cope.
>>
I didn't notice a difference and I prefer the controls of VLC.

>>107592520
Just watch the video, you don't need to be constantly seeking.
>>
>>107592549
you're right, went and looked at file sizes and i was making shit up. i guess the settings and slow seek times make it feel 'bloated' is more what i meant
>>
>>107592597
>you don't need
you have no idea of my use case you pretentious nimwit. step down a notch; you are not as smart as you think you are. i know mommy (who you live with) tells you you're special though

i use vlc because it was popular when i was a kid. i pretty much only use it to watch porn. vnr
>>
>>107592599
the players are pretty similar
i use vlc for watching random video files, and mpv for sitting down and actually watching torrents of anime/tv shows
>>
>>107592632
why vlc for random? why not just use mpv
>>

It's only based if you're a retard.

>>107592646
if you click on an audio it runs in the background and you have to close it with task manager
also it has garbage controls

Yes. I know it's a wrapper but still
>>
>>107592470
One has terrible interface the other have problems with seeking.
>>
>>107592470
>is it actually possible to see the difference?
Yes. Even if we only look at upscaling, VLC uses bicubic by default iirc and mpv uses lanczos and the difference is obvious. VLC is meant to be simple and fast, mpv is meant to be high-quality and highly configurable. Both have a lot of features.

I did checks

mplayer
mpv
smplayer
vlc

VLC uses the most doorknock
>>
>>107593051
the UI is still bad
and using mpv without the command line feels wrong, but with the command line it takes too long to launch

mpv is the coomer's player of choice. got a huge collection you wanna zip through? bind next & previous to your mouse wheel and there you go. Seriously tho, the only thing vlc has going for it are the better on screen controls, mpv is better in every other way. And even the controls aren't an issue if you take 2 minutes to edit your input.conf

On the latest 2025 mpv the non third party playlist is so cool. Before that I used mpcqt for the playlist
just type g then p to activate it or click on the 3 horizontal lines hamburger button then playlist. Here is my configs with a png image of the mpv logo that always appears (cover.png) vid=1 makes sure its selected if there is no video. I figured this out myself without Grok.

--shuffle
--volume=84
--gapless-audio=yes
--audio-file-auto=no
--cover-art-auto=no
--cover-art-files=~/.config/mpv/cover.png
--vid=1

Additional configs for my default mpv wrapper on a 1920x1080 monitor. I wrote all of it myself except for the demuxer part, that was Grok for youtube buffering.

 --geometry=50%:50% --autofit=500 --autofit-smaller=360x800 --force-window --loop-playlist \
--cache=yes --cache-secs=60 --demuxer-seekable-cache=yes --demuxer-max-bytes=200M "$@" &

additional mpv wrappers that make auto nightcore/daycore music. Also made myself (not with Grok)

Daycore (slow low pitch music)
--volume=81 --geometry=50%:50% --autofit=500 --autofit-smaller=360x800 --force-window --loop-playlist \
--cache=yes --cache-secs=60 --demuxer-seekable-cache=yes --demuxer-max-bytes=200M --audio-pitch-correction=no --speed=0.60 "$@" &

Nightcore (fast high pitch music)
 --volume=81 --geometry=50%:50% --autofit=500 --autofit-smaller=360x800 --force-window --loop-playlist \
--cache=yes --cache-secs=60 --demuxer-seekable-cache=yes --demuxer-max-bytes=200M --audio-pitch-correction=no --speed=1.35 "$@" &

I have both installed and just use mpv. I don't even have a config file. I've also replace feh with mpv --pause.

Unironically yes
I save long Chaturbate streams and I need fast seeking to quickly look for anything interesting happening in hours long videos
>>
>>107592470
changing playback rate is seamless on mpv. On VLC it causes lagspikes and also subtitles
mpv's documentation on add-on development is clear. I've just spent 7mins looking for vlc and found only a little.
Mpv works well from the command line
Also mpv doesn't have a border. It's pure content.
All of these are why I use mpv on the desktop.
Also mpv on android has better scrubbing than vlc on android. I use both apps.
Having said that, vlc is more powerful. If mpv can't play a specific m3u8, I chuck it in vlc
