If someone did that to my code we'd be able to easily know by it calling GEGL and GMIC. From what I understand legally their code can be closed but if they modify my code and post it online it must be open.The same could be said about other open source libraries being dependent. That is how people may know.

GPL is based on the correct principle that NOT distributing the source along with the binary requires either social or technical hacks or both that do not need to be tolerated. GPL assumes no distinction between source and binary except possible user convenience and distribution pattern. there is no technical difference, they are both "the software" so they by all reason should both be distributed to anyone the software is available to. NOTHING in GPL prevents you from closed betas, only collabing with a small group, only releasing to a small group of users. and says nothing about keeping secrets. you can keep all the secrets you want. but to whomever you give the software out, DO NOT use slimy tricks against them to restrict their access to only a side-effect of your code (compiled binary). you are doing them a disservice.
