Why aren't they relasing 1080p movies on DVD? You could easily fit a 1080p movie on a DVD disc with modern codecs and compression techniques like H.264 MPEG-4 AVC H.264 MP4 AV1 VP8 VP9 WEBM and other.
Botnet codecs
this is a really stupid question>>>/g/sqt
>>107596944Because the entertainment industry wants to to use streaming media, then when you want to watch a movie you have to pay them every time, "You'll own nothing and be happy"
>>107596944Truthfully it's because manufacturers cheap out on CPUs so much that it's not possible to playback new codecs without the assistance of hardware decoders. Like 99% of DVD players lack any modern codec decoders and would utterly choke on anything more resource intensive than baseline H264.
>>107596944Standards.There’s a trillion DVD players out there that wont play them.> just release it as a fileThey’re still trying to put the DeCSS genie back in the lamp.
It's a bit late for this kind of thing. Even bluray is 20 year old tech at this point. something like this has happened before though, VCD used mpeg-1 while SVCD, which still uses regular CDs uses mpeg-2note that while you can put newer formats on a disc, it won't play on a dvd player. At best you could make a bluray/avchd format movie and out that on a physical dvd to play on a bluray player, but it won't cost much less than using a bluray disc
>tfw BEgods only get manyuu hikenchou, kagaku na yatsura, and seikon no qwaser to jerk off to for the rest of our lives and that's it, meanwhile furfags, futafags, and inflationniggers get infinite slop foreverIt's beyond over
>>107597049This is the answer OP.
>>107597095Aren't most DVD players manufactured in last 20 years compatible with at least DivX? You could always just pack in a second standard DVD disc just in case the DivX one doesn't work, it will just cost $0.50 more.
>>107597183idk how common divx support is, but even if it was universal, that still doesn't mean it'll play HD media, and the quality won't be great at 1080p anyway, since divx is mpeg4 part2, the one between mpeg2 and h.264/avc. an 8GB 1080p avc movie looks alright, mpeg4p2 not so much
>>107596944Because DVD is a fixed playback standard, not just storage. DVD-Video only allows SD MPEG-2 video, and DVD players are built to decode only that. A 1080p H.264/AV1 file on a DVD would not play on normal DVD players.Blu-ray already exists for 1080p with guaranteed compatibility, higher bitrates, and better quality, so there’s no incentive to invent an “HD DVD” variant that would break compatibility and confuse buyers.
>>107596944They did. Video CD and DVD were a thing.
most of the hardware they're using don't support much. or inthe case of something h265 their dvd players cant handle it lol
this actually already exists, divx, the company, tried to do that, if you have a "divx plus hd" certified dvd player, you can use that. Considering that's from 2009 however, it'll probably be able to play blurays as well anyway
why was there never a physical format for 720p
>>107597592because it came out alongside 1080p/1080i and was from the beginning a poorfag option. it let them make cheaper panels and still call them "HD", and probably also to make 1080 ones more expensive because they were the "premium" option
>>107597592they could've, but dvd sales were already insanely popular at the time. they knew a 1080p format was just around the corner, so introducing a 720p format as a stop-gap would only cannibalize dvd sales and anger customers. it'd be almost like what sega did with the 32x and the neptune.
Is Japan the last bastion for physical media? I think they still release pornos and gravure idol photoshoots in DVD.
>>107597677Maybe it'd have made sense if 720p came out separately and first, but few people had hdtv's at all in 2006 when bluray came out.there was potentially a market for it, like a cheaper dvd-based format aimed at the lower end of people who got 720p tv's, but format adoption is hard enough, there are several failed disc media formats most don't even know about
>>107597592its called hd-dvd
>>107597160>furfagsbut Ayana
>>107597677its funny tho, because i dont think bluray sales ever made a dent in dvd sales
>>107597845Girl with ears and tail != furry
>>107597049Thanks for explaining, that's interesting
>>107596944Modern codecs aren't written into the DVD specs.
>>107596944those codec don't exist on standalone dvd players.
>>107596964Is there any truth to this?
