In any case, some will have bigger chances, some will have smaller, but how useful they turn out to be is the important thing. Look at Linux Mint for instance - before the days of Mint making its own DE it wasn't hugely different from Ubuntu. However, it did have all the proprietary codecs and other stuff easily accessible, offered various DEs without having to switch to another *buntu, avoided the one bit of sponsored bullshit that Ubuntu had as opt-out for awhile, etc.. but people found it useful and its dev put in a good amount of effort even before the custom DEs. So distros that vary just a bit aren't exactly new.
