Can I ask for a $15k raise if my boss has repeatedly said to me that he wants to pay me more? I make $60k rn as a software developer in California. If I wasn't living with my parent's I'd be lucky to have $10k in savings
>>
>>107617099
>I make $60k rn as a software developer in California.
anon... what the fuck are you doing with your life?
for how long have you been working there? you should tell your boss to double your salary or something, or to fuck off and die. you are the cheapest programmer your boss could find, probably, and are being exploited as such.
>>
>>107617202
>for how long have you been working there?
It's my first job out of college. I've been here for a year and they bought me a $50k car as a promotion gift 4 months in (technically it isn't mine since it's only mine while I work at the company but they pay for all of the maintenance and I have no restrictions as far as number of miles I can drive per month, etc). $60k is the starting salary where I work but I've excelled and have exceeded expectations that go beyond a typical entry level role. I'll be happy with $15-20k more, anything more than that is probably pushing it
>>

>technically it isn't mine since it's only mine while I work at the company but they pay for all of the maintenance and I have no restrictions as far as number of miles I can drive per month, etc)
have you calculated how much you have saved by having this car? probably not much at all
also, are you fully in office?
I'm not american, but judging from what you are saying and what others say about life + salaries in california, you should be asking for far more than $20k. problem, of course, is that you risk getting a "no". maybe you should ask your coworkers or something about their wages.
is it a big tech company? if so, they should be able to pay more.
why hasn't your boss given you a raise already? why would you need to ask in the first place?
your best option would be to find another much better paid job (that's the usual strategy for getting big wage raises in tech), though seeing how bad things are in murica it might be kinda hard. OTOH, if you are comfortable at your current place and don't really spend or plan on spending much more in the future, I guess you shouldn't worry much. getting more money is always nice, though.

Well my ancient car died on me about 3 weeks before the promotion and my boss asked if I needed anything, to which I replied, a car. When I was looking at prices during those 3 weeks, it was gonna cost $300/month for something decent, and the car they gave me is brand new and really nice. Leasing/financing it would have easily been $600/month. So at the absolute minimum, they saved me $3600/year but they gave me a car that probably would've cost double that
>also, are you fully in office?
Yes but they're flexible and I gather business requirements since I'm a team lead of this big project so it's mostly out of necessity, not because I have to be in the office all the time
>is it a big tech company?
Nah, it's a startup
>why hasn't your boss given you a raise already?
He's explained that he wants to do performance reviews for everyone after we finish our current projects, which I was fine with at first but the deadlines keep getting pushed because of so many lagging, external factors. The current deadline is the first or second week of January, which isn't long from now. I genuinely do love working here and I've learned way more in the past year than I probably would have doing any other job, they really just let the developers have at it and there are some really great technical leads that I've learned a ton from too. I just want more money, that's it, other than that I love my job

On top of being generally distasteful, most of my normie site tracking data is probably made up from extreme pornography and hardware stores. If any of the milquetoast losers who post on a thread like this is on a List, it's me.

>>
>>107617774
I don't believe in gas as a weapon because it requires far too much preparation for the force assaulting into it, dissipating the element of surprise, and it's indiscriminate, which means it's that much harder to protect my own force and/or civilians while utterly destroying the enemy. Mine warfare, on the other hand, is advanced enough to be fair game if only you'd spend a little money or at least have some intern put dots on a map.

Anon you are being raped. I fucking got more from my first job out of college as a gov software tester 10+ years ago.

Your car means shit if the pay is so low you'd be living in a cardboard box w/o your parents. Actually, maybe they gave the car to you as a housing bonus.

Anyways, ask for raise and try to look at other jobs near you for a feel of what you should be making. Shit go look up a federal pay table and add 20k to what you see if you need a start (hint you'd be grade 7-9 fresh out of school by said table).

It's good to be able to take crisis easily but is it that you are unfettered or are you just stupid?

People who are truly unbothered by anything never improve and have nothing to offer. I don't mean that in a mean way; but if you have no complaints, everything is going well, and we all know that that's not true. But there's a difference between going "It's fucked up, but it's fixable or mitigatable" and "It's fucked up, but I genuinely don't care"
>>

Everything's in place. How do I grow up?

It feels like so long since I was a rookie before, and I was so much braver but so less powerful then. I'm still the new guy, and that is not the problem. I am confident in what few skills I have; I didn't lie in my interviews. I'm a rookie again, but knowing that I don't know shit as a real adult now, and knowing how touchy big corporations are and how systems are and shall be as designed, I dunno, I'm not fucking trauma team I don't have liability insurance for this. If it were at the unit I'd be like "Fuck it, I told you do do it, so tell them I told you to do it" but now that I have someone who says that, it's not that I don't feel safe doing it, I feel like something might be disabled forever and now regardless of liability or whatever it's a me problem forever.

And it's not like I'm uncomfortable changing a card or whatever, but a lot of this junk is far beyond end-of-life. If my ESD strap fails and there's a jolt, it's over. If one pin somewhere bends, it's over. I don't worry so much that I'll do it, but things happen, and the nature of repairs with limited parts makes things dumb. If one little bracket is found to be stripped in one screw hole, it's not like we can just order a new one or even throw some bondo in there. At home I would proudly drive a screwdriver in there and use a die set to cut new thread. Maybe 3d print some shit at the library. Maybe just use some dipshit "mending plate" in its place. In a real company, you can't do that.

At home I would gladly attack any device with any tool I have; even at work, it's not about maintaining SLAs or pretending like I'm not an embarrassing lunatic. If something is stripped, or some card failed, it can't just be so easily replaced with an equivalent. hick shit has no place in commercial venture. niggas got contracts and shit, and occasional inspections.

I just want things to work, and to be let do what I have to do to make things work.

I've only not made top score among the section at a range day once. I missed literally one shot, and while I don't distinctly remember it, the C7 has a problem where the trigger doesn't reset properly so the next pull is always inconsistent. I dunno if it's a general AR platform thing or just the C7, but I don't like it. I put clean holes in dimes at 20m with a .177 and am accurate enough with a pistol for combat. Unfortunately, I'm a huge pussy and have never taken a rifle combat shooting course anyway and am horrendously out of shape, and they only draw snipers from infantry despite how far you can walk without complaining, so it's IT for me. They probably have homing lasers these days anyway

Nothing has inherent meaning; the only thing that has meaning is ourselves, our allies, and the hope for a future!
