So I got the new macbook pro m5, 16gb of ramWas a bit disappointed at first that idling it was using 40% of ram, kinda high no?Well then I opened safari+20 tabs, davinci resolve and about more 20 different apps and it only jumped to 70%What's happening here? What's it doing to the ram to make it take so much? It should be swapping already with so much shit open no?
>>107617616>16GB RAM in 2026even my grandpa's dual-core ideapad has 24 dude
>>107617635well if I can open a bunch of shit that I will never open and have it all running and I'm still at 70% I guess I don't need more
>>107617616
>>107617616My M2 that I got years ago has 32GB, wtf is wrong with you getting only 16GB in current year?
>>107617658I'm only complaining that it uses too much when idling, it seems to manage it pretty well after I start opening a bunch of shit
somebody allow my laptop to function
somebody sell me a new laptop
fucking criminals
>>107617616amount of ram at "idle" is meaningless because most of it is cache. mac has good ram compression by default, linux equivalent is zram, and windows does it too to some extent afaik. basically pages that don't need to be accessed frequently will be compressed and then a page fault performs decompression when they're accessed. also don't listen to retards 16gb ram is a lot
macOS generally manages memory better than windows (and linux)
