Why are tiny laptops so unpopular compared to smartphones?
>>
Because you can't type with more than 2 fingers on a keyboard that small.

Because for what people use it for, a smartphone is a better form factor.
UMPCs have their own use cases.

Why bother with the eck when I can just slap some controllers on my phone

The way phones & tablets are locked down and only one USB port I want one of those tiny laptops or a cyberdeck, because I am absolutely pissed at bigtech having admin/root over my hardware/software

because i got the ek almost for free after selling a few knifes.

no. it is retardedly priced. It is weaker than a Steam Deck and a Steam deck is much cheaper than the actual price as slavs like me work in CS2 on case drops and the 569 euro price is more like ... 200 euro give or take. on the other hand the cheapest GPD device is 650 dollars, so like 600 euro. More than the Steam Deck and you have to actually give the money.

Had the product been outstanding i would understand it costing so much more than the competition but GPD devices are also known to be kinda crappy.

If your main point is that GPD devices are for work and not gaming than the steam deck is almost as mobile and capable of a work machine. The truth is that GPD devices are too expensive to be considerable. The worst thing yet is that China is making more and more devices that are price competitive to the Steam Deck and as a result the market GPD competes in is shrinking.

Only place GPD devices are found are 4chan /g/ shitpost. they do not exist in the wild. Gaming Handhelds from Lenovo and Valve exist in the wild and are much more appropriately priced.

furthermore, engineers that need mobile work, usually use laptops. the GPD is retardetly priced out of the market. A Chuwi Hi10 Max is what i would recommend for people who need mobility and work on the go. You cannot game on it much but you can launch heroes 3 on it too. It costs 350 euros - still like 2-3 times cheaper than a GPD device.

The pricing of GPD devices is what makes me auto ignore them whenever i consider a new device. The fact that they are also known to be shit is just the cherry on the top - they have as good build quality as the Chuwi, and in many cases are as good as it for gaming but at 3x the price. GPD devices are also most of the case 2x the price of the Steam Deck when it is in many cases much better.

If GPD have no honest prices, than they deserved to be memed as the "overpriced apple wanna be devices". Their devices are neight for work or for gaming at least not on any competitive pricing level.

Smartphones are more efficient with battery usage and the elites are jewing you into using them by making banks require phones.
Tablets are almost useless and a netbook makes infinitely more sense, so that there might just be caused by normies being dumb.

>>107623537
The GPD pocket 4 is actually far cheaper than equivalent laptops with the same hardware. There are chinkpads with weaker ryzens and the same 32GB of RAM that go for far more than what the pocket costs. I sincerely doubt that chuwi is anywhere near the build quality of the pocket. The keyboard is the weakest point and people had problems with it, but otherwise everything including the hinge is actually well designed and built.

YOU BAITED ME!!!! I wasted my time to see the price of the GPD pocket 4 and it is 1500 dollars??? Who is buying this shit? 1500 dollars? really? if you are having the money and like it than buy it, but I personally can tell you that i will not give more than 600 euro for a handheld or even more than 800 euro for a work laptop. No. I do not care about modern gaming and a GTX 1650 8 gb VRAM is enough for me for mobile gaming. I would consider some GPUs like the Nvidia 4060 12 gb or the AMD 9060 xt 16gb for gaming on a normal pc and not more.
Still even if I am to build a normal PC I would probably make it for around 1200 dollars and it will be able to play every game i ever want and do all the work i want.

I am not giving 1500 dollars for what is essentially a gimick - those handhelds are shit for work with their small screens and they are also not really all that good for gaming.

Stop recommending 1500 dollars handhelds - if the price is over 600 it is a meme for rich fucks.

although, to be honest, there does seem to be an option for 900 dollars - still too much but i would just let it pass. its too expensive i would not consider it, but if you have the money, it is a good deal i guess.

>BUT TOUCH SCR--
Imagine smearing your display instead of using glorious trackpads for the function. LMAO. Chinks can't even.

GPD has been around longer than the Deck and STILL can't resolve the notorious thermal issues it's had for a decade plus two years now.

It's a meme device for people with more money than sense until they resolve that.

actually the one for 900 dollars is no longer available... what the fuck? the cheapest option you can actually buy is 983 dollars. This is just a meme. just buy a Steam Deck. 569 euro vs 983 dollars - yea right
>>
>>107623897
the way i see it, if they reduce all of their prices by 50% the product is actually good for the price. but man, this alone means that the current price is 100% higher than it should be.
>>
>>107623907
I'm guessing it's just economies of scale. Not many people buy them which causes them to be niche and expensive which causes people not to buy them. My advice is building your own. It's gonna be janky and definitely not powerful but could be a pretty cool project.

the thing about the general concept of those devices is that they are really fucking good for a lot of stuff in theory: make your school, ppt presentation on the bus home, write some landing page concept using LLMs on the metro white travelling toward work, play some heroes 3 under the blanked on your bed, while falling asleep - those devices are top tier for a lot of use cases.... and the price ruins it all.

did i also mention that you can also play heroes 3 while driving? The possibilities could be endless.
>>
>>107624181
I mean you can do most of those on a phone too, or use a 7 inch tablet with a keyboard case. The appeal of these devices for me is simply them being x86 AND being as compact as phones or small tablets. I can run GNU+Linux on it with no problems or compromises.
>>
>>107622667
I used to love GPD stuff, last one I had was the original Win Max. The problem is they're not competitive or useful anymore.

My phone is a better pocket computer and actually fits in my pocket. Cheap Android/Linux handhelds are more portable for gaming. The Deck, Ally, and others are better PC gaming handhelds. My laptop is better for productivity and no less portable.

Also, streaming works so well now that I don't see the point over a light client. Apollo/Moonlight are seamless even over a VPN.

That's point. You're paying for your liberty: no more data harvesting and 24/7 spyware means you also forsake the steep discount given to lure you in. I can't afford it tho, so I'll keep being a slave until I can. Goof luck to you as well.
>>
>>107624763
>no more data harvesting
GPD devices regularly come with malware, which GPD always blames on an "infected QA drive." I've experienced it myself.
>>
because they use windows for the OS which runs terribly on their weak hardware
>just use linux
even less people would buy it

GPD Win 4 actually has amazing specs.

>>107624778
Same. But always install a new OS yourself anyways, no matter who the manufacturer is or where you got it, just a general rule of thumb.
>>
>>107624778

Yeah, again, have a look at other laptops that have the Ryzen HX 370, they're all gonna cost much more and all of them are going to have their RAM soldered. You might argue that a mini laptop will never need that level of performance, but you could say that for any laptop on the market. Yeah, thermals will probably be a bit worse on a housing that small, but thermals in laptops suck in general.

I will say that it is true that the Pocket could use an even weaker and cheaper option, but in that case it might be worth considering the Pocket 3 that has an intel chip as it's considerably cheaper. Don't know about the reliability and other aspects of the 3 tho.

And yeah, currently it seems they offer the Pocket 4 with HX 370 /w 32GB of unified RAM and the 887-something with 16GB, but as time passes, they run out of stock on both of them so you have to wait for the next batch
