Damn. i got excited about tape storage after seeing 20TB rolls for $50then I saw the prices for tape drives$5000 for a cheap one
>>107629743Yeah it do be like that. Just buy 2-bit MLC SSDs if you can't "recharge" your 3-bit SSD once a year, I heard they're supposed to protect data for 10-20 years powered off. If you NEED your chinese cartoons to survive 100 years then neither tape drives nor 2-bit MLC SSDs will suffice, only m-discs can give that kind of data retention.
A good tape drive will last you a lifetime and it will pay for itself if you´re storing 500Tb or more of data
>>107629838"Lifetime" actually means 10-20 years depending on climate control. After that it rots and your data is kaput. Which makes 2-bit MLCs better since you can "recharge" them.
>>107629743Is there any way to rent or use a communal tape drive?
>>107630124Yeah offer up your boy pussy to me and you can use mine #)
>>107629827one of my SSDs is a QLC, do they drop like flies if you don't "recharge" them?
>>107630370Depends how worn out they are. Fres ones might be okay for a few years at best but they only have a few hundred P/E cycles before the NAND is literally cooked. The real problem is they're barely cheaper than TLC SSDs which should be illegal desu.
>>107630383> barely cheaper than TLC SSDsI suppose that's just what you get when there's still way less competition than in the TLC market.
>>107630164Your boy pussy or your communal tape drive?
>>107629743Buy decommissioned ones from enterprises. You can get LTO drives that do 20TB for much, much cheaper.
