READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

reposting from old thread. >>107648111

is there a good selfhosted solution for switch management?
preferably something vendor agnostic.
it should be abel to
>configure swtiches from central management
>do backusp of configs
>initialize/deploy switches

i have cisco, microtic and hp swiches at home.
while i could ssh into all of them stuff can get tedious.
i want something where i can just do things like define a vlan and that gets then pushed and created on all my switches and i only have to configure a singular interface to use it and all my trunks will get it automatically.
is there something liek that?

just run a script or something

i tried ansible stuff but half the things didnt really work.
i was wondering if there is something more convenient.

Who is that elf? and can you post more?

im not a fan of ansible. You could just use python with either paramiko or netmiko modules. Or an inventory manager that you write backup jobs for on a 24h cadence or something. Host nautobot and forgejo and push backups to forgejo as well as host your jobs that you want to run (written in python but you can also hack shit together to run subprocess commands)

Well if you're good and do lots of talking about home servers, I'll post another one for the next op.

>uploading games to my romm server
>realize afterwards my nas nfs share isn't even mounted on the server
>have no idea where the fuck the games I uploaded are in the filesystem
Wut do?

Either externally, like USB-C power brick or from PCIe, I'm not sure if this one uses standby power when PC is off, but usually they should.

A cute urban elf named Jina. Not to be confused with Luna, her daughter.

why even write a tutorial tho, everyone knows about image search.
im avoiding it because it has been so shit and not efficient/fast for me (they ruined it), maybe thats why others dont bother too.

Networking world is generations behind when it comes to automation. I moved from DevOps to network engineering, and was shocked by the state of things. Ansible is still considered cutting edge. Good luck finding anything that isn't total shit.

>>107648450
First time I saw that elf, it took me like 15 (literally) seconds to find the artist.

Half of the timer the vendor solution doesn't even work what world do you live in?

im seeing now that networking is in a bit of a fucked situation.
im starting to see why people like unifi so much nowadays.
