How do you you know get by? How do you commute, meet with friends, anwear some work related stuff on the go. There is no chance that you can still live a life without a smartphone. At least if you live in a city.

if i need to get somewhere i just look it up on google maps/travel plotter/public transport info sites
actually, i had to plan routes even before google maps was a thing. we had a city map at home

its really not a big deal
if i had to have access to office stuff 24/7 then yeah, i would get a smartphone, that would constitute a legitimate reason to own one for me

I want to own the phone, pixel and fairphone are the only ones you can buy, apple stuff you can only rent as they keep ownership of the software and can do whatever they want with the device even after the sale (including remotely take control of it and disable it if they see fit). atleast on pixel you can install grapheneos and actually own YOUR device that you BOUGHT.
