hello. i've been a macbook user for the past decade and am currently running an 8 year out of date version of macos. i want to switch to linux now. which distro should i pick?
>>
>>107678529
I have no idea how someone could break their system by downloading a language pack lmao...
Well first, tell us exactly what did you download and how did you install it, did you use 'apt install' on some shady .deb or .ppa?
>>
>>107678685
>which distro should i pick?
doesn't really matter, just don't pick a shit distro (like arch) or a meme distro (like bazzite/nobara/cachy)
>>
>>107678720
I got it off the software center which I assumed was slightly better than just downloading random .deb or .ppa off of github or a website.
I probably won't go for a minimal install next time, so much work and overhead to get what you want to work.

You could have just left it at arch lol
>>
Every distro that isn't Debian based is a meme.

It's stuff like this that makes non immutable distros seem neolithic

How exactly will the machine not boot? is there any error messages?
Does the bootloader (I assume it's grub) work?
If yes, does the kernel load?
If yes, does systemd load?
If yes, do you get a TTY login screen?
If yes then your system does indeed boot, but you have no GUI, in that case it's easier to fix, and the issue is probably with the login manager and/or desktop environment.

>>107678778
One big problem with graphical software managers is that they will sometimes remove conflicting packages without telling you, potentially borking the system, i am not sure if this is exactly what happened here but it could be possible.

>How exactly will the machine not boot? is there any error messages?
The software won't boot, the machine still does
>>
>>107679002
What is your login manager? can you launch it manually from the TTY?
I'm going to guess you're using lightdm and systemd, in that case try running
>sudo systemctl status lightdm.service
to see if your login manager is running, if it's not then run
>sudo systemctl start lightdm.service
to start it manually, if there are error messages then post them so i can see
