I am regularly amazed that we pretend folders are the right way to organise files. They’re entirely arbitrary. Every competent file system ignores them to its best ability. Why can’t I have a file in two folders? Why does one have to be a “reference”? Why can’t I filter for files that exist in 3 folders with X extension?

We’ve been played for absolute fools.
>>
they are easy to use and understand
you can make a tagging system if you want, but you'll spend hours tagging adding a million different tags to your files so you can maybe find them easily later

>They’re entirely arbitrary.
any way to organize files is equally arbitrary

>Why can’t I have a file in two folders? Why does one have to be a “reference”?
that's an issue with files more than with folders

>Why can’t I filter for files that exist in 3 folders with X extension?
file manager issue

>Why can’t I have a file in two folders?
You mean like hard links?

skill issue. have you heard the good word about our lord and savior the command line?
>>

>Why can’t I have a file in two folders?
But you can.

>Why does one have to be a “reference”?
It doesn't. Use a hardlink. Which even Windows supports by the way.

Hierarchy is always faster than tags

any way to organize data is arbitrary
>Why does one have to be a “reference”?
it's ALWAYS a "reference" even if you have one file
>Why can’t I filter for files that exist in 3 folders with X extension?
you can... ask your favorite chatbot

the only thing I miss sometimes from the usual filesystems are tags, sometimes it's easier to have a "bucket" of files with tags you can search, this is why I use sqlite for this.

Graphs would have been better but folders essentially are graphs with symlinks.
>>

>Why can’t I have a file in two folders? Why does one have to be a “reference”?
Both have to be references.
You can have a file in two directories (lol, "folders") precisely because directories store references.
>>
>>107681857
>Why can’t I have a file in two folders?
You can. It's called a hard link.
>>
>>107681857
I prefer folders for project files and tags for anything else.
>>107682120
Cool in theory but if I wanted to delete a file from my computer I'd have to track down each link.

Bait thread. Almost got me.

Which is literally O(1).

I have a lot of files. The other day I actually did try using the find command to find where a hard link was and it took a solid minute. I've switched to using soft links but now I can't move or rename my reference file without breaking links lol lmao
>>
Folders are fine
Linux is the one that is wrong and is the only one that doesn't understand how they work

Sounds like what you want is a soft link then.

It's gotten even worse since then btw
Most don't even know what a file is any more

Well /g/? Where do you put the file?

/dev/null

>"They see it like one bucket, and everything's in the bucket."
To be fair, that's how it has been presented to them through their phones and tablets.
Apparently that's how the first digital file systems were too, or so I've heard. But people quickly found that unmanageable and implemented a directory tree.
I guess the more modern way to organise your data might be through tags.
>>
>>107681857
in everday use the folder structure is irrelevant for the most part since I use searches (e.g. find, fzf). folders are for pointing programs to
>>
>>107683216
Do you rename every file you download or do you just memorize the file name for everything you save?
>>
>>107681857
>They’re entirely arbitrary
Yes, I - as the user of the computer - arbitrarily decide how I would like the files to be organized. As it should be.
>Why can’t I have a file in two folders?
You can though. Just make another hard link.
>Why does one have to be a “reference”?
What exactly do you think a "reference" is in the first place?
>Why can’t I filter for files that exist in 3 folders with X extension?
What exactly is stopping you? This is some feature request for a file search program, not for a file system.
>>
>>107683164
Apparently they can't even read clocks now.
>>
>>107681857
I have heard this elsewhere and also that people new to computers grasp tagging easier. I have tried to find programs that let you tag files on Windows to try it out, but they have all been buggy. My only experience is with photo management tools that I don't use often.
>>
>>107683328
Why would they? The clock face with pointers rotating around a spindle is a UI imposed by long since obsolete technical limitations.
>>
>>107683346
>people new to computers grasp tagging easier
I think it's actually whichever you're first exposed to first is what you're better at handling. Boomers only had filing cabinets so computer files were a natural extension of that. Zoomers have boorus that tag everything and their retarded mobile OS's try everything to hide the traditional HFS so of course they never learn it.
>>
>>107683328
Reading clocks is for faggots.
>>
>>107683410
Not reading clocks is for trannies.
