Why not get a used server and stop worrying?
>>
>>107694317
failing drives are still expensive.
i lost a 30tb exos drive this year, costs around $600 to get a refurbished one.

given the age of the remaining drives, I expect to spend ~4000$ on the upcoming two years.
>>
I'd have to wonder why the owner is discarding it.

>buying seagate
>not using RAID 5/6

Because it's from 2019?
>>
...because you're assuming that i'm worrying to begin with and that a used server will stop my supposed worries
?????

Depends, any high-VRAM GPU servers that I could use for Blender?
>>
>>107694418
I buy used Dell/HP Towers and put RTXAxxxx GPUS in them.
>>
i an using raid. raid5 is not ideal for 4+ drives because it doesn't protect against concurrent failures, which are likelier to happen as you have more drives.

raid6 is a meme. unless you're poor just use raid 10 or 50.
>>
>>107694537
Have you tried automatic backup to another machine?
>>
>>107694594
what do you mean? backup != raid.
raid makes sure your server can keep operating under drive failures, which can happen at any time.

backing up would be very expensive and very long, since ~85% of my server costs are the drives. i make manual backups for some of the stuff, but don't have a physical place to store the backups, so a fire or flood would still be a problem. if I had to upload my backups to a remote place, it would take more than two month to upload the entire server at 1Gbps upload

Nigga. You have Raid on a non-seagate drives + automatic backup to your backup server. Derp?
>>
>>107694684
Also, what are incremental backups?
>>
>>107694705
i have only seagate drives. the ones that came with the server + 2 replacement of the same capacity/speed. I already have remote backups for critical stuff that I can't afford to lose.
>>107694711
i hadn't thought about that einstein.
where do I store the backup drives? in the same house as the server so a flood destroys both?
>>
>>107694748
I keep mine at work.
Buying Seagates for anything important is retarded.
>>
i'm not going to make up shit to worry about just so i can justify a frivolous expense

there's a 99% chance you are mentally ill

i doubt you have a good answer either, but please enlighten us.

The answer is "yes".
>>
>>107694317
For my workloads I don't need 48-96 slow cores and 512GB of slow ECC RAM in a huge loud power-hungry form factor.
I need about 8-16 fast cores and 64-128GB of fast RAM in a compact quiet form factor.
