Do copyright laws need to adapt to digital media?

The ideal use of copyright is so someone who publishes something can profit from it as long as they hold the copyright and once they're no longer around or surrender their authority over it then anyone can use it without seeking permission or license.

But when it comes to software there is real value in being able to maintain software for use later with the evolution of technology, so someone or a company holding copyright over data can actually bring value long after the original publication since their ability to maintain it may rely on their ability to own it and profit from it.

Obviously this applies more than anything to video games since the code that the game runs on and the assets it rely on can be separated (people can reverse engineer the code and create a clean-room replication that behaves the same as the original game but that will never entitle them to also distribute their reengineered code with the necessary assets needed to recreate the entire game) but it can be applied across the entire spectrum of software in some fashion, due to things like being able to port stuff to different or newer platforms.

IP law needs to be abolished and copyright needs to revert back to being non-transferable 15 years no exceptions.
>>
I think you shouldn't be able to buy the rights to anything. It should follow the person into the grave, and then become public domain. Just because Disney has billions doesn't mean they get to butcher star wars. Netflix should have never been allowed to make the Witcher.

thats all I care about
>>

Actually, without IP laws, disney would have every right to butcher star wars, but they wouldn't have the exclusive right to do so.
>>

>non-transferable 15 years
Bull shit. Patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets should all be completely legally invalid concepts. 0 years. Rent seeking is bad.
>>
>>107706232
But that means the idea of placing monetary value on a concept is fallible.

but isnt george lucas still alive

I'd be happy if all they did was revert the Sonny Bono bullshit. But there's zero chance of that happening either.

With those tits?

just edit them out yourself
>>
>have rights to something
>have the ability to release it to an audience that would gladly purchase it
>do nothing but sit on the rights and send DMCA notices to anyone who tries to meet the demand because you won't
Why are so many companies like this?
>>
>>107706188
I do not accept the concept that you can own an idea; I believe it is acceptable to attribute credit to whom originated the idea. You cannot deprive someone of an idea. Your enterprise may only compete with others offering similar products or services on quantifiable and concrete terms.

They did release new versions of GTA:VC, though.

It was SHIT but it was done.
>>

just make a spiritual successor bro
>>
>>107706215
strongly agreed.

IP law's problems have been extremely obvious for a long time, especially in the US which has the most retarded patent office of all time. But there is so much money invested in the status quo that changing the status quo is politically unthinkable.
>>
I get part of IP law in a (very misguided) attempt to encourage creativity and competition insofar as that you can't just take an entire creative work and steamroll over the original creator, but it has been abused and taken the piss out of it to such a degree that it's out of luck.
Once again a law that was supposed to protect the little guy actually gets abused by the big boys.
>>
>>107706272
I think it’s 70 years since death of original holder, or 95 years since publication date (whichever is sooner). Lookin’ like the 95 years is gonna be a lot sooner for Star Wars.

Maybe this AI shit will kill copyright/IP for good because of “can’t fall behind muh Chyna!!!” and the Chinese don’t give a fuck about US copyright/IP.
>>
>>107706232
Tell us all about it when/if you ever create anything innovative of (potential) value
>>
>>107706188
They know gta cunts are some of the biggest antipiracy cunts just look at any of the vadim videos of the retarded drm bollocks they put into the releases all of which were broken easily by scene crackers and only legit buyers had to suffer with them years later

then years later they use scene cracks to rerelease games on steam lol
>>
what held the copyright system together in practice was the US hegemony and its military

now that US hegemony is over and its military can't even beat a bunch of houthis it's only a matter of time before all this bullshit is over

Lol

Worked pretty well in the George Lucas era, got some really fun fan films from that, like the Cops parody with storm troopers

>>107706188
They did, it's called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. You are living in the Digital Millennium, embrace it fully.
