Midi is a 90s audio format that works through reading instructions. Its completely dated and irrelevant in today's world. Last night I downloaded a zip on archive.org full of them. I was about to make a thread asking for a good midi player on Linux that didn't require a big ass UI for midi producers or cli only like mplayer, but then solved the problem.

To play midi on Linux simply install

vlc-plugin-fluidsynth.x86_64
fluidsynth.x86_64
fluidsynth-libs.x86_64

then just open VLC. Now you can play midi just as flawless as a Windows 95

Fuck that shit brah. Who listens to midi

depends on what sound you're trying to emulate
fluidsynth does a good job of replicating the sound of a wavetable card but the OPL3 soundfont is somewhat inauthentic since it's just playing prerecorded samples
ADLMIDI is a good tool for playing back midi files with real OPL3 emulation
personally i use a real Yamaha MU-50, for a real midi card you can use amidiplay (or midicat on openbsd, idk about the other BSDs)

none of the 4chan midwits have respect for the written word. all your threads are fruitless vanity

not even /g/, sadly

mpv can play a few midis but not most of them. And it requires a special compile flag to play midi for ffmpeg.

no one, MIDI is a protocol, unless you enjoy sending krkrkrrrccckhhHZZZKZKKHHHCCCHHHHHHHH to /dev/audio

Midi is still heavily used in music production, you need a way to control all those synths both hardware and software

this, you can set the soundfont in file->settings->plugins->input->AMIDI->settings
