Where did Microsoft go wrong /g/?People used to love Windows.
>>107718234>People used to love WindowsWhen was that exactly?
>>107718234ci/cd retardation with w10and im being generous because XP was their first malwareit ran like a tank and downgrading to 98 was a paini read stuff about people running special scripts but you could just use the fdisk from w95. or was it format that mattered? dont remember it now
It's nothing burger, just AI generated slop
>>107718234>Where did Microsoft go wrong /g/?It's a much shorter list to point at what they did right. That can be easily summerised as:
>>107718237i loved the fuck out of my w98 seand honesrly i like w8.1. bc of its gui. i liked their start menu, that i could arrange icons spatially, and adjust their sizesw10 is what made me switch to daily driving linux though. i used w10 for around one year and that disgusted me enough to just fucking nuke that install adn never look back
>>107718237Windows desktop market share:2010: 92.4%2020: 76.6%2025: 66.3%2030 = 56% on current trends. So MS is on track to go from 95%+ marketshare in the 2000s to less than 50% in the 2030s.https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/worldwide/#monthly-201012-202512
>>107718280shareholder principle and its trusty sidekick, fiduciary obligations, make sure everything turns to diarhea with kernels of undigested corn in it
>Where did Microsoft go wrong
>>107718324>investors money is microsofts moneyyoure completely, utterly, and entirely illiterate in what concerns financeyou should feel bad for it, and you should stop posting on this board as a for of penance
>>107718254It's not Arch (btw) bros making these videos; it's long-time Windows veterans. The disgust is wide and deep. The question is what happens with 12 - does Microsoft backtrack or double-down?
>>107718234People who didn't know other systems liked it. Any Mac user would tell you that Windows' user interface was massively worse.
>>107718343Microsoft has been increasing the only thing corporations care about: revenue, profits, and market cap. The changes they've made to Windows have been a success as far as management is concerned - they'd rather have 40% market share than 95% if the 40% comes with more money. Just look at Apple. A profitable walled garden is preferred over mass market loss-making.
>>107718266I've been using Windows since 3.11 and as a kid it was all I knew, so I can't make an objective judgement.I definitely didn't like 95 though, 98SE was an improvement in comparison. >>107718280Microsoft had a choke hold on the industry using all sorts of unethical practices and dominated by the 90s.With so much inertia behind Windows it's almost impossible to dethrone it. Consider the mobile market, Microsoft was too late to adapt and could not achieve the same success as Android and iOS, despite their infinite resources they could not replicate their dominance of the desktop.
>>107718237Win95 days. It was everywhere and people couldn't get enough of it. I had a relatively short-lived job demonstrating Win95 multimedia software to elementary school children at private libraries and that shit was packed everyday. Even adults would show up and be mesmerized by animated encyclopedias and video playback. Microsoft Plus screensavers and Microsoft Dangerous Creatures were crowd pleasers even though the later predated Win95 itself by a year or so.
>>107718401>Any Mac user would tell you that Windows' user interface was massively worsePre-2010 Mac users opinions were worthless; these people thought not being able to right-click was intelligent.
>>107718401mac os 9 was the biggest piece of shit os in the worldand finder crashed every 5 minutes
>>107718417Kind of wild to realize mass computer use/ownership has only been around for ~30 years. It's still so new, compared to other big changes like electricity access and car ownership. Imagine 2125 OS flame wars.
>>107718417Because it was a novelty, I was mesmerised by that stuff too. But 95 was bloated for its time, and still ran as a shell over dos, and it was trivial to blue screen it or brick it completely.
>>107718404no, not every corpo cares about thatonly the publicly traded onesbecause, like i wrote, the shareholder principle, and fiduciary obligations.shareholders are mobile with their money, they can sell shares as they pleasetheyre the owners of the company. and they dont care in the slightest about itits all about playing hot potato with shares, buying/selling based on the hype the company generatessmart money vs dumb moneypredictable profit increase and impression of stability are key aspects, because theyre fundamental in tradfin calculations when computing the value of a shareand the only value that matters is said share value.because the name of the game is not to earn through dividends, but to eat up the speculative value dumb money attributes to the shares of a company. you buy low, and then mooks buy your bags until a whale rugpulls the whole pile of shitand then everyone moves to the next company, rinse and repeateverything propped with short term considerations because, again, shareholders are mobile with their money. once the party's over they just up and leave, they dont care about either the company or its productswith msft its that they completely abandoned their os product line and focus on cloud services because it increases the profit of the company by cutting a not-so-rentable product lineobv theyre gonna lose market share, but they dont care about it. for another reason than the one you stated thoughthey dont focus on a section of consumers, theyre gradually withdrawing the whole line of products
>>107718280People who use these statistics as evidence don't know what they're talking about, you're just coping and Windows will never be replaced. Cope and seethe about it.
>>107718448That didn't stop the love.
>>107718448>95 was bloated for its time, and still ran as a shell over dosNo and no.
>>107718404>A profitable walled garden is preferred over mass market loss-makingSo when is Microsoft going to only sell Windows on their branded hardware like Mac? Their spectacular loss with the smartphone market means they can't use Apple's strategy.
>>107718406>I've been using Windows since 3.11 and as a kid it was all I knew, so I can't make an objective judgement.i used w3.1. maybe twice. dont remember much of it, because my uncle installed w3.11 shortly after i got his computer.didnt use w3.11 much more than that because you could not launch games from it. or it wasnt convenient, dont remember exactly, it was some 30 years ago instead of w3.11 i mostly used dos or norton commander (i used obsolete tech throughout my childhood. in 1995 i was using an atari. in 1997 i received a 386dx. i think i got a pentium 1 in 1999 or something like that. whenever someone bought an upgrade, i got their old gear)then w95. but i remember it being unstablethen w98, and w98seand then xp. from which i immediately downgraded because at that time i used my pc for games and ripping music cds.wxp made my games run like shit, and ripping cds was literally slower by 50%.even though i had an athlon xp 2500+ with 1 gig of ram at that timethings improved with service packs, and i started using xp only when sp2 was already releasedwhich i used for aeons, until i upgraded to w8 for a couple minutes, then w8.1
>>107718470Yes and yes, it ran like garbage on machines that ran 3.11 perfectly fine and was still heavily dependent on DOS even though it was a "single" product.I think the biggest reason was that Microsoft blatantly lied about it and people running old computers expected reasonable performance, I remember playing Solitaire on an old 486 PC that couldn't even keep the timer in the game running in real time. >>107718496XP at release was buggy as hell, I also downgraded back to 98SE for performance reasons. I also remember my dad seeing XP for the first time and asking "why does it look like that?" seeing the new theme.
>>10771854895 was not a shell on top of DOS.
>>107718434No, the system rarely crashed by itself. What actually happened was: any misbehaving program would crash the whole machine, because deep down it was still a 1980s design without memory protection or preemptive multitasking.
>>107718548>"why does it look like that?" seeing the new theme.kek, yeah>the fisher-price themei didnt have any real aesthetical preferences back then, but i still liked the w98SE theme betterim a man. i like my corners sharp, not rounded.also the blue-green composition was a miss for me. i changed it once or twice, but with cosequent formats, i just stopped noticing it
>>107718264Pushing to have Windows preinstalled on OEM manufacturer computers and being able to do everything through a GUI instead of the command line were clear rights. Linux (Arch especially LOL) struggle for these very reasons. It's no coincidence Mint / Bazzite / CachyOS / etc are the most popular Linux distributions with Windows escapees. The average user is a dumbass. Seniors can't tell you the difference between the web browser and the operating system, and the smartphone-first youth struggle with basic things like where files get saved. Any desktop OS with 50% marketshare needs to cater to these people.
>>107718587Some say the blobbier, less professional design was essential to entice millions of people who were still wary of computers.
When I installed the Windows 8 beta and saw that abomination of a Start menu. That's when I knew it would be time to switch to Loonix when support ends.
>>107718617Same. Inserting online content and ads into the offline desktop was a red line for me. They've only encroached further in Windows 11, trying to eliminate offline/local accounts and trick you into storing all your files online on OneDrive by default instead of the local harddrive. It's very similar to ChromeOS - another heaping piece of spyware shit
>>107718603makes sensenormies could find the goofy theme more friendlyclippy and the other one, the dog, probably were created with that in mind tooand old users looked past it, or changed the theme to win 98i vaguely remember something to the tune of changing the windows to w98 theme but you couldnt change the taskbar with parametersi was formatting on average once every 6 mos though, and a man can be arsed to rice his desktop only so much
>>107718617>>107718640autist talkits because of you that msft stopped trying and shat out w10hope you enjoyed the start menu then because everything else was unadulterated shityou could remove the ads no problem. first thing i did with each new install was purging the start menu and populating it with my shitshortcuts to hard drives and certain folders
>>107718617>>107718664plus you could resize the icons.it was their killer feature, its what made me hard upon seeing that glorious start menuit was clean and ethnically homogenousbut thanks to you we cant have nice things
>>107718664>>107718674>plus you could resize the icons.>it was their killer feature, its what made me hard upon seeing that glorious start menu>it was clean and ethnically homogenous>but thanks to you we cant have nice things
>>107718678>i know, ill post a wojak, that'll show emindians > autistsunironically.
>>107718234They didn't go wrong. They're worth multiple trillions. Focusing on cloud services instead of Windows has been incredibly beneficial to the company.
>>107718664Windows remains trash to this day for various reasons. For all its faults, Linux has beat Microsoft on software updates for decades. Manual updates per program and the constant associated restarts still plague Windows users. It's literally impossible to have an uptime over 30 days in Windows 10 because MS canceled the ability to push back updates
>>107718684>indians > autists>unironically.
>>107718687>investors money is microsofts moneynuh uh, lolle
>>107718691>It's literally impossible to have an uptime over 30 days in Windows 10 because MS canceled the ability to push back updateswouldnt be a problem for me. at that time i used wintrash for vidya only.but wintrash forced updates bricked my fukken gaymesand w11's even bricked systems.pops bought a w11 laptop, brought it home, had it working for one eveningthen hes got an update.next day: computer boots to a black screen with a cursor.immediate fucking return, the day after hes asking me to install linux on his old machine
>>107718700Repeating the same line doesn't make it any more correct. You just reveal yourself as a dipshit. Corporate executives like those at Microsoft are in the top 0.1%.
