>>107736931there's a few reasons why they were useful, namely that they prevent burn in on crts, back when computers couldn't turn the monitor off on it's own, and even when they started to be able to, it was common to use a screensaver first, and later switch off the monitor, as both frequent power cycling is bad for the monitor, and you'd have to wait for it to warm back up. these days with led backlit lcd's there's almost no advantage to them, while turning back on a modern screen isn't instant, it's fast enough
