I'm trying to install Ubuntu 24.04 on VMware with a Windows 10 host and it only goes from the purple basic Ubuntu title screen to this black screen with the square cursor forever. I confirmed the hash so the iso can't be corrupted. Tried with and without easy install, and disabling accelerated 3d graphics, didn't work.

It will start to taper before Q2 2027 most likely. Vendor pricing volatility will indicate how close we are to this tapering point. Tapering point is when restock times become more apparent and retail is able to restock. As they restock pricing will decrease slowly. This tapering tail is going to be very long though and the start point depend a lot on the actions of the AI barons.

Dave Egglestone, 40 year dram veteran echoed this. DRAM foundries have been going up this year and one is coming up next year. 80 % of /g/ are smoothbrained doomers who only reads headlines.

Before the smoothbrains say it, the big RAM manufacturers can't hold on to inventory forever, because there exist smaller ones like Nanya which is producing DDR5.

The real unknown are the AI companies. I don't know how long they can hold out, but creditors certainly won't wait. Once AI service gets extremely commercialized, they are stuck between what is essentially renting out printers to people who already have one making the market competitive immediately super competitive. Negative sentiment is already settling with copilot, so I think it's safe to assume that the hype will die down over 2026 and more realistic expectations will settle. I would not be surprised if 2028 is when we start seeing normalcy. GPU's might not fare so well due to it being harder tech, but there might be a much grander uncuckening on the horizon if gam3rs stops buying their shit from the gatekeepers. IE, like the Sapphire CEO said and every sensible person always said, wait. There has never been a better time to wait.

Thinking of getting a macbook (pro) having never used one before, so i have a question. I know that on ios, after a few years the old models would stop getting any software updates and many apps require the latest ios version in order to run. So you basically get locked out of using many apps and are forced to buy a new phone.
Does this kind of shit happen on the mac?
>>
>>107751130
on android, is it possible to log into a youtube account without logging into google on the entire phone?
>>
>>107752988
"few years" is usually "at least 7". once macos stops getting official updates, there are projects to make newer os' work on older macs.
>>
>>107753090
So thats a yes then? What kind of app would stop working on old macos?
>>
>>107753159
This is a hard question to answer honestly. Right now m1 is still supported, so any mac old enough to be unsupported is still intel. For old intel macs there is opencore to run the latest macos, but those computers might be running into issues more related to the arm migration. My laptop is a 2021 model, and I don't plan to upgrade for a while. If Apple kills support with macos 27 I'll just patch to make it work or at worst run asahi.

1. When I click a reply, it always moves the browser window to the quoted post, but juuuust low enough that the replies to that post are hidden by the top of the browser window. Can I change this?

2. Webms, once opened, cannot be closed by clicking on them again, unlike in Brave.

the right solution is something like git or using shared storage so you're always editing the same single set of files. you can try syncthing.

Just curious, is there a way to keep my public IPv4 from changing WITHOUT having to ask my ISP?

I'm running Wireguard LXC on Proxmox and it works fine until I had to power cycle everything including the router. The ISP issued me a new IPv4 so that meant I had to go into every Wireguard peer and change the server IP. Then I realized this means the VPN is unusable if the server gets a new public IP, and there's no way to fix this if I'm away from home.
>>
>>107754507
no, the easiest solution is running something like the linuxservers.io duckdns docker container to update a ddns entry automatically every time your ip changes.
>>
>>107754507
a dynamic dns daemon, you don't need docker for that, it doesn't even have to be on the same machine, just someone on the same IP. such as a old smartphone running termux.
>>
>>107754507
Use dynamic dns (DDNS) using no-ip.com. Your home router probably can be configured as a ddns client. This means of course that your wireguard peers must use your no-ip.com URL instead of IP addresses, so you'd need to see if that's possible (I would guess so).

The telemetry in Win 10 can be reasonably neutered if you know what you're doing. Win 11 is built from the ground up to be spyware.
Not that Win 10 isn't, but corporate audacity was different a decade ago, and people have had a decade to tinker with it.

Also 11 is just straight up worse if your idea of a usable OS is for it to get in your way as little as possible. If you're some pajeet who fucking loves integrated "features" you can't get rid of, or a first year college student who lived until 18 using only, a phone and it's your first week using a computer, then 11 might be for you. Otherwise, stick with 10.
10 is far from perfect, but it is to 11 what 7 was to 10, if you catch my drift.

PC building is dead in the water and laptop prices are increasing as well.
Companies have to buy laptops so manufacturers will prioritise those to the detriment of PC components and prebuilds.
The used market will heat up, people will sell used computers for more than they paid 3-4 years ago, just like cars during Covid.

It's looking grim.

I'm on a Linux laptop and last year I had to migrate all my shit from an HDD to an SSD because it was starting to show an increasing Reallocated Sector Count. Now it's just there, connected to the second bay but unmounted and doing nothing.
Today I realized that it was still emitting SMART alerts to the journal when I used "journalctl" for unrelated reasons. The alerts indicated the Reallocated count stayed almost the same, but there's now a non-zero (it was zero when I migrated the data) Uncorrectable Sector Count and Pending Sector Count (~3500 and ~50 respectively).
My questions are:
>is there a way I could map out the "safe" areas and reuse the drive for secondary non-critical storage (anime and shit) or is this drive not worth / safe for reusing anymore?
> I thought the drive would be completely powered off when unmounted but "hdparm -C" says it's "active/idle" instead of "sleeping", why is that?
>>
>>107757765
I'm not sure it's unsafe to use for anything you don't care about but I don't think it's worth more than a paperweight. The SMART data indicates it's actively dying instead of just being worn out. If you want to use it, just find a way to silence the SMART alerts

What is the practical use of link shorteners? All I ever see them used for is for viruses and other "hehe made you click" garbage.
>but muh [braindead boomer academia] doesn't want to see long link
Then just use a legitimate link shortener, which doesn't just open the original link, but instead it opens the shortener's web page, which then gives you the unshortened URL (raw) and a thumbnail preview. Browsers like Firefox should auto-filter them or warn them, like when you're clicking on an insecure website.
>>
>>107758748
I would go with a framework desktop instead, maybe even just buying the motherboard and slapping it into a mini ITX case so you can actually use the PCIE slot.
Better cooling and better warranty.

Current version of MacOS supports machines going back to 2019. Though those older machines are the Intel models, which Apple is probably trying to get people to migrate to Apple Silicon. My M1 Air from 2020 is still going strong, and reportedly will be supported through the end of the decade. And even then, there'll probably be projects like OpenCore Legacy Patcher that'll allow OS installation to unsupported machines.

And even if a hardware model is no longer supported, Apple has been known to send out security updates for older OS versions ... my iPhone 4S once got such an update long after the model had been declared "obsolete."

Also consider, if application devs see a significant user base, they're not going to lock out people who are still on older versions of the OS

Obviously, if you copy and paste files in say Windows, you can tell it to skip files that are already there, but in this case I want it actually comparing file content, not just names, and I want any files NOT on the NAS but that are on the drive to be deleted, since that would mean I deleted them from the NAS since the last backup intentionally

Set up a secondary account to install google play in. If you're paranoid, also set up another secondary account for your google-less daily usage: the main account has to be logged in and decrypted on boot, but all other accounts are re-sealed when logged out, so not using the main account as your daily means you can always quickly quit your session without rebooting the phone. You can then set up a decoy setup on the main account that looks like a completely bland and uninteresting phone.

Does it have to be wheels?

This sort of shit was a big problem in the vanlife community, always parking on hills and also having little space to manoeuvre in the limited space. For a while people used a pulley system, just mount the frame to the roof/wall and a couple spirit levels. To keep it from swinging, when there was a bit of wind or whatever, they would use jacks or blocks to stabilise it.

There's a good chance there's no consumer product widely available that does what you want. It also doesn't sound like something that would be particularly beneficial for any specific demographic so there's not going to be any boutique or high end or niche manufacturers for it either. Your options are to either try and see if some of the immense variety of chinkshit out there happens to have the wheels you want by pure chance and then take a plunge and hope the chinkshit doesn't fall apart instantly, or DIY it somehow. Either by mashing together some kind of adjustable wheels yourself (if you trust yourself to craft solid enough supports that your entire bed will rest on), or by carefully measuring and cutting some rail-like supports that will level the floor under the bed so you can use any non-adjustable wheeled one.
Or like the other anon said relax your requirements. If the bed is on feet and raised from the floor you shouldn't need to move it to clean under it.

I decided to use my PSU to do something else, so removed current, I opened the PC and started yanking out the 24-pin cable to pull it out, but then changed my mind, and closed it back up. I also gave the case a few slaps since the case fans seemed to be grazing some little cable making an annoying noise.
Now:
>when I start the PC fans will spin, but PC does not start, no video or usb output

I tried disconnecting all the PSU cables, clearing CMOS, reconnecting RAM, doing the PSU paperclip trick (it makes the fans spin). What do /g/ros?

It's actually so much easier to get a thorough cleaning by just moving it, and it means if anything gets dropped or falls behind it it's easy to retrieve.

>>107765306
Honestly wheels are wanted but if there's something with feet that are attached (not furniture movers) and disperse weight well enough to make it easy to slide around, I can do without wheels. Wheels just seem ideal.
I just need maybe like 1" of adjustability, the flooring is quite unlevel in the corner where a leg has to go and this really angles the bed. Doesn't visibly look it but you feel it when laying in it.

What do you think is the best way to organise music folder names? Is there some industry standard?

I do

Artist - Year - Album Title [Catalogue Tag]
eg
Daft Punk - 2001 - Discovery [WPCR-80083]

I dont bother tagging its bitrate or flac because that info doesnt really help. What do you think?

As far as I know gamescope is something you can launch if you want, steam doesn't use it out of the box. SteamOS is set up to run steam on gamescope but you don't otherwise get it preinstalled on any other distribution.
>does that mean the protocol behind the host (x11 or Wayland) doesn't matter?
To a degree. It doesn't matter for the game if you're running it in gamescope; but it does matter for gamescope. There are possible bugs or incompatibilities or quirks depending on what your host system uses and how it's set up.
>And how does a compositor work related to the display server?
As far as I understand it, gamescope basically implements its own self-contained wayland server, and to the host it just looks like any other application with a window that renders stuff in that window. Gamescope just happens to be running a server letting other programs run as wayland and rendering them inside its window.
This is probably a gross oversimplification because running an entire display server is no trivial task but that's my high level understanding.
>>
>>107768438
You should be able to install an update yeah. What major windows version are you on? If you're on 10 or 11, colour me surprised that games are checking patch level or whatever now. Either way, use windows's built in updater.
If you're on 10 and windows says you're up to date, it's possible it might be requiring 11.
You could also try running it through Proton (on a linux VM), it allegedly works well.

Sometimes. It's not "normal" in the sense that it's weird, but I've seen it happen tons of times. I don't really know why and also I've never bothered investigating myself so I don't know how to fix it, it's not really a problem either as long as you don't specifically click eject.

sometimes it's a bios option to designate sata ports as being removable. typically used if you have a sata hotswap bay.
if you don't intend to use them like removable drives, it's a good idea to turn that off in your bios, or at least go into the drive properties in windows and enable write caching, which is turned off by default for removable-type drives in windows. leaving write-caching off can reduce performance.

To be honest idk shit how Windows handles that stuff. On Linux every filesystem looks "detachable" when the automounter gets to handle it. You know, when the stuff isn't mounted at boot but when you click it, it gets under (/run)/media/your_user/blah.

i've been a linux user for a long time as well, though i also don't know where exactly the "removable" flag is. certain things like usb-attached storage can be assumed to be removable since usb is itself removable, but i am aware that things like ATA (IDE) drives can also report themselves as being removable or fixed, i'm not that familiar with that mechanism. there's a /sys file for each of your drives which flags the drive as removable or not, that comes from somewhere, and while i don't know all of it, i know for a fact that at least in some cases, that comes from the drive itself

You can't help someone that doesn't want to help themselves. Even if it's your parents.
What you can do is give them the information - clearly explain to them that "the movies are there, just on a different channel". If they show any interest you can explain to them how to find the exact channel(s) - make sure they understand that they don't need to search all of the channels; if they're actually interested in solving their own problems then you can work with them to figure out the schedules and help them adjust their routine, and find a new routine, that will let them watch movies without having to learn all of the new channels themselves. If the want to do that you can help them.
But if they start being dismissive, if they complain that it's too hard before even showing interest in a solution, etc., then there's nothing you can do. They don't want to change. The best you can do is communicate as clearly as you can that a solution exists, and that you're willing to help them as much as possible to figure it out, but if they basically say they don't even want a solution at all then there's nothing to be done.

This is a skill you should be able to apply in many areas of life, not just in this specific scenario. Also something to introspect yourself, to make sure you're able to accept help when it's handed to you, rather than biting the hand that feeds you a solution out of frustration. (Not saying you're doing this, just pointing out that this applied pretty universally.)

My ISP is refusing to honour my contract speed, first they want me to use their own shitty router (which is capped to 1gbps despite the contract being for 2gbps), then they want me to use the router's own speedtest to check for the line speed, which reports even 3.6gbps download and 900mbps upload despite their own activity monitor showing ~250 down and ~100 up, and speedtest from any device at home being 800 down and 60 up
I've been on a call with them for over one hour now, 50 minutes of which being left on hold
What can I even do at this point? I'm expecting them to tell me "the router's speedtest shows everything being normal, so that must be an issue on your end thank you and bye"

UK, no FCC here
Just got back from a call with another operator and they have to send someone to investigate as on their end everything looks ok, of course it does
>>
>>107771238
Where do you live? Around here there's regulations around this and they have some wiggle room in their agreements to give up to like 80% of advertised speed or slow down at peak times or some shit (which is itself kind of bullshit but whatever) and if they deliver below these wiggle room margins, for more than just occasional reasonable maintenance downtime or whatever, you can get a refund and shit. And you can take them to small claims court if needed.
You might need to escalate if the first line support is unresponsive. Like you said their own activity monitor shows slow speeds. You can also try speedtest.net, which is used so commonly that it should qualify as reasonable evidence of the speeds for any normal person.
You pay for a line connection not for a router btw, the support scripts might not like it but they're legally obligated to give you the paid-for internet speeds even if you don't use their router.

Threaten to cancel your contract and sue for a refund. ISPs are often just like phone operators, they overcharge immensely for the bandwidth so they can often bend over backwards if you sound like you're cancelling your contract. Of course it's no guarantee but it might help you escalate up the technical support ladder.
And if they refuse to fix it then do cancel your contract.

>>107771354

Do you mean the ethernet ports from the built-in switch? You should be able to multiplex them I think, I've never had to do it but I'm like 99% the technology exists. You connect two cables to each 1G port and get 2G speeds.

After about a year of use, my laptop fan starter rattling and also cooling went to shit, it was constantly throttling. So I opened it up and removed a shitton of dust caked into the fan exhaust, plus tried to kinda clean the fan a bit with my vacuum and by blowing on it (holding the blades down), I didn't see any obvious obstruction that would get in the way and it was rotating smoothly as I tried spinning it by hand.
Closed my laptop back up and cooling is completely fixed, no more throttling even under heavy loads, but the rattling still persists and is basically unchanged either for the worse or for the better. Is there anything I can do, or should I look into replacing the fan outright?

Hitting my laptop or sometimes shaking or moving it around a bit sometimes stops the rattling, but it always comes back. (Before you ask, it's not something I normally do, and can't have caused the rattling in the first place. I'm just bloody annoyed now, and whatever it is that's mechanically the fucked percussive maintenance does help temporarily.)

The only thing that goes in a lock is graphite. Buy it at the hardware store. If you're turbo poor / bubba, just rub a pencil on the key until it's black and fuck it around in the lock a few times. Repeat until the mechanism moves freely.

>>
>>107774356
You describe the problem, he tries it a few times and then trusts your word.
Next time it happens, record a video of it. Ideally, hold the door open with a shoe underneath and test the lock as many times as needed until it shows the problem on camera.
I doubt they'd be willing to spend the time on troubleshooting and fixing the existing lock, replacing it is easier and faster.

Keep in mind that most locksmiths are clinically retarded and may bring you a replacement lock that is too big, too small, or has the keyhole in a slightly different place. Test it thoroughly yourself before accepting their claim that the job is done.

I don't know if this applies to /g/ because its an audio thing, but it IS a new piece of technology nonetheless.

>spend an hour trying to figure it all out to no avail
>get back from work today, I "don't care" about it but its bothering the shit out of me, start tinkering
>get the volume higher (inner audio in sound settings was at 62 instead of 100) but can't fix anything else
>obs filters are a joke, barely do anything
>record a video off obs of me testing the mic, then clip the same segment with my amd software
>obs sounds awful no matter what I do, no matter the mic filters or settings I add
>amd clip sounds great with no tinkering whatsoever

how does this happen? what can I do to fix the obs sound to be more like it is with my regular amd adrenaline clips / zoom / discord sound? obs is the only outlier, every other app or game with in-game voice I've tested is fine. I want to not care about it but now I've put so much time into it I kind of just want to figure it out to say I did it, but also just because I have leaving shit like this unfinished. After a seemingly innocuous reboot, my system just bootloops or freezes either when udev starts up, or when I've punched in my drive passphrase and gotten roughly to mounting filesystems. Certainly quite short of any interactive session. Happens with any random live USB as well, so it's not an issue with my drives or my OS as such. Swapped in a backup power supply, no change. Swapped in a backup graphics card, no change. Pulled all drives and peripherals besides k/v/m, no change. overnight mt86+ passed, by the way; not a memory issue either. And, well, it didn't bootloop or lock up all night either, so that's something.
At one point during an otherwise routine boot freeze, managed to see the amdgpu module complain that the iGPU was behaving strangely. Turned off the iGPU in BIOS, no change. Turned off my XMP profile, turned off the humble little undervolt I had going on and returned voltage control to fully automatic, no change from either.
Considering the one diagnostic I actually managed to get it spit out pertained to something that lives in the same package as my CPU, I have to assume the CPU is the issue, right? It's weird, though. I've *seen* CPUs develop like, a wonky core or something. Linux tends to just trudge along while littering syslog with complaints.
fwiw, identites of the remaining components that could possibly be at fault: MSI B550-A Pro, AMD 5700G.
Where ought I go from here? Is it likelier that my CPU itself is failing and needs replacing, or that something like power delivery on the mobo is faltering? Testing either one requires a purchase on my part, so I'd appreciate help increasing my chances that the first one I make is the correct and last one I make.

Arch is rolling release, Debian is point release.
>>107777802
The packages are different too. Arch doesn't have separate *-dev packages while Debian does (Arch is more bloated in this regard). Arch dev team packages everything as-is while Debian sometimes chops up things. On Arch when you install something, something gets installed and that's that while on Debian services may get enabled automatically for example. Or you get prompted by configuration dialog or whatever.
But in the end both are binary distributions as the vast majority of Linux distributions.

i want to serve a page from a rpi, but i dont want the pi to have to be on the user's home lan. i want the user to have to connect to the pi which acts as a router (so they'd see "pi network" in their wifi") and then type in the default gateway in their browser and get to my page.
of course, they would lose internet access while doing this, which is not ideal.
how can i let them keep internet access while also being on a little network between only them and the pi?
>>
Why are you trying to do this? Why can't it be on their LAN?
>>
>>107778634
because it's for a thing that has no screen and i dont want to have the user stick an sd card in there with a new wpa_supplicant.conf or something every time the wifi password changes.
i dont want to have to assign the pi a static ip either. it would be way cooler if the user just connected to the thing via a wifi network that it emits, and then changes its settings from their browser. but i want them to still have internet access while they do this.
>>
>>107778735
That's easy enough, just have it plug in to ethernet instead of using WiFi, and have a cron job that updates a DNS record with the local IP. I think you can specify the IP when using the API of some dynamic DNS services, so the Pi doesn't need creds to directly modify your own DNS records. Just CNAME a subdomain to the DDNS record and there you go. No need to deal with network config, and the user has an easy way to access it on their local network.

He wants it to be a router and AP for a network that is disconnected from the user's usual network and the internet, but the user can access in parallel.
That's totally doable, but probably not the best solution to solve the problems of network config and an easy way to hit the Pi, hence why I suggested >>107778771
>>
>>107779041
>but the user can access in parallel.
Then the user needs two network adapters, one for normal net and one for the Pi. Although many people have that: wired and wireless. But now idk which one he wants to use for which purpose.
Damn, people are super vague with networking questions.

Try cloning the WAN MAC address of your router on the PC.
The ISP might be enforcing a specific MAC.
If that doesn't work, then the issue is with the way your computer is configured, maybe you have a static IP set on the PC or something.

>>107775759
The main issue is not with software, but physical – how you positioned the microphone, how that fits into its polar pattern, and the properties of your room.
Put closed-back headphones on (on high volume), dial the microphone volume down to 50%, and monitor yourself speaking in real time. Bring the microphone as close to your mouth as needed for it to sound loud and clear, rotate and tilt it as needed. Once it sounds good, start making noises (mouse clicks, key presses), if those are still loud then you need the microphone volume even lower and bring it even closer to your mouth (but don't take it in your mouth).
When you're happy with the ratio of voice-to-noise-to-distance then you've found the optimal placement.
At this stage you can play with software enhancements if you still feel that they are needed.

The Pi needs to get its internet from a different interface (Ethernet, second WiFi, etc.) than the one you share with clients with hostapd.
>>
>>107779545
No, that's the whole point of HDMI. The GPU or it's drivers are the problem here, not HDMI.

On a Raspberry Pi this is in fact configurable, along with many other HDMI parameters, but on PCs you're stuck with whatever the card BIOS is programmed to do.

I think the only way to control it in-game (outside of AMD drivers or afterburner) is via this frame rate option, or possibly vsync. I'm assuming variable means uncapped, I'm wondering how dynamic resolution responds to this setting.
>>
>>107782034
i'm not very familiar with modern graphics options, but "frame rate" set to "variable" doesn't really make sense to me. like i know what VFR means on paper, but as far as i've seen vfr is something you enable by just turning on vsync and letting the graphics drivers/monitor handle the rest. i'm not sure why a game would need separate options for vfr and vsync

Maybe there's a smart way to set that up, but we just download whatever media we want to watch directly on our PCs, then copy it to the media server so we can watch it on the TV. The media server is only hooked up to a 256GB SSD, so we have to manage what shows we actually have on it due to the limited space.
>>
>>107784323
Try /hsg/, typically the server would do everything, download (via torrents), host and play files, appreciate this isn't always possible with a 256GB SSD. If you really don't want cables I would transfer the files way before I need them, such as placing an entire season on at once and keeping it there, stream these instead from a site, or get an external hard drive and plug this into either the laptop or your router (if it has USB). I think a dongle is not the way to go for this.

This is exactly what we do. We find an anime or movie we want to watch, download it, copy it to the SSD (which is external, the onboard storage is only like 128 GB), and watch it at our leisure as the laptop streams it to whichever TV we're watching stuff on. Over the onboard wifi, though, which is only wifi 4, copying a season of anime could take a couple of hours, if I remember correctly. We do want to be able to watch something in the evening that we started copying in the afternoon, so that's just too slow.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the whole point is to be low-cost. The laptop was like $80, the SSD and external enclosure were things I already owned, and so on. Ordering a $13 wifi 6 adapter off of aliexpress to not have to worry about an ethernet cable is really nice, especially if I want to rearrange the room layout at any point. In the future, I might get an external HDD or larger SSD, and then it might be worth setting up the laptop to download series directly. For now, though, this fulfills our use case.

How hard is it to use? Things from GitHub don't work for me most of the time. If it doesn't have gui I am too retarded. Took me days to find download button on GitHub

assuming the player doesn't do anything, the file is the same, so they should appear the same. the only case where it might be different is if you end up transcoding.

how long can I stay unemployed before I start giving HR women the double ICK? (they will get the ICK from looking at me always, double from seeing me being unemployed for X months)
I have 60k USD saved up and I don't feel like investing it into anything because there is no future (I already have my own place but the mortgage is just 400 USD because I had a tiny loan)
