What does /g/ recommend? My ISPs router almost doesnt have options, it doesnt even let me change the DNS. The only "advanced" thing I can do on it is open ports so I'm looking for one more open at the time of configuring it.

I want to like Mikrotik, I really do. Their hardware is neat, cheap and with good features. But FUCK ME do I get AIDS everytime I have to use their UI or follow a guide by them. It's like using GIMP, you really have to be autistic to think this is fine. I never had this problem with pfsense, opnsense, opnwrt, or any other router firmware for that matter. They seem to have established themselves among autists so they're extremely unlikely to overhaul their entire UX at this point. It's a shame, really.
with wifi? some cheap wifi 6/6e box with openwrt support, the xiaomi ax1500 is generally around $25without wifi? literally any computer with at least two network devices for wan and lani run a wax202 with 512 MB of ram and its plenty to run the network for my whole house with ad blocking and an extensive firewall ip block listjust keep in mind>opnsense does not do wifi>opnsense only supports x86>x86 has terrible performance/watt for routing>openwrt is not meant for anything but the target embedded devices>wifi 7 is not yet available on openwrt
>>107758619mikrotik is just a worse version of ubiquiti with their niche being a retro larping aesthetic instead of sleek and modern
>>107758809I don't have a problem with the aesthetic. I have a problem with the actual usability. It's ridiculously unintuitive compared to just about anything else that's out there, and they clearly see no problem with that, as evidenced by their documentation that is just as difficult to follow.
>>107758866well thats their niche, if you dont care for it why are you even considering?their crap isnt even cheap comparatively, its prosumer junk sold at prosumer pricesconsumer companies like gl.inet beat them in price to performance and competing prosumer companies like ubiquiti beat them in everything elseyoure really just paying for the crappy aesthetic and the crappy routeros
>>107752585Mikrotik L009UiGS-2HaxD-INhttps://mikrotik.com/product/l009uigs_2haxd_in
honest answer OP just look at whatever has the most recent version of WIFI on it and a fully accessible firmware/config. ASUS used to be good for this last time I bought a wifi router but that was like four years ago now. also it should have wired ports, obviously.
>>107759013I'm not "considering" Mikrotik, just venting my frustration over my experience with their stuff. Setting up Wireguard on it recently was like getting a root canal. I already explained what I like about them (them being Latvian is cool too, c'mon). Their stuff was not expensive back when I bought mine, but that may have changed since.
>>107758619I recently got a hAP ax s, and the experience I got was quite the opposite. The winbox and cli are pretty fast to use and the routerOS documentation and videos are pretty user friendly. But I don't have that much experience with other manufacturers, so maybe I don't have a good point of reference.
>>107759202lol, lmaojust stop caring lad, its better for your sanity
>>107759223the main problem is that instead of just being normal linux or posix they insist on using their own proprietary garbage like shitscolearning linux networking like nftables works on all flavours of linux, meanwhile the mikrotik solution has no such portability
>>107759239What do you mean "stop caring"? Stop doing things on that router? Stop hating the UX when I think it's ass? Stop complaining about it?

>>107759962Not really unless you're planning on upgrading your fiber speed in the future or want additional lan routing or wireless features
>>107760074>additional lan routingWhat do you mean.> wireless featuresIsn't this what AP already do?
>>107752585set any router behind the ISP router and configure it however you want
idk I love my mikrotik stuff. sure, setting it up wasn't the most intuitive process, but I haven't had any problems at all since. or maybe that's just a result of not buying cheap chinese shit

>>107758619The trick is to skip the GUIThey literally say the GUI is a mirror of the CLI that's why it's so ass backwards sometimes.
>>107760503That makes it only slightly less painful.
>>107759962This is a standalone GPON ONT and you also have a separate router, right? Are you absolutely sure the ONT's ethernet port is only 100mbit? That would be really weird for a GPON ONT (the G stands for gigabit after all). It looks like the HG1, which does have a gigabit port.In any case you usually aren't allowed to replace the ONT, and it's enforced by checking serial numbers. If the ONT is gigabit and the limiting factor is your router then upgrading it might help slightly depending on the exact limits your ISP has set for your GPON connection. e.g. for an advertised speed of 100mbit, some ISPs might set the actual limit to about 114 to ensure you actually see 100 on speedtest sites after accounting for overhead. It probably wouldn't be enough of a boost to be worthwhile. If you upgrade to a faster package you'll probably get a better router (and ONT if needed) for "free".
