Looking for some advice, anons. I have some time on my hands so I thought I might learn web development. I quite like programming and I would like doing it as a job. What should I learn aside from the basics? I know JS and some Go but I mainly used them to write little tools for myself. I know that the market is in bad shape and if I go in hoping for a high salary or being hired at all with just a React crud app under my belt I will probably be laughed at so I want to know what can I do to maybe, some time in the future, be hired.Things may be bad right now but I assure you that being in the rat race for a tech job is leagues easier than doing a normal job in the position I'm currently in.
>>107760417Maybe learn a frontend well (e.g., React, Vue) and some backend fundamentals, and build a few projects that people can actually use.
>>107760417The market isn't just bad, it's catastrophic.
I am still seething that I got asked a competitive programming level question on an amazon OA for a 3yoe positionAsking claude / chatgpt they both say that this problem is more in line with Codeforce 1/2 divisions or USACO gold / platinumJust to give you an idea of what the problem entails, the solution involves:>recursion>recursive dynamic programming>memoization>interval dynamic programming>prefix sums over an interval (optional, but the solution would almost certainly TLE without this)If I could understand the problem, figure out a solution, and implement it all within 45 minutes I would be asking 500k/yr not $150k
>>107761740Some jeet gave you that problem to filter you while also letting cheating pajeets to pass it.Find his boss' name and report him, or the boss's boss name in case they are both jeets.
I couldn't be fucked going back to work tomorrow. I know I'm getting laid off in about a year anyway with the amount of jeet contractors they've been bringing on in the last 6 months.

>>107762038I'm going to be honest that is a terrible ideaI'm a junior / mid level dev with zero experience working in faang, it's completely probable that these questions are randomly selected from a pool of potential problems when I start the test. They send dozens if not hundreds of OAs like this out every week. The recruiter that sent me it sounds chinese, not indian. And regardless stalking linkedIn to find out the organizational structure for amazon's HR team just to report whoever made the OA (which I have no idea how I would even find out) sounds like a great way to get blacklisted from the company forever.I'm seething and expecting a rejection letter on monday, but the best thing I could logically do is move on and apply to other jobs.

>>107760318Anybody here self-employed or have their own tech business?I’ve been running my side business doing bigger freelance work with contractors I hire, but it seems like those outsourced workers are just using AI nowadays. I’d like to replace them with AI myself but it’s hard to switch mental contexts for each project. Claude occasionally gets out of hand and changes quality standards hourly, no idea on how to rein it in with tests or Jira tickets. Ideally i would love it if my business could just make subscription revenue to get away from the hourly slog.

do you think much about the value of your time? ever since christmas I've been thinking about how much time it takes to cook food. cooking food is work and i'd rather use that time doing other stuff. it's probably a net negative to cook food compared to getting food delivered.
>>107767190If the food you got delivered was the same quality as what you can make it home, they could be compared like that. But if you always get food delivered you will definitely get fat and develop health issues because of the shortcuts that uncaring at-scale food makers are incentivized to take. You don't unlock "staying healthy without needing to spend time cooking" until you have private chef money.

Four years.Zero raises.Seven years on the IT help desk.I’m 35, and recently I was in a car crash. In those moments afterward—when everything slowed down and your mind clings to what it knows—I realized what I was actually thinking about. Not the car.Not the money.I was thinking about my CompTIA IT fundamentals, the tickets waiting for me, and whether I was still making my boss happy. As strange as that sounds, it hit me hard. This job has shaped how I think under pressure. It trained my brain to stay calm, troubleshoot, and keep going even when everything feels broken. That mindset showed up when I didn’t expect it—when it mattered.I’m also grateful for my coworkers, who somehow always find more tasks for me. Truly. Those piled-on responsibilities forced me to grow, to learn, and to carry more than I thought I could. God bless them. The crash didn’t just rattle my car—it reset my perspective. I’m thankful to be here, thankful for the people I work with, and thankful for the skills that stuck with me even in a moment of shock.Sometimes it takes a hard stop to see what’s really been building you all along.

Jobs were up during start of AIhype.
Day whatever of having a job.A coworker I have who has been there a lot longer than me and yet is younger than me described it as a "good place to retire". I'm pretty sure I only got hired because I'm ex-mil, as pretty much the whole team at that site are ex-mil. Am I already dead?

There's no /utwg/ so asking here: Can I put "Caregiver / Elder Care" on my linkedin even though it's not a real job I had? My last real work experience is from 2024 but I did spend more than a part-time job's worth of time taking care of my grandma last year (it was split between me and my siblings). Obviously there was no company involved but it looks bad to have no experience for all of 2025 except 2 shitty projects I did for my own enjoyment.Sure I can bring it up in interviews but I need to get to that point first.

I also see that you can add a career break to linkedin, but all I can imagine is a recruiter seeing that on a young, entry level profile and having a laugh.
