Looking for some advice, anons. I have some time on my hands so I thought I might learn web development. I quite like programming and I would like doing it as a job. What should I learn aside from the basics? I know JS and some Go but I mainly used them to write little tools for myself.

I know that the market is in bad shape and if I go in hoping for a high salary or being hired at all with just a React crud app under my belt I will probably be laughed at so I want to know what can I do to maybe, some time in the future, be hired.

Things may be bad right now but I assure you that being in the rat race for a tech job is leagues easier than doing a normal job in the position I'm currently in.
>>
>>107760417
Maybe learn a frontend well (e.g., React, Vue) and some backend fundamentals, and build a few projects that people can actually use.
>>
>>107760417
The market isn't just bad, it's catastrophic.

I am still seething that I got asked a competitive programming level question on an amazon OA for a 3yoe position
Asking claude / chatgpt they both say that this problem is more in line with Codeforce 1/2 divisions or USACO gold / platinum

Just to give you an idea of what the problem entails, the solution involves:
>recursion
>recursive dynamic programming
>memoization
>interval dynamic programming
>prefix sums over an interval (optional, but the solution would almost certainly TLE without this)
If I could understand the problem, figure out a solution, and implement it all within 45 minutes I would be asking 500k/yr not $150k
>>
>>107761740
Some jeet gave you that problem to filter you while also letting cheating pajeets to pass it.
Find his boss' name and report him, or the boss's boss name in case they are both jeets.

I couldn't be fucked going back to work tomorrow. I know I'm getting laid off in about a year anyway with the amount of jeet contractors they've been bringing on in the last 6 months.

I'm going to be honest that is a terrible idea
I'm a junior / mid level dev with zero experience working in faang, it's completely probable that these questions are randomly selected from a pool of potential problems when I start the test. They send dozens if not hundreds of OAs like this out every week. The recruiter that sent me it sounds chinese, not indian.
And regardless stalking linkedIn to find out the organizational structure for amazon's HR team just to report whoever made the OA (which I have no idea how I would even find out) sounds like a great way to get blacklisted from the company forever.
I'm seething and expecting a rejection letter on monday, but the best thing I could logically do is move on and apply to other jobs.

Anybody here self-employed or have their own tech business?

I’ve been running my side business doing bigger freelance work with contractors I hire, but it seems like those outsourced workers are just using AI nowadays. I’d like to replace them with AI myself but it’s hard to switch mental contexts for each project. Claude occasionally gets out of hand and changes quality standards hourly, no idea on how to rein it in with tests or Jira tickets. Ideally i would love it if my business could just make subscription revenue to get away from the hourly slog.

do you think much about the value of your time?
ever since christmas I've been thinking about how much time it takes to cook food. cooking food is work and i'd rather use that time doing other stuff. it's probably a net negative to cook food compared to getting food delivered.
>>
>>107767190
If the food you got delivered was the same quality as what you can make it home, they could be compared like that. But if you always get food delivered you will definitely get fat and develop health issues because of the shortcuts that uncaring at-scale food makers are incentivized to take. You don't unlock "staying healthy without needing to spend time cooking" until you have private chef money.

Tech sector is still very lucrative but the 'low-hanging fruit' careers were picked clean decades ago. If you can find decent paying work in IT, use that money to get out of debt and to live within your means. The goal should be: land, wife, and kids. Lead a more rural life on a cityfag's income and you'll be pocketing huge difference, and you can use that to give your kids the leg up in life you never got.

Sadly, most of us will at most only be able to live that upper-class life vicariously through our kids. It's better than nothing I suppose.

It's hopeless for those who not born into wealth or aren't naturally gifted savants. However it's not pointless. The majority of folk are mediocre but they can still get ahead by either being incredibly lucky or incredibly restraint; and once you're ahead, your family will benefit from that and strive further than you ever could. The point is to give your kids the opportunity of a lifetime: to live in the nicer areas, go to the nicer schools, and to explore their natural talents without letting work life depress it.

I'm sincerely beginning to believe that a lot of programming comp packages are fake. Several of the offers I got were from household names (SpaceX, HP, Keysight, Palo Alto Networks), and they were all lower than my already "measly" $140k, for senior or staff level positions.

$200k+ *cash* offers haven't been a thing since like 2014, then they sorta came back in 2020, and now they're gone again.

I think people just like to put their unvested RSU figures into their "salary" to make themselves sound/feel better.

Four years.
Zero raises.
Seven years on the IT help desk.

I’m 35, and recently I was in a car crash. In those moments afterward—when everything slowed down and your mind clings to what it knows—I realized what I was actually thinking about.

Not the car.
Not the money.

I was thinking about my CompTIA IT fundamentals, the tickets waiting for me, and whether I was still making my boss happy.

As strange as that sounds, it hit me hard.

This job has shaped how I think under pressure. It trained my brain to stay calm, troubleshoot, and keep going even when everything feels broken. That mindset showed up when I didn’t expect it—when it mattered.

I’m also grateful for my coworkers, who somehow always find more tasks for me. Truly. Those piled-on responsibilities forced me to grow, to learn, and to carry more than I thought I could. God bless them.

The crash didn’t just rattle my car—it reset my perspective. I’m thankful to be here, thankful for the people I work with, and thankful for the skills that stuck with me even in a moment of shock.

Sometimes it takes a hard stop to see what’s really been building you all along.

unless you're a complete sperg who can't communicate, take this as a sign they want to kick you out eventually
you get some cunt companies who will have a job spot open that they cycle people through for some reason

Is anyone looking for any workers or help on a project or something? I'm 4 years into an underpaid webdev TS/React remote job and I can feel myself yearning for something different. If anyone has any opportunities: cellsinterlinked2049@proton.me

Being smart quirky and passionate used to be about doing what makes you happy each day

Until niggas found chinese japanese and korean media and bicker about it across every single social media platform out there becoming soulless wagies with no motion, no hoes, no nothing. No wonder jews and cinaks calls us cattle and fankui

anon, companies need experts and people can't just guess someone died instead of, say, took a long break from work or whatever.
and you are retarded if you think employment gaps mean anything in the professional world.

I just silence all notifications from women in our company. Best decision I've ever made. 99% of the time it's just a woman having a woman moment. Sometimes they'll just go bother somebody else. Either way it's saved me a ton of time.

Are you guys finding yourself insanely depressed this new year? Most new years get me pretty fucked but it only really hit this year.

Stop that. Everything is shit and getting worse. Fuck you.

My boss keeps going to me for IT problems instead of IT and at this point I've been pretty much "idk" even though I know the fixes and our outsourced ITtards don't.

no, it has always been hyper-competitive and mostly hire-to-fire crunch-BASED project cycles

not my fault you can't hack it

>>107782575
the "dont hire anyone who has never accomplished anything its only 25 bux to publish an app BRO" copypasta is from like 2016

All my jobs are deadbeat shit. I feel like I'm stuck here as a retainer without any actual security, authority, or scale. I have no idea what to even look for anymore. My boss always asks for my opinion on shit and I give him the pros and cons and he'll just sit on it for weeks/months only to shelve it and then bring it back 3-4 months later. This has been all my fucking projects and it's driving me insane.
>>
>>107782641
There are bootcampers that still have jobs to this day only because they got in in 2016
>>
>>107782735
anon, you do know that people can learn by doing, right? also, bootcampers might still get hired, if they are good and have done networking. the real problem is the amount of retards that graduate each year, and no one seems to trust the COVID generation.
>>
>>107782772
Sure. But OP said hypercompetitive. Hypercompetitive is like med school or high finance. Quant is hypercompetitive. Rando boot camp grad/ cs degree from shit school with shit grades is not hypercompetitive. Tech has never been hypercompetitive
>>
why can't I get a teams message and it's something cool instead, everytime it's a teams message its a retarded fucking question. i miss being in tier 1 and teams chatting my coworkers stupid tickets to laugh at....

i feel pretty ok though im stuck with some shitty tasks at work

anyway i cant believe americans getting weaned off of their 200k starting tech jobs and having to live like an average european for like 3 years was enough to push them into electing temu mussolini in a hail mary attempt to get that ball rolling again
>>
>>107783221
They still don't live like us Europoors. The biggest complaint the people ITT have is that their $120k job (they don't pay taxes on income) is only hybrid and they have to deal with mildly annoying coworkers.

I am going to start my first ever WFH position with my first work laptop and would like to know how you guys use it at home.
Do you connect it to your main PC's monitor(s), keyboard, etc. using a dock/KVM switch, or have a dedicated setup or just rawdog it by simply using the laptop itself?

now I need to call my team lead and explain that he needs to go back into the office so that he can prepare the demonstration in my stead because I typed my password in wrong twice

my work gave me the budget for my own peripherals + 2 monitors that come with a sort of docking system

>>107783985
So you have a separate "work station" apart from your personal desktop PC?

I have a work macbook connected to my monitor which has a hub built in. My personal PC is also connected to the same hub. But I can switch easily.

>I am going to start my first ever WFH position with my first work laptop and would like to know how you guys use it at home
I have a big executive U-shaped desk (picrel), I have my personal desktop on one side, work laptop with monitor for the work laptop on another side, and the last side is just a hutch with my printer and i'll put random papers that are supposedly important with the occasional loose loaded firearm just sitting there
>>107783985
I didn't get a budget, i already had a spare monitor but i did request a docking station
>tell work my office desk is wired for ethernet
>ask for a docking station with ethernet port
>they send me a docking station with just HDMI and USB ports and some sd card slots
>bruh.jpg
>they give me a return label to take it to UPS
>20 min drive away

>get there
>since i didnt have the box UPS makes me pay $4 for return packaging
