Let's say I pay you $1 million to use nothing but Windows 98 for all your computing needs for an entire month. I give you a Pentium 4 machine with a 3 GHz clock speed, 2 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of local storage. You are free to install all the upgrades you want including SE and unofficial updates like C++ Redistributable 2008, use KernelEx, and use DLL's from XP and ReactOS if you need them.Do you think you could do this? What would you do to make Windows 98 usable for your needs in 2026?
>>107773782i can do without a computer for a month if nothing else, i don't really care that much
>>107773782I'd say anyone who can't do it needs to be executed
For a month? That's nothing. I've never had a job requiring the use of a computer and I can just watch all the low-res anime and cartoons I want.
Where do I sign? I can start this right now. Make it more challenging/interesting and choose something like NeXTSTEP or OpenSolaris instead of Win98.
>>107773782I litterally cannot survive a week anymore without my smartphone. It's tied to a dozen thing vital to my work & lifestyle.
>>107773973same i'd just read books
>>107773782Bruh that's easy mode.
this would be so easy, I just need an internet connection and a comfy chair
>>107773782Glady and I am going to get an easy itFor music: I have 3000+ file midi collection but also TCPMP media player and 2004 wavepad that can play a ton of MP3s For games: Expert software 40 games, Microsoft game pack, 2010 pysol for card games, and my favorite chips challenge. For graphics: Photoshop 5.0 and Microsoft PhotodrawFor images: Infranview and PolyviewFor pdf: adobe acrobat For notes : WordpadFor Internet: Retrozilla and Kmelon on FrogfindFor system maintenance: Coral Soft Task Manager and 2000s ccleanerAlso After Dark ftwThe only thing I'm really missing is GIMP and GEGL. You are going to owe me big time. So get ready to sign that check
>>107774056A million dollars on the line and you're worried about your job?
>>107773782I already do that. Want my bitcoin wallet?
>>107773782windows 98 won't boot with 2GB of RAM
>>107774463Patchable.
>>107773782>Let's say I pay you $1 million to use nothing but Windows 98 for all your computing needs for an entire month.I'm European and that's more money than I will ever earn working, so yes, of course. How is this even a a question?
>>107773782>Do you think you could do this? What would you do to make Windows 98 usable for your needs in 2026?just leave it running with looped music and do other stuff
>>107773782>Do you think you could do this?Very easily, yes. You're asking the board most notorious for getting a hardon for older operating systems and suffering from tech nostalgia if they'd use W98 for a month and get paid.>What would you do to make Windows 98 usable for your needs in 2026?Visual Basic 6.0 I guess it is. The list of cozy IDEs in this era is not very long. Probably I would torrent and pirate a few old games also for fun. If I could have a few days to prep I'd probably throw together some ragtag Win32 text editor IDE.
1 million for this challenge is an absolute bargain. I suffer for one month without modern vidya or doomscrolling, and I get paid enough money to not have to work for another 10 years after being fired from my job for not being able to use a computer.
>>107773782for 1 month? just install doom, quake and a nes/snes emulator and I'm done, niggawhere's my million?
>>107773782For $1 million I'll go without electricity entirely.
>>107773782>Let's say I pay you 1 million in one yearThere's zero reason for anyone on this board to refuse. I'm a little confused. Are you an llm trying to slide? A glownigger that doesn't understand goyim poverty? 1 million is more than most of the American public even if that is still just upper middle class now. For anyone overseas the difference is even more stark since despite having some better things in their country the biggest factors affecting their cost of living: space and food, is attrociously bad. Even if nothing I did worked I would use it for the money alone and I don't think anyone here would answer differently
That's baby mode. Give me something harder.
Yeah OP, without compromising modern connectivity at all, this is just same-same but slower.
>>107773782>cargo cult thinking
>>107773782>Zoomers think THAT is hard.
>>107773782i think i'd enjoy it. only need a browser good enough to browse 4chan which i think is still possible, and there's plenty of good games for itthose specs are overkill btw, windows 98 doesn't even support 2GB of ram
>>107773782So I get 1 million and a cool new computer to play with.
The only proplem is not using the phone outside. Messenging, uber and a lot of other mundane stuff is tied to a phone now.
>>107773782If this challenged involved living without a phone it would actually be insanely hard
>>107777346Not insainly hard. But pretty annoying. Nothing that serious if we're talking about $1 million.
>>107773782Deal, give me 1 million and i'll do it for you, i'll even show you how I did it after using it for a month.
>>107773782You've given me basically the setup I already have. The only dealbreaker is 128GB of storage. I need more than that for all my files.
>>107775331>Give me something harder.As you wish.>*unzip dick*
>>107773782Easily. Shit, I'll take that deal right now, no thought required. Only caveat, I need access to at least a dumb phone
>>107773782easy, all computer is for is 4chan and hacking away at c code (compiler + kernel dev)
>>107777911I hope you have a thing for fat hairy neckbeards, otherwise it won't stay hard for very long.
>>107773782I was just without internet for about six weeks and without power due to a blizzard for about three weeks. I don't need any tech to get by at all. I was just reading and ice fishing instead.
>>107773782It won't run. Windows 9x famously shits itself if there's more than about 512MB RAM.
>>107778554there are various tweaks which can let you get around that. The simplest is just to limit the amount of usable ram in the startup.ini, but you can also use patch to use up to 2 GB.
>>107773782
>>107773782I can go a month without a PC (and often do) so hand over the money.
>>107773782Let's say I ass rape you in the anus and steal the 1 million, plus anything else you have, and them sploog gallons of cum in your butthole?
>>107773782Yes
>>107773782For a million dollars I’d just play solitaire all month. Stupid question
>>107775168I need a ride or die CS 1.6 server or run a CS Source server with professional tournament level players maintaining themThen i want to grind that shit til we can set up tournaments with cash prizesThey would get sponsored, the commercial viability is immense if you just hook into the Counter Strike 2 crowdParticularly older veteran players looking for a nostalgia rushAlso load Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 + 2The Sims + Bustin Out all expansion packs
>>107773782>Let's say I pay you $1 millionnigga I'd do much worse things for one milliondo niggas realize that many people subject themselves to countless humiliating and shit jobs to make a fraction of that for all their lives.
>>107773782Easily.
>>107779999>>107777777
>>107773782needs teams, aws, citrix desktop, other corporate vpns and rdp apps, and office 2016
>>107773782Add a vodoo 6 card and you've got a deal.
>>107774145>TCPMP media playerJebus blast from the past. I was using that on palm os and windows mobile.
>>107773782Sounds actually doable. I'm not sure if sites like 4chan could be decently browsed through nowadays with that hardware, but I used to many many years ago in a XP machine with 512mb of DDR ram and a 1.8 GHz P4 (real slow shit).
>can listen to music>can read books>there's still internet explorer so i guess the time it load up anna's archive i'll have time to do my pull-upsall good for me.just give me 1000 ,i would be ashamed to take that much money doing nothing.
>>107773782Even if it would be Windows 7/10/11, I would just not use computer for a month and then go back to Linux and live with passive income rest of my life.
>>107774091I think I'd probably want access to Project Gutenberg, but then again, Project Gutenberg looks just like it did 20 years ago, so it'd probably run just fine on Netscape or Internet Explorer using Windows 98. 4chan and Reddit might be kinda hard to access with such an old computer, however.
>>107779601>School DaysAt one point this was THE absolute peak of the eroge industry simply because it was an eroge that had actual animation. Nowadays we got eroge with bouncy sprites that have actual responsive animations, but at the time School Days was the 2001: A Space Odyssey of Japanese erotic games.
>>107779581i stopped using win9x in 2004, so i really can't imagine using 2G of ram in it, like that's an insane amount of ram for what that os was designed for
>>107781361school days is an eroge?
>>107773973thisprobably just play osrs or 2004scape, and if not, then I'd go travelling, on outings, or go read, etc
