This reminds me that Intel Coffee Lake could be deployed with DDR3, it is time for 14nm to rule supreme once again.
>>
>>107789527

No need for retooling
Nodes are never really superseded, new nodes are mearly added to a fab's capabilities while older nodes continue production.
>>
>>107789596
Maybe, maybe not. Chemicals, gasses, implant processes, all sorts of things can go out of use between nodes. It's not necessarily expensive in cash or man hours to switch back but it is in down time for testing and validation and certification. I think this would hit the photolithography tools the hardest since they depreciate the fastest and get junked soonest. You can probably do the same processes on the newer better tool but that just adds even more validation time and is under-utilizing it.
>>
>>107789536
They have tons of broken chips lying around still.
>>
>>107789508
For AMD, they probably still have Zen 3 dies collecting dust. Not sure why Nvidia is making more Ampere chips unless Samsung 10nm is cheap as dirt or they still have a number of unsold GA106 chips to pair with GDDR6 chips.
>>
>>107789577
Coffee Lake cannot support DDR3. The memory controller only handles UDIMM DDR4. You go back to Haswell/Broadwell for DDR3. For AMD, you have to go Pilediver and older.

>>
>>107789508
Can they at least produce a revised version? the Switch 2's Ampere based GPU contains revisions from the the Ada Lovelace architecture, and put in a bigger embedded cache like the 40 series, it made a huge differencr.
Nvidia are probably too stingy for this, you'd be lucky if they made a bare minimum 12GB version, nope, enjoy being hamstrung by insufficient ram.

>>
>>107792429
it's likely more about the type of vram vs. the amount of it. older ram types can be made on different/older equipment, which may have more available production capacity than the latest stuff. though that doesn't entirely explain it, as both the 3060 and 4060 uses GDDR6 vram, so why not make more 4060's?
>>
>>107792429
>>107792487
actually, the 4060 and 5060 use a 5nm process and the 3060 an 8nm process, so perhaps it's that, 5nm fabs aren't available so they want to make more 8nm stuff instead

Most people haven't moved onto ddr5 nor ditched their 3050s because it wasn't *and still isn't* worth it.
There were no major upgrades, you didn't unlock an amazing amount of frames or better graphics and frame gen is so comically garbage due to both input lag and the fact that it would do crazy shit with fire/flame effects and invent random bullshit in the distance that nobody really saw the point in upgrading to a gpu that needs an anti-sag bracket and keeps catching fire.

It's not sending you back in time. It's making your current tech obsolete. Pretty soon all computing will be done off site and streamed back to your device. And that will be a good thing. Imagine never needing to upgrade your hardware or tinker with overclocking bullshit. By 2030 your 50-series will be worth as much as a DVD player was in 2015. Building PCs will be a niche collector hobby like maintaining physical media libraries.

>I want amd to backport zen4 and 5 to am4.
That would be insanely fucking sweet, AM5 is a huge clusterfuck.

>I also want a stack of hbm ram to be included on the cpu.
My dream is to have an APU with decent number of execution units (this will be coming with Medusa Halo which will have a 24CU "medium" sized version), with onboard HBM memory. It either wouldn't need RAM slots or it would work without any RAM installed. Yeah you can't upgrade your memory but in return you have something like 500+ GB/s bandwidth.
But I realise now that even if they made such a thing, the issue would be AMD giving completely fucked up shit support for such a thing. Even Vega 56 had some games it just did not work with whatsoever throughout its entire support history.

>Whatever happened to that amd apu from back in the day that was supposed to have a cpu, gpu and hbm all on one chip?
HBM cost is very high so they are only using it for enterprise stuff which they can sell at 50x the price of consumer products.
