Aged better than the intels they competed against. Remember that the FX chips were competing against the Pentium's and i3's in terms of price. It was either the FX-6300 or a Pentium. Or the FX-8350 or an i3. And compared to those two cpu's the FX performs better.

>Remember that the FX chips were competing against the Pentium's and i3's in terms of price
That's what makes em so underrated, stupid ass reviewers at the time were bitching that a $195 CPU from AMD wasn't taking the high end crown from a $330 i7, meanwhile price for price, Intel couldn't even compete, especially at the $130 price point the FX-6300 existed at, We're talking Ivy Bridge dual core Pentium shit with only two threads, meanwhile an FX-6300 would have 6 threads, would run fine on a cheap ass motherboard because 95W unlike the 8350 which would make a cheap board throttle, just unbelievable price to performance, Tom from Moore's Law is dead was right when he said 2012-2016 was an amazing era for budget builds.

i had an 8350 and i couldnt even run black ops 1
a fucking 360 game
>>
>>107801146
You must've been doing something wrong because an FX-8350 that isn't straight up throttling due to configuration errors in the way the computer was build runs BO1 just fine.

And by 2014 on sale you could get the FX-6300 for just $90 and the FX-8320 for $120. And AMD motherboards were cheaper as well compared to Intel. If you built a $500 or cheaper system in those days there was zero reason to go for Intel in those days.
>>
>>107801230
The times where the 6300 was $89.99 was fucking crazy, 16GB of RAM for like $90 as well, just absolutely insane the decent rigs you could build because it was before all the mining and AI nonsense.

I wanna go back, yeah my current i7 is faster than n FX-8350 and uses 65w, but I have never had as much fun with a computer as I did when that 125w motherfucker, first overclock, my first full graphics core being the 7970, so much fun.
>>
Pic related plus 8gb gskill ripjews was my /hsg/ setup for a couple years when I brought it out of retirement until about a year ago when I stopped playing vidya so I repurposed my gaming pc to my new server and reretired it.

Yeah like in 2015 you got so much out of a PC for so cheap. For less than $500 you could get the following:
CPU: $90 AMD FX-6300
CPU Cooler: $13 Deepcool GAMMAXX 200T (I bought an FX-6300 in 2015 and that stock cooler sounded like a Jet Engine)
MB: $40 Gigabyte GA-76LMT-USB3 AM3+
Ram: $60 16gb (4x4gb) G-Skill Ripjaws 1866mhz DDR3 (shitty MB probably won't let it run at that speed but 1866mhz was cheaper than 1600mhz)
Storage: $35 Adata SP600 64gb SSD + $52 WD Blue 1tb
GPU: $160 PowerColor PCS+ Radeon R9 380 4gb (basically as fast as a 1050ti)
Case: $20 Shitty DIYPC Matx case
PSU: $33 Thermaltake TR2 700W 80 plus bronze

total: $503

honestly those cpus were such a shit value for anything other than rendering/transcoding, an overclocked core 2 quad will out perform them in most games of that era, 2015 was a great time to buy used, lga 1366 / lga 1156 and lga 775 ,phenoms were dirt cheap, and all offered better performance in most cases.
>>
>>107801841
FX CPUs were sick anon, Core 2 CPUs were pretty good for dirt cheap builds, but you were still on an old platform with no USB 3 on the board and dealing with used hardware, FX would get you a new chip, new board etc
>>
>>107802626
io cards are pretty cheap anon, considering how the fx chips struggle against even the older phenoms, it just isnt a good buy, only chips that were half decent were the 8350 and later 8320e/8370 because they were cheap, give you decent multi threading performance, every thing else is just the same or slower than older generation chips, even overclocked, they didnt sell even at bargin bin prices for a reason., they are just terrible in general.

I had a Q6600 until Ryzen came out, and I really wished I had not been a pussy and got an FX-6300 in late 2013, because building a PC wasn't that hard and I would've gotten more for my money, even if it would've cost a little more for the platform, I would've had DDR3 instead of DDR2, more modern instructions, better motherboards with solid caps even on the low end, which didn't exist in the Core 2 era, FX stuff is shockingly usable now because the CPU performance is pretty decent and you can load it up with 32GB of RAM.
>>
it's insane how expensive PC hardware has gotten
it all changed with the ethereum mining craze + covid and it's not recovered
>>

>I really wished I had not been a pussy and got an FX-6300 in late 2013
You didn't miss out on anything, I had one and it was crap. Dolphin and PCSX2 ran fine on the Q6600 yet struggled on the FX-6300.
>>
>>107802867
I picked up a used p35 board + 8gb + intel xeon quad for a grand total of $60 canadian pesos in 2016, it could basically do everything i needed , it wasnt until ~2020 where the lack of instructions started to catch up on it, it could still push over 60fps in every thing I played, could handle vp9 decode ect , if you managed to get a ddr3 board you can put 16gb of ram in those boards fairly cheaply, that platform had ridiculous longevity, easily outlived fx. if you spent a little more you could get an lga 1156 or 1366 system which are still absolutely superior to fx , there is no year where bulldozer was a good buy.
>>
>>107802916
it was only cheap for a while though, back when you had to be paying attention to northbridge/southbridge chipsets, mobos and processors were on average more expensive than they are now (but gpus were cheap)
on top of that you had to upgrade way more frequently than you do now
>>
>>107802982
true you had to upgrade more often but the upgrades actually amounted to something. nvidia has been selling rhe same dogshit + ai for years now
>>
>>107801507
The 78LMT-USB3 was such a good board. It was one of two matx boards that could run an 8-core.
>>
>>107803030
ah yes, one of the great joys of am3 , i almoas forgot that you had to be careful which board you got ,because many of them didnt have thermal protection and would literally catch fire if you used the 8 core chips and did any oc.
>>
>>107803030
>It was one of two matx boards that could run an 8-core
It can technically "run it" but that 4 phase VRM is not gonna hold 4GHz base clock on an FX-8350 without throttling, you need at the very least a 6 phase VRM to run it, it would likely get the classic 1.4GHz thottling issues or straight up crash, depending how the board handles it, but it would not work Prime95 stable.

>>107803044
I say it all the time but AMD should've policed AM3+ better, the 8 core chips should've never been allowed on 970 motherboard or stuff like the 78LMT, those motherboards with 95W stuff like the FX-6300 were an amazing buy, but all they did allowing 125W stuff on shitty boards is give FX a bad name when it doesn't work right and your vidya is stuttering.
>>
>>107803060
mine did 4.2 GHz without throttling, 80mm fan on the vrm heatsink.
>>
>>107801260
>but I have never had as much fun with a computer as I did when...
You had fun because things were cheaper? Or because you grew out of toys?
>>
>>107803333
Based, I should've added that the vrm can provide the current to run 8 cores maxed out, but not with passive cooling, 4 phases stepping down the voltage is not enough, it gets too hot without a fan on it and throttles, so that is also a fix for throttling, but a lot of people building FX 8350s on low end boards didn't know that sp they think the CPU sucks

>>107803398
Probably a little bit of both, I had built my FX8350 in anticipation for GTA V, the last game I ever was excited about, so I didn't care that my CPU was pulling 150w or more with the 4.5GHz oc, or that my 7970 was a 250w chud of a card, my CPU was cheaper than intel and unlocked, which made it fun, also I was 18 years old at the time, so part of it is becoming an old bastard, now I have efficient parts and run Linux, so radically different than I was in 2014.
