Why are AMD and Intel laptop CPUs all called AI now? What makes them special? Is it just Microsoft forcing OEMs to do it?
AI make line go up so everything is AI now
its the same cpu with more capitalism added to it
>>107803339A laptop is AI if it has more than 8GB or RAM. 8 for the OS, and the rest for AI
AI :O
>>107803339because E = MC^2 + AI, saar
https://old.reddit.com/r/BuyFromEU/comments/1q6rkm3/megathread_the_ai_cartel_tech_giants_are_locking/TLDR: BigAI is locking people in to use only their products (Gemini, Copilot) by moving proprietary AI features to hardware level, so competitors like Mistral have no chance.
are normies actually buying this crap?with the .com bubble I think people didn't have a strong opinion about it, now it seems most people hate ai, so this might backfire hard, but maybe I am in a bubble and most normies love it.
>>107803339It has an NPU. They are like tensor cores in an nvidia gpu.
for windows at least, the only real ai stuff in it is built in copilot (trash) recall (spyware), ai enhanced search (actually useful) and ai enhanced cropping (doesnt work half the time), thats about it so far and its actually laughable how little use it has for the most part
>>107803925the ai "enhanced" cropping in action
>>107803339Buzzwords for marketing
>>107803339AI means they have some AI accelerator backed into CPU (read: wasted die space) that has no drivers and only work with Microshit copilot. I don't know if AMD's XDNA now works through ROCm because ROCm doesn't work most of the time by itself but Intel's shit doesn't even have any support. You can't use those accelerators to run things like Pytorch (read: 90% AI and ML applications). And don't look at the models training, this shit is pure CUDA.
>>107803339What >>107803725 said. They have a NPU baked into the CPU. It already shows up in Task Manager if your CPU has it.
>>107803339You're not ANTI-AI, are you op?

>>107804761>You can't use those accelerators to run things like Pytorch (read: 90% AI and ML applications). That is the dumbest part.If you're going to use shit like Copilot you might as well run it server side.Local models could actually have benefited from dedicated hardware but they'll never let people do that.
>>107806227>>107804761The ironic part is that Apple's MLX and M-series chips works far better and is easier for developers to port over from pytorch. llama.cpp is first-class on the chips, can run SDXL through comfyui, even fucking protein folding stuff like ESM-3 has been ported. How developers have so much issue with AMD and Intel stuff compared to Apple is baffling.
>>107803339>What is an AI PC?It's a PC with a button that launches Crappilot.
>>107803339It's like GNU + LinuxIt's branding, not anything anyone cares about
>>107806296It really gives the 90's vibe of dedicated e-mail and "WWW" buttons.
>>107804793>Most hate comes from artfags. No I think at this point most hate is coming from gamers and PC hobbyists who hate the fact that all of the hardware has tripled in price over the last 3 years. Also add in the fact that large swaths of the USA has seen over a 100% increase in electricity/power costs, and you get a lot of angry people because people generally don't like it when the cost of goods and services goes up for them.
>>107804761blatantly wrong nvidia shill post. llama.cpp has npu support, vllm has npu support, and so does pytorch, not to mention on the Intel side you can use ipex.
>>107806325Anyone remembers the turbo button?
>>107806391That was super useful though. It let you run your PC slower so old games remained playable.

I do not know. I just got an "AI PC", it has one of those AMD AI with some accelerator and the copilot button.I started it up, created the local account, pressed the copilot button, and the setting asking me what the button should do opened. I finished the setup by installing Linux.

>>107803339yeah they just pay them to put a copilot button on themi mean it'll be useful when windows has a fully agentic variant, but that's still <5 years off
>>107803339Remember when a phone wasn't good enough? It had to be a smartphone? Smart thermostat? Smart toaster?Yeah. Say hello to the AI toaster.
AI will be forced down ours throats no matter whether we want it or not.I am keeping my iPhone 15 until the heat death of the universe at this point instead of getting a Gemini Android or Apple Intelligence iPhone that can waste 25 GB of my storage by sifting through my personal files And on desktop Linux will be the only choice
>>107803339Investoooors are happy if product has "AI" smeared all over it.It's the "smart" of this generation.
>>107803339it typically refers to a pc with an npu in it. when dell talks about ai pcs, that's what they mean.
>>107803339If I had to guess I'd say some built in ASIC AI accelerator logic? But probably just means it comes bundled with shovelware.
>>107804793>People older than 55 are.everything that dell makes now has an npu in it. the market driver for these pcs is simply windows 11 compatibility, no one actually cares about the ai part.

It's the same CPU but with a blessing from Israel
