Why did it take FOSS developers 30 years to realise that no one fucking likes middle click to paste?

You are brown.

It's actually a really cool behavior: just select something, then middle-click elsewhere to replicate the selection. It kinda blew my mind, everyone knows copy and paste, but here you DON'T copy, just select and middle-click.

I select shit all the time without wanting to copy it. Moreover, the middle mouse button has a comparative advantage in navigation (ie drag-to-scroll) which more than negates any hypothetical pasting advantage the MMB has over hitting Ctrl+V.

Does anybody actually still use Gnome? I'm convinced it's some kind of "The Producers"-style fraud where they decided if they make it unusable, they can still leech funds to maintain a big-name project, but won't have to do any work, because who's going to find and complain about bugs if there's no users?

Gnome is for headless servers, almost none of its users have a mouse in their setup.

>but here you DON'T copy
actually you copy on every single select

If Linux is not Unix, then what is it really?

unix-like

I use it extensively. I dont really want to install something for that feature but I guess what's the best way to replicate that functionality?

At work we used to run a JetBrains IDE through a docker container through a Windows X server. We don't do that anymore and it was really dumb but all selections automatically being copied was infuriating since I'd be selecting something to search for it and then whatever I had in my clipboard prior kept getting overwritten. The automatic selections should have only been kept in the middle mouse buffer but VcXsrv was overwriting the windows one too.

this is great as well

Middle-click is ancient, it’s supposed to only copy the current highlighted text, but so many tools try to sync up middle-click and normal copy paste, and it never works quite right. Middle-click to paste made sense when mice had 3 big buttons and no scroll-wheel, and the only thing you were going to be copying and pasting was text. I also dislike it because it implicitly copies (originally at least, X didn’t have a copy buffer, when you middle clicked it’d just ask the server for the most recent highlighted text and input it, rather than copying shit every time you highlighted it). This can cause a ton of annoying issues if something tries to synchronise the two clipboards.

Why isn't it user configurable? Am I being unreasonable?

Why remove the feature?
