/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

I set my old PC parts up so I can SSH into it any time and it's been stable for 3 days. I haven't done anything else.

I'm retarded and vacation ends soon so I got lazy and used tailscale so I can set up a less pozzed ssh method later.

I bought a domain too so I can set up some shit friends and family can use.... not sure what to do next guys. the computer's empty. 4TB RAID 1.

why not have a free duckdns record?

Also, you need a script to ensure your public ip doesnt change and when it does, update your DNS record

I actually have a script doing that already, connected to my host. I know about gay dynamic IP already

I bought 2 26TB WD Red Pros over the holiday and they just got delivered. They were $500 + I received 10% back on my Prime card so ~$450 each which makes it $17.30/GB. Seeing prices now that is now around $540.
Am I good to return or are we at a state where I should keep these? Also my existing NAS has 5 12TB drives so not sure what I can begin to do with these
>>
>>107816221
No one knows for sure but as I said I bought two dozen HDDs. I'm literally betting on this not stopping anytime soon. If it's returning them or not eating this month yeah of course return them, if you can afford it and need the space or spares hold on to them for dear fucking life.

I fucked up and held off buying HDDs.
Should I get this now? I need more space.
It's $469 * 13% tax + $108 shipping = $638. Or $24.5/TB.
In comparison, new HDDs are usually $33/TB now.

theres multiple different costs involved in retrieving the data, but a rough formula is 100x what it costs to store per month
so akchewully it would only cost $0.10 to retrieve that 1GB
another e.g. it costs $0.50 to store 500GB
but would cost $50.00 to retrieve

t. not a shill but someone who did the math last week when trying to decide between AWS Glacier Deep Archive vs Google Cloud Storage: Archival class. Google's costs are quite similar, a bit more expensive to store, I think slightly cheaper to retrieve, but in the same ballpark for both. But I went with Amazon's cheaper storage price plus I didn't want to put all my eggs in the Google basket anyway.

I've been arching libgen for a while now and would like to start seeding back to the community. I don't have any ports exposed on my router for security reasons.
If i were to expose a port to my seedbox on my router, what precautions should i take? webserver torrent client is set to local login only.
are there security risks of someone finding a way to jump to port 22 after my router forwards any incoming traffic matching my forward rules??

I’m planning host some side projects, mainly webapps, (you know, a fronted, an API as a backend, and something for the database), and I want to use docker to simplify the deployment.

For that I don’t need a system with multiples HDDs in raid mode, and I was thinking about mini pcs (similar to Intel NUC) mainly because these two reasons:

They are small in size
They have a low electricity consumption.

Obviously, I plan to install Linux on them and use them as a server (no GUI, only terminal access)

Do you know about good models or recommend anyone?

And yes, I thought about Raspberry pi, but right now, for the same or a few bucks more than a rpi4 8GB (plus minimal accessories) cost, I cant get a real PC with standardized hardware ports for future expansion. But maybe you have a different opinion. I’m glad to hear you then

Thank you all!
>>
>>107820527
No. But use a maintained torrent client and keep it updated.

Anyone having issues with sunshine/moonlight?
For whatever reason I don't seems to be able to get the moonlight client to connect to the sunshine server.
I tried the flatpak and repo version, both giving weird bugs.
But the android version work fine.
So any idea how to troubleshoot this?

I wouldn't get any thing else, I don't understand why so many people on /hsg/ are so obsessed with enterprise hardware, when you can do 90% with these mini pc.

This is my homeserver, (NAS, Media Server, Emulation/game Box, Arr Stack, SSH Box, VM docker)
It's running Endeavor OS since I'm using it as HTPC as well.
Cost fraction of the price, for the same performance.

Hello frens, I am interested in a home server to store a metric ton of data, I thought it would be fun to use an actual rack mounted server for once.

How bad of an idea would it be to use a Supermicro CSE-825? I live in an apartment, so noise is a potential problem, not sure how bad these are, would having them behind two doors be enough to quiet them down?

I need a wired connection between opposite corners of my house, can't drill holes due to being a rentcuck, and I didn't want a thick ugly cat6 cable. So I've just ordered some 0.9mm semi-transparent fibre instead.
Anyone worked with this stuff? Like running it along skirting boards (baseboards) etc. Any recommendations for gluing/otherwise securing it?

>you actually need to test your backups.

had a client that their backup failed.
every day they would put a tape in, take the old tape that had popped out and take it off site.
next day repeat.
server crashes.
we come in and have to fix it.
we did not setup the backup and they never wanted us to test it.
found out that every day when the backup started it failed (can't remember why), and the tape would be ejected. no notification.
It's been so long I can't remember if the drive failed, or the tapes failed or what but they had no backup for something like 2 years. the only backup they had was an old server that used to be their server and they had just unplugged it and put it aside.
I was never so happy to not have to deal with the restore.
>>
>>107827047
How do you test a backup procedure without downtime?
>>
>>107827059
do a backup.
include a large folder with random data.
perform a backup.
then perform a restore to the same location and a different one.

if all that works then most likely the backup will work.
no one ever verified that the backups had ever taken place.

very few clients ever wanted to test doing a full restore.
