they still make 6 + FRC displays?

16 million to 1 billion colors is generally seen as enough.
>>

Oh, I just realized that OP doesn't realize that the 32bit was 8 bits per channel, which is what the LCD bits are referencing.

Keep complaining we'll return to Silver Age Comic standards of 64 colors max.

There is truly no such thing as 32bit color, it was just 24bit color with an extra byte of wasted padding. 32bit color only existed for performance reasons.

4th byte is for alpha

I'm glad you approve, Technology Overlord.
>>
>>107820899
Really? I thought actual panels go up to 10-bit only.
>>
>>107820263
You're confusing bit-depth with bits per channel.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_depth

Most VGA video cards you used CRTs with only had 8-bit DACs, only some professional GPUs had 10-bit DACs.

Many consumer displays accept 12-bit input too but it's processed onboard and still displayed as 10-bit.
>>
>>107821002
>>107821013
Not saying youre wrong, just adding. Actually wondering if it's a real 12-bit display.

Alpha does not exist for the frame buffer.

My display can do 16bpc, I am pretty sure this depends on the LUT, because as it happens I know mine has a 48 bit LUT.

8 bit is enough if you do your graphics in a higher bit depth and then add dithering that changes every frame when converting from linear to sRGB. It adds a kino grain.
>>
>>107820263
crts dont actually have an upper limit for bit depth , they have a limited range., but the number of steps within that range is basically infinite since its analog, if you have a dac capable of 10 or 12 bits per channel, it can display it just fine, though there are few that do, i think maybe the only cards to support that are ancient ati firepros , quadros .from the early 2000s

>>107821035
depends on the hardware, i think most modern hardware supports alpha certain hardware planes for compositing

CS launch options still allow for -freq if using a CRT

Granted goldsrc engine only recognizes 100fps. I still utilize
>-freq 120
with vsync on, for proton pack like zero recoil, legitimately. If I'm using an LCD, I use the
>refresh 75
launch option with vsync off. Graphically it's rougher, but my recoil is close to playing on the CRT that way. Close, being a conceit.

Always though it was insane they couldn't implement this is hardware.

Pretty sure every horizontal resolution is dividable by 4?
So why not just grab "words" of 96 bits and map them to 4 pixels in hardware?

I use 640 X 480 in CS 1.6

32bit color benefits the cpu. Cpus don't have a 24bit mov instruction.

CRTs are analog and don't have bit depth

That's why I use 10 bits for each channel plus an extra two for the green one lmao. And I replace sRGB's pseudo-gamma with a gamma of 2.0 to simplemaxx the math.
