Why haven't you taken the mini PC pill, Anon?
*overheats*
You can find a ton of small form factor optiplexes on ebay, but if you want to add a GPU you'll need to buy a low profile card. I did this with a optiplex 9050 i5-7500 and a quadro p600, it works as a good office machine. I might buy an i7-7700 later on for 4 extra threads.
i own a house
>>107823729i did
>>107823729i have a large computer to match my comically large penis. i also don't live in a car or own a cash register.>>107823787and this
I am using an Intel NUC right now as a server for a few things. Unfortunately, it's also my file server which isn't great.
>>107823729bloatI already have a mini PC I can bring with me everywhere.
>>107823914it's that battery that will bloat, nice future spicy pillow lamo
i already did.
>>107823729Because they put 5000rpm dogshit laptop coolers on those, and I can't just expand them whenever my needs change.I use a matx board with a Jonsbo C6 case, smallest mATX case that allows full size coolers. Only downside is that it's mesh, and maybe I could stand if it was 1-1cm larger in every dimension so it can fit more fans easily. But given that it's like $50, I can't complain.
>>107823729I have.
>>107823729I'm running an asus pn51 as a home server.. it only draws 12w on idle and it can house 1nvme +1 sata 2.5' drive
>>107823729because my T level is too high so I physically can't see the appeal of computers for kids and women.maybe as I grow older and weak I'll see the appeal, I sure hope not and I'd rather kms than to turn into a woman
>>107823923>replace it in three years (or possibly longer)>or just remove it entirely to have an equivalent mini pcman that sure was hard
>>107823729I did
>>107823729can't afford it
>>107824422that looks painful
>>107824422
>>107824465It was a bit harder to work in but nothing too serious
I'm not a faggot, you see.
>>107824586That's misinformation.
because they all have shit coolingseriously, fucking spend $20 more on it and give it a bigger chassis and an adequate heatsink, that's nothing compared to how much performance you're gettingi hope the gabecube will result in a mini pc reneissance
>>107823729Yeah. I sure do love the sound of small fans whining.
>>107823729I did. Salem TechSperts on Youtube had a thing about Beelink, and I looked at them and noted the price wasn't bad for decent specs and the ability to swap out NVME, RAM, and the Fans. There's supposedly room for a 2.5 SATA too if that's your bag of dicks.Anyway my dad's computer shit the bed so I bought him one of those because his other computer is old, out of date, and he just uses it to browse emails and shit like that. Total cost from Amazon was like, 329 USD for the PC and it was there the next day. Not bad for a Ryzen 5 and 24 GB of RAM.
>>107823729this little shit is my company's production web server
>>107824655>HP
>>107824666I don't care, it cost my company 65 €
>>107823729Every few years I buy a workstation class Laptop. I like performance and portabiy
>>107824422 based deshrouder
>>107823787>t. financial illiterate
i already have a phone
>>107824856>can upgrade ram>can upgrade ssd>can upgrade fansLiterally 99% of the "customizability" of a full tower desktop PC. Discrete GPUs in 2026 are a meme anyway.
>>107824856low end hardware doesn't benefit from being part of the ATX standard, it just makes it more expensiveyou're not upgrading when every part is already bottom tier, you're replacing everything
>>107824886Mini pcs can also be fun to mod. Perhaps the cooling on my GMKtec K6 is overkill but I was a good project (ignore the silver screws, I need to find black ones that fit).
>>107825026>you're not upgrading when every part is already bottom tierUnless your a schizo putting a newer/better CPU in even a cheap motherboard is a significant upgrade
I replaced all my Raspberry Pis with mini pcs. I have 6 mini pcs.
>>107825044but in that range you're looking at old/bare minimum A series chipsetsyou're not using a better cpu on that shit, too much riski still prefer building and i'm never planning to change my mind but any normalfag that buys those isn't upgrading, the whole thing gets replaced
>>107825042lol looks like it could take off if you really drive the fanhow is the sound?
>>107825076>you're not using a better cpu on that shit, too much riskThere is no risk, that's schizo talkIf a motherboard officially supports a CPU, it will be reliable but might be power limited. The idea the board will just blow up is a delusion backed up by nothing but the VRMs getting warm
>>107825106Fan is completely silent, it's a 5V 120mm Noctua fan. Had to solder in the wires but works amazingly.
>>107823825Kek same here
Had fun putting this together a year or so ago. Only needed some slight tweaks to the internal structure and a case cover from another model with some vent holes in. I5 8400, rx 6400 and 32gb ram.
i may eventually get a mini pc because all i play these days is runescape and other non-demanding titles.
do picrel-like SFF cases use standard mini-itx motherboards and SFX power supplies
>>107824864What kind of anime girl is this?
>>107823729I considered getting on when I built an NVR. But I instead went with a miniITX N100 board and a case which fits a 3.5" HDD with no issues, and doesn't have proprietary fans that aren't designed for 24/7 use and cant be replaced when they fail, and has a normal BIOS instead of unknown chinkshit which might not even have an auto power on feature if the power was gone for whatever reason.
>>107825145Can't/won't undervolt?
>>107823729Does the Mac Studio count? I wouldn't mind taking the mini PC pill, but I would like it to have enough power for my production work.
>>107826700Haven’t tried that yet. I just slapped some PTM7950 on the main chip, snake oil ram coolers and the 3D printed case mods with added wi-fi antennas. Temps aren’t really a problem now.
>>107823729>Why haven't you taken the mini PC pill, Anon?Simple- despite being on 4chan for 20 years, I have never wavered from the fact that I am attracted to women.
>>107823729I did, I have a deskmini x600>>107823741Just put the biggest cooling you possibly can in the case, and limit the tdp in bios. Energy:perfomance is a heavily diminishing game anyway, so just undervolt it and put a cap on max powerdraw, you will only be losing very little performance.
I did. With the switch to full cloud experience, a mini pc will be plenty ressource for streaming.
Nothing more is needed
>>107823729I have this crazy mashup
>>107823729I used to be into these lil shits but realised there isn't really any advantage. Once you build it, you forget about the size and performance matters more.So what's the point of sacrificing performance for size memes? This is good to gift one of your parents as a browsing and bills machineOr run some kind of server/nas off it
>>107823729What do I need a mini PC for?
>>107828175This is my question. These are the PCs I see in shitty local businesses, for bitchy receptionists that just need to use a few different saaswares
>>107825638Generally speaking no
Beelink is the correct answer for light to moderate loads. My friend (not smart) got some American copycat mini PC then bought 2 Blower fans to modify his for cooling (no 3d printer so he gets what he gets)...The reason I dont take the mini pill is I dont live in a car and appreciate the higher top end performance I dont use. (pic related is me)
I did!
>>107823729Because I live in Brazil, which means a mini pc that costs 100 bucks in America costs like 1k+ in our currency
I did. This is actually my first linux desktop experience beyond CS classrooms (ssh-ing into production servers don't count).I have installed vscode, obsidian, and firefox so far. It's comfy but I really don't know what I want to do with this beyond that yet.
>>107823729Use case? I have the space for a regular sized one and I don’t move it.
>>107824334>2.5' driveJesus christ. Does the drive double as a coffee table?
>>107823729Why is it this shape though? I want to upgrade my HTPC and something like that seems optimal. But it's too narrow to put the TV stand on top of, too tall to sit under the front of the TV so you can still interact with it conveniently, and too bulky to stick to the back of the TV. I expect I'd have the same gripes about it on a desk too. What's the point of a mini PC apart from sticking it to the back of your monitor so it's out of the way and basically like an all in one PC but with more freedom to upgrade either the PC or the screen without the other?
>>107824334Protip: If that 2.5" drive is an SSD you can save even more space inside the case and improve cooling if you take it apart and just use the board. Modern SATA SSDs don't even take up half of the space inside their shell.
>>107827091edgy
>>107823729I did. GMKtek K8 plus hooked up via occulink to a 9070xtWiFi was shit so I upgraded the card and had to hotglue some antennas to it
>>107832169And the gpu
i already have one. Installed opnsense on it.
Genuine question: use case?>spaceUnless you live in a capsule hotel having this vs a small laptop or even a small desktop PC like a dell optiplex SFF is pointless. Might as well go for a dell optiplex SFF.>priceNigger, these things cost like what 200$ new and as low as 30$ used ok. I can get 10x better performance from any old stock ebay dell office desktop PC for 30$. For 200$ I can get an amazing hp Z440 with 128GB of DDR4 (currently what I have)>energyUnless energy is like 5$/kwh we're talking about maybe 10$ per year electricity savings, and you're sacrificing performance.Honestly at this point why not just by a USB-C dongle and use your android phone as a desktop computer ?picrel is CENZUB in Sissonne because I like it
