You can find a ton of small form factor optiplexes on ebay, but if you want to add a GPU you'll need to buy a low profile card. I did this with a optiplex 9050 i5-7500 and a quadro p600, it works as a good office machine. I might buy an i7-7700 later on for 4 extra threads.

Because they put 5000rpm dogshit laptop coolers on those, and I can't just expand them whenever my needs change.

I use a matx board with a Jonsbo C6 case, smallest mATX case that allows full size coolers. Only downside is that it's mesh, and maybe I could stand if it was 1-1cm larger in every dimension so it can fit more fans easily. But given that it's like $50, I can't complain.

I did. Salem TechSperts on Youtube had a thing about Beelink, and I looked at them and noted the price wasn't bad for decent specs and the ability to swap out NVME, RAM, and the Fans. There's supposedly room for a 2.5 SATA too if that's your bag of dicks.

Anyway my dad's computer shit the bed so I bought him one of those because his other computer is old, out of date, and he just uses it to browse emails and shit like that. Total cost from Amazon was like, 329 USD for the PC and it was there the next day. Not bad for a Ryzen 5 and 24 GB of RAM.

Had fun putting this together a year or so ago. Only needed some slight tweaks to the internal structure and a case cover from another model with some vent holes in. I5 8400, rx 6400 and 32gb ram.

I considered getting on when I built an NVR. But I instead went with a miniITX N100 board and a case which fits a 3.5" HDD with no issues, and doesn't have proprietary fans that aren't designed for 24/7 use and cant be replaced when they fail, and has a normal BIOS instead of unknown chinkshit which might not even have an auto power on feature if the power was gone for whatever reason.

Just put the biggest cooling you possibly can in the case, and limit the tdp in bios. Energy:perfomance is a heavily diminishing game anyway, so just undervolt it and put a cap on max powerdraw, you will only be losing very little performance.

I did. With the switch to full cloud experience, a mini pc will be plenty ressource for streaming.

Beelink is the correct answer for light to moderate loads. My friend (not smart) got some American copycat mini PC then bought 2 Blower fans to modify his for cooling (no 3d printer so he gets what he gets)...The reason I dont take the mini pill is I dont live in a car and appreciate the higher top end performance I dont use. But it's too narrow to put the TV stand on top of, too tall to sit under the front of the TV so you can still interact with it conveniently, and too bulky to stick to the back of the TV.
