Will this kill Windows and make Linux the most popular OS?
>>107830342NoIt will make SteamOS popular. Valve completely hides the fact that it's all Linux everywhere, it always calls it SteamOS. Battleeye and other bs anti cheats will partner with them and some games will only work on the limux-steamos-kernel or whatever with proprietary modules for anti cheat.Steam never cared about Linux, it just so happens they are required to share their shit. Why is proton a separate project and not upstream wine? Why is SteamOS still not available outside the deck?
>>107830342if you can just hit play and bing bong wahoo works without having to hack into the OS with 12969816 commands and green text scrolling by, then yes
>>107830362>Steam never cared about Linux, it just so happens they are required to share their shit.idk about that, they invested heavily in getting basically everything working, both open and closed source. the fact that you can use proton for non steam games is proof of that i think. that said, i do agree that its annoying you need to have steam installed. but wine isnt very intuitive on its own either.
>>107830342>Kill WindowsNo.>Make Linux the most popular OS?Not quite. Steam's influence is primarily in the gaming space, outside that, it doesn't have as much much pull. It will definitely help Linux advance as a viable option for gaming, but Linux has a long, long path ahead of it if the objective is to make it the most popular desktop OS overall.
>>107830362Correct. All successful UNIXes hide what they are as much as they can. See macOS. See Android.
>>107830442i feel like its like porn, if you can support games youll get more adoption outside of the field. realistically theres only a few pieces of software that linux is missing (mainly adobe and some cad stuff i think). i dont think theres anything else that its missing/ cant do
>>107830442if valve produces a widely used consumer linux, with a stable runtime, I wont be surprised if its used as the basis for a windows replacement , especially with all of the improvements to wine that proton has brought. people tend to forget that companies like hp ,dell used to ship unix workstations, and some linux pcs way back, but windows became dominant, if they can ditch microsoft and still maintain compatibility they probably would, especially since microsoft's reputation has been in decline for quite some time already. I can only imagine how many wasted resources have been spent by customer aupport , trying to help older people deal with changes that come with automatic windows upgrades.
>>107830496>especially with all of the improvements to winedid everything from proton get ported over to wine? im curious because the last time i used wine it was sooo crappy
>>107830362>>Steam never cared about Linux, it just so happens they are required to share their shit.Gaben worked for Microslop and in the beginning he liked how easy PC gaming was on Windows, but throughout the years they tried to break him (e.g. the Windows Store bullshit) you can see him want Steam untethered from MS's bullshit. One way to do this is just to make Linux usable enough for gaming, Proton is a side effect that benefits us all
>>107830506The question why is wine still not at the level where every .exe would run seamlessly on Linux since 1993?
>>107830506 wine's shittiest aspect is still the direct x support, but that can be fixed by simply instaling dxvk and vkd3d to your wine prefix. app compatibility is generally alot better these days, pretty well anythig that doesnt use a kernel driver will work.
>>107830543Can it do Photoshop and After Effects though? Adobe shituite is one reason a lot of people won't quit Windows. And then there's DAWs like FL Studio
>>107830342 I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
>>107830541not exactly, its more wondering why there isnt an alternative to proton, where you can just easily manage everything, rather than having to dive into wine configs and having everything still crash>>107830552>And then there's DAWs like FL Studionta but bitwig is at least native, not that anyone actually uses it
>>107830587Bitwig actually looks cool and not too expensive, might try it, ty
>>107830342No. The majority of Windows usage is in the corporation. Gaming and home usage is also a decent chunk but it's not enough to eclipse corpo shit.
>>107830342There's a long way to get there. Valve doesn't even distribute a version of SteamOS for generic hardware, only builds for specific devices. There's a good reason for that I'm sure, it's probably difficult to actually ensure support and functionality across so many different devices and drivers. The amount of work would be huge so they're probably just focusing on a few things to make sure what they're making actually works as well as it can.I wouldn't even be so sure that they actually want to be the ones offering something for generic hardware. Putting your name behind something means you need to support it and I'm not sure Valve actually wants to be accountable for desktop Linux working across such a wide variety of systems. I think they might prefer working on their own shit (Proton, DXVK, whatever) and releasing it so other distros can take it and offer the generic version instead.
>>107830804Valve will release a generic hardware version of SteamOS at some point which is why OP's post is in the future tense.
>>107830342How can AI generated images not consent?
>>107830342steamos is just arch with steam pre installed starting in big picture mode, nothing revolutionary
>>107830362>Why is SteamOS still not available outside the deck?because they would just get retarded gaymers crying shit doesnt work properly on their nvidia gpu
>>107830964>Valve will release a generic hardware version of SteamOS at some point>t. source my assIm betting they wont, it would just be a support nightmare without any benefits t. source my ass
Games? Yes. Productivity? No. Now stop recommending others to use GIMP instead of Photoshop.
>>107830432You don't need Steam installed to use Proton. You can use it through umu-launcher. Or you can use it manually if you're that way inclined, but it's far too much effort.
>>107830342No. The new G-sync Pulsar only works on Windows11 with Nvidia GPUs, there is also DLSS 4.5. Who the fuck would use the worse product?
>>107830362At least Valve doesn't incorrectly attribute the whole system as "Linux", if they just call it SteamOS.
>>107830342It will help make Linux more popular but to what degree, I dunno, probably not that much
>>107830362>it just so happens they are required to share their shit.Benefit of not having a BSD style cuck license
Kill yourself /v/ermin. You retarded gaymers are what is killing Linux
>>107830342Fuck no, people (including me) would rather use fucking mac for gaming and normal shit than ever use linux. Linux in it of itself is just an absolute failure now and the coming years will show either a complete entification of linux as a whole or most distros. All to do with the orgs that run them either shutting down because they have no money, being bought out by some other big tech company and turning to shit, or bought out and then shut down.
>>107831169What's wrong with GIMP?
>>107830552Photoshop is available web-based via WASM nowadays.No- not some limited functionality fisherprice toy; but (almost) the full thing.https://medium.com/@addyosmani/photoshop-is-now-on-the-web-38d70954365a
>>107830342No. Gaymers think they way more important than they are - the primary Windows customers are enterprises.
>>107831728This looks retarded and gay. Imagine being a KEK relying on WEB APPS
>>107830342Anti-Cheats won't magically work because Valve forked a Linux Distro, normies don't give a shit about their OS if it cannot run League or Valo.>>107830362>Battleeye and other bs anti cheats will partner with them and some games will only work on the limux-steamos-kernelThat's not how those things work, specially with people like EA, they keep spamming Steam discussions how Linux has more cheaters and when they disabled Linux support it was like they banned ~300k cheaters.>Why is proton a separate project and not upstream wine?Because Wine is shit, why would anyone partner with that?>Why is SteamOS still not available outside the deck?It is, literally go download it right now from steampowered, you can install it anywhere you want, fucktard.
>>107830342Why do people think an OS is just for vijeojames? Some people need to get their work done and some FOSS alternatives to production software are time wasting garbage. Windows won't die if this isn't tackled, because there's a good number of people that already would rather move away from the Apple ecosystem, and what's seen as a viable commercial alternative is Windows, no matter how shit it is as an operating system.
>>107831801Keep in mind the context here:You're already relying on Adobe apps in general...
>>107831728That looks like adobe acrobat. Not even on wangblows would people want this shit.
>>107830342It itself won't because gaming is a niche hobby. But there's a culmination of multiple things that will. Windows is a collapsing platform. Most governments are replacing Windows with Linux and sometimes Mac machines because of privacy concerns and the current hostility of the US towards most of the globe. Many corporations are doing the same. Corporate and government machines abandoning Windows will cost Microsoft billions over the next decade.China will be the first country to move away from Windows entirely. Not just the government but they're also forcing all local businesses to abandon Windows within the next 2 years. Personal devices will likely still be allowed to run Windows, but China is very quick to develop alternatives and spread them to their population. Deepin Linux already exists, while Harmony OS is also a decent consumer grade OS at the moment since most people don't actually need Windows-exclusive or Android-exclusive software. The platform is less than 8 years old and they've already created around 100k-300k applications for it. Not to mention that Deepin has access to Wine and Waydroid, while HarmonyOS also has multiple Android emulators. So there won't be a massive loss of platform exclusive software. As soon as businesses, schools and government offices switch away from Windows most of the regular citizens will quickly follow simply because it makes no sense using multiple different operating systems (people prefer consolidation).
>>107833720 cont:Russia will probably do something similar. Especially considering the US is fucking them over right now by removing Russian influence from various countries. The only problem with Russia is the fact that it's actually not a very rich country (they're also terrible at budgeting). So they're far less likely to completely wipe Windows in the next decade, compared to China which will definitely do it.Many places in EU and Australia have already ditched Windows entirely and retrained staff to use Linux. The EU has started to look into developing and funding open source software and pushing FOSS or EU software as a standard. Many schools, libraries and colleges are already using Linux in EU (mostly Ubuntu). And if you're a kid who is only exposed to Linux, you're more likely to prefer it when you're getting a computer of your own. Many prebuilt computers and laptops in EU already come with Ubuntu and this has been the case for at least a decade. So, Windows will possibly become a minor OS in the EU within the next 20-40 years, especially among younger generations. However, the US isn't treated as an entirely hostile force yet so the migration might be slower. The only thing that could truly "kill" Windows in the EU would either be Google with it's Android desktop OS (assuming the hardware it's on isn't as shit as Chromebooks were) and Apple (assuming Apple starts making budget laptops). The US will very likely be the last and only place where Windows still dominates in around 15-30 years.
>>107830342What i really don't get is why normies are so fixated on the idea of SteamOS when the improvements valve make work for just about every distro. Maybe it's the idea that the distro has a reliable backer, rather than some volunteer project like most?
>>107830342>Will this kill Windows and make Linux the most popular OS?Only if it can be a better platform for software than Windows is. A combination of OEM contracts and compatible productivity software put Windows on the map but gaming really solidified its ubiquity in the 90s. Today Valve is using gaming to put desktop Linux on the map and for it to succeed then what is needed? Productivity software and OEM contracts. Also GOG needs to bring their shit to Linux.
>>107833733Most people stick with established, mainstream brands they're aware of. Valve is a known entity in the gaming space, so gamers would primarily only go with SteamOS. "Ubuntu", "Fedora", "Bazzite", "Arch", "CachyOS" - these words are completely meaningless mumbo jumbo to these people and they're "literally nobody" brands. Most non-gamer normies would only use Linux if it comes with a label that says Google, Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi or Huawei. And it would need to be pre-installed on their device since less than 10% of people install an OS manually.
Anti cheats are security by obscurity. I'd rather put up with a few cheaters than deal with Windows 11.
>>107830342>>107830362NoIt will make Ubuntu popular. Canonical completely hides the fact that it's all Linux everywhere, it always calls it Ubuntu. Battleeye and other bs anti cheats will partner with them and some games will only work on the limux-ubuntu-kernel or whatever with proprietary modules for anti cheat.Canonical never cared about Linux, it just so happens they are required to share their shit. Why is snap a separate project and not upstream debian? Why is Ubuntu still not available outside their webpage?
>>107830342>Will this kill Windows and make Linux the most popular OS?That's just Kool-Aid.Business love windows because it just works, compatibility and it's great for sysadmins. And Users love Windows because of its compatibility. It takes far more than that to dethrone windows.Wahoo bing bing is not it. Only valve and Linux fanboys believe this.
>>107834159>It will make Ubuntu popular.SteamOS is arch based though..In any case, I'm glad linux got some attention, not because I want everyone to use linux > I don't care desu.. I've been on linux for over 20y and today it's a lot easier to install games than ever. I played age of empires 2 today on my debian 13. Sure was a lot easier than 5y ago.>>107830587>FL Studio / BitwigI had played around with Waveform which is linux native too, would love to see FL working. But even with a good DAW, you need synth/midi support. I have an arturia keystep and keylab but I can't configure them without windows or mac so fuck me
>>107833725>they're also terrible at budgetingThey're not terrible at budgeting, they're a corrupt mafia state and the leadership is exclusively interested in "budgeting" their pockets and the internal goons they use to make sure they remain in power.
>>107830342mogged by Cachy
>>107830342I hope so, then maybe some day I can finally find a worthy replacement for win7 and finally stop using it
>>107834687CachyOS is unusable
