Be honest, is COSMIC ready for gaming?
>>
>>107831927
Once it ships on Debian 15
>>
>>107831927
I hope so.
>>
>>107831927
I daily drive it and I do some light gaming (mostly emulated) without any issues.
>>
>>107832848
Last time i tried it I couldn't alt-tab out of games, is it fixed?
>>
>>107831927
I am gaming on it right now without a single problem. Even running OBS without any issues. I was more worried about OBS than gaming because of wayland, but I was surprised I didn't have to mod or change
anything.
The only issue I have so far is that they broke cosmic snapshop with the last update, which I know they will fix soon enough.
>>
>>107833127
*cosmic screenshot
i use it a lot, so breaking it wasn't a good thing
>>
>>107832880
Never had an issue like that personally
>>
It's a desktop environment
It runs your desktop
Your desktop doesn't have to be gaming ready
>>
Pop is pretty based. It IS the best plug n play distro out there.
>>
>>107833782
Even with cosmic?

Cosmic isn't terrible. It is still new. Everything still works just fine, but they will break something here and there along the way. The thing about Sys76 is that they are pretty fast about recognizing it and fixing it.
Besides you don't have to use cosmic or even wayland.
sudo apt install gnome -y
or
sudo apt install kde-full -y
and the reboot and log into gnome/x11 or kde...
takes less than 5 minutes if you really dont want to use cosmic
>>
>>107833878
how fucking stupid do you have to be to read "DON'T DO THIS" from the system, then do it anyway and then blame the system?
sheep like you should be hanged to death in public
>>
>>107831927
I installed it a couple of months ago, before official release, and had to go back
I had weird errors in two games, one of them was KCD I think, that prevented it from starting and it simply don't happen with Gnome.
I use Arch btw
>>
>>107833897
>the system asks you to break it or stop using steam with no alternative

and troons defend this
>>
>>107831927
COSMIC is functional for gaming on capable hardware but lags behind mature environments like KDE Plasma in gaming-specific optimizations, Wayland support stability, and peripheral integration. It's acceptable but not yet the best choice for a dedicated gaming setup.
>>
>>107833892
>doing all that to literally just use regular Ubuntu or Kubuntu
>>
>>107831927
I can't stand cosmic, but you can get kde up and running pretty easily on pop.

pop is good for steam games, osrs, emulators, even ffxiv. the problem with most "gaming" linux os like cachy/garuda/manjaro is that arch sucks dick. arch has issues with tons of commonplace gaming brands like corsair and steel series. "where did my headset go?" normal users will never tolerate this level of bullshit
>>
>>107835247
this is all true. i have distro hopped for years and Pop has been the only one I can literally install and start gaming with, without having to do much of anything other than picking a version of proton
>>
>>107831927
Just use gamescope in another virtual console.
>>
>>107833878
I don't understand what's happening here.
I'm a total linux noobie, and I was able to sudo pacman -S steam on an old laptop and have no problems. Why did it brick this guy's shit?
>>
>>107835515
He's a hack. LTT is one of the worst "tech" channels out there. Linus is incompetent and doesn't actually know what he's talking about, yet he has managed to get a massive following through a mixture of personality and a favorable YT algorithm at the time.
He was trying to force Pop to do something it wasn't meant to do - and Pop flat out told him not to do it, but he did it anyway and it crashed the system, he then goes on to blame Pop for what he did.
His audience, being mostly techlets who don't know the difference between ROM and RAM basically ignored the warnings the OS flat out gave him.
If you want to learn about linux from youtube there are far FAR better channels out there like Tech Hub for one example.
>>
>>107835453
even with cosmic?
>>
>>107835615
not same guy, im the "install kde instead". I've tried the new cosmic like 3? months ago, everything worked out of the box, but cosmic is just too "mac wannabe" and I didn't like mac ui to begin with

so tl;dr, yes with cosmic too.
>>
>>107835615
yeah so far so good. now they DID break the cosmic screenshot app, which i use pretty regularly, but they'll fix it. but other than that, no problems. i was worried OBS wouldn't work due to wayland (not cosmic), but even that works.
>>
>>107834473
>but lags behind mature environments like KDE Plasma in gaming-specific optimizations,
This, I'm running 24.04 as my daily and it feels incomplete.

>The settings window is missing half of the options of other desktop environments have. i.e No way to change cursor size or design without using the terminal.
>The other half of the settings with a GUI interface feels sparse and limited compared to any other environment.
>No way to re-arrange your applications in the app library, only folder groups in alphabetical order
>Too many applications don't show their proper icons on the dock or panel
>Cosmic files can show thumbnails when connected to a network drive
>When directly connected to a NAS drive, it wont use smb and defaults to afp
>Might not be cosmic, but network dives will just stop showing up in the network tab, but folders that are connected will still be there. I have to disconnect and reconnect to access a new root folder on my NAS drive.
>When full screening an application with solid colors, you can see parts of your wallpaper along the edges.

Cosmic needs 6 to 12 months before being fully ready imo
>>
>>107831927
Yeah im using popos on my legion laptop. Its the only distro where my fans dont run crazy loud for no reason. Only thing missing is blue light filter. Gayms works perfectly
>>
>>107835549
He actually had a broken package in the install it was just really bad timing, none of that was his fault. It was fixed immediately afterwards. If he did the same thing on a not-broken install this would have never happened.
It was not smart in the first place to try and install Steam like he did but with a non-broken package it would install normally and then possibly not work correctly. It might need dependencies it doesn't list, or you might need to configure something else manually before it works, or certain features won't work in the program. It wouldn't tear down the desktop environment and if you found out it was fucked you could safely remove it the same way you added it.

Where he went wrong is forcing it through when it very clearly explained what will happen and how bad it will be instead of stopping and reporting it.
>>
>>107831927
I sure hope so, I intend to get a new computer in 2027 and the OS I am going for is pop_os
>>
>>107831927
usecase for gaming ?
>>
>>107835935
and by his own arrogance and incompetence he convinced a million retarded normie NPCs that pop is some how bad.
there should be legal repercussions for this, not just for him, but to hold other incompetents accountable
>>
>>107836119
it games everything. i have over 500 games in my steam library, out of that 500 maybe 10 or 15 require me to use a specific version of proton (which less than 10 seconds to select) and out of that 500 maybe 4 don't work at all due to kernel level anti-cheats (which i just use my PS5 for). it runs every single emulator I have thrown at it with zero issues.
>>
>>107831927
the only problem that i'm facing with cosmic since the beta is that my games launch minimized when they use xwayland. probably could solve this by activating native wayland or using gamescope, but i haven't bothered.
>>
>>107835739
also agree with everything said.
