I don't think they're trying to "kill" it as much as they are terminally incompetent and also actively malicious in that they want you to buy their subscription shit rather than run normal programs on your PC.
It's no longer Microslop, it's Microprison with gamers forced to use it because of anti cheat and corporates forced to use it because of DRM.
