Since I have usually around 300 tabs open, vertical is only way to go.
Once you go vertical, you don't go back. Firefox lags a bit behind with them, but we have Zen now.

It made sense on paper but in practice it's actually less space for tabs I guess on paper it doesnt make sense too come to think of it, no shit there's less space vertically than horizontally. Vertical tabs COULD work if you could tab stack and if you had more customization in it's layout but no browser really offered that. Hell no browser ever had horizontal tab stacking, I had to use some janky Vivaldi css just to get that feature.

Vertical wastes more space when you have few tabs. But I keep mine collapsed most of the time, and if you have many tabs you can see more of them in full display.
