Picrel is retarded. I've since taken the hyperconverged homelab way: my desktop, workstation, media server, gitlab runner, home assistant, NAS, backup server, gaming rig, adguard dns server, etc... Is my 64 core machine with 128GB memory.
Just get something that is reliable.
>but you don't learn Proxmox
I yet have to see a Proxmox used at an actual company that isn't fewer than 10 people
>but you don't learn netwooorking
My work has more networking than anything I could fit in my home even without having a wife
>but power consoomption
Just get a modern processor, this thing with 2 NVMe and 10 3.5 HDD idles at 100W (I spin down hard drives like UnRAID, unified FS with MergerFS and offline parity with SnapRAID)

Everything on NixOS btw

It's a hobby, practicality is besides the point.

This. Literally all you need is a desktop for a server. You can even use a laptop since whatever you're doing likely doesn't get that much traffic.

Separate your desktop and server. Everything that you mentioned could run on a minipc or optiplex that costs less than $100.
>>
Using 64 cores and 128GB of memory to run video games and services that would work on a minipc shitbox is hardly deserving of a thread. If you're not going to pretend your consumerism is a form of autodidactism, I don't see the point of a 'homelab' at all.

No

A gitlab instance alone eats 8GB, and depending on what I'm building the runners will shoot up to 10GB each. I don't want my builds to swap to shit.

I currently have 25GB in resident memory usage with nothing actively running, you need at least 3 poorfag pcs to do the same, and limited by the network bw.
>>107888536
I do get traffic though, my emby routinely has 3 simultaneous 4k streams in the evening. Actual transcoding power is needed.

You're supposed to tell us you don't have a wife without telling us you don't have a wife.

I too have only one machine as a server, but having a bunch of small fries sounds fun,
More expensive? Probably
Less efficient? Maybe
Impractical? Yes
Dumb? Absolutely
Nevertheless, seems fun to play around with .
