Something about them seems to good to be true to me, but maybe i'm too schizo

It's for people who want to pretend that their ISP / VPN cannot see everything they do, when in reality you cannot hide from anything as soon as you connect to the internet.
Fun fact; FBI/CIA/Government can track you pixel perfect even without your PC/Phone.
>>

99% of your emails are of absolutely no interest to anyone including yourself.
It doesn't matter which email client you use as long as it works.
The government can get a warrant/subpoena to access your emails if they decide they want to. Not much you can do about it.

It's alright. A basic level of privacy, but if you really want privacy, don't connect to the internet or start making your own protocols, endpoints, keys, and devices.

Pretty much this. It's an online tiger-repelling rock.

While we're on the topic, are they the only VPN service that has a free tier? Are there any other free VPNs that are /g/ approved? I know there are extensions out there, but they can be a bit of a hotspot for malware.

hate to break it to you, OP, but they have collected evidence that you're a pedo and will use it to blackmail you at some point down the line.
>>107891018
>ISP / VPN
they have vastly different financial and legal incentives.
not every privacy concern is about the government tracking pedos.
>>107891043
there is no world government yet, so it does matter which country providers are based in.
>>
>>107890999
it's garbage.

gmail and google workspace are enterprise tier software. you couldn't run proton email for a 5 man company.
>>
>>107891069
>free VPNs
Using them is a full retard move and one of the biggest examples of "you are the product". Either pay for a real VPN or accept the fact that someone will use your actual IP to post 'p with sooner or later.
>>
What’s your use case
>>
>>107891087
it's not a free service. it's a limited free tier for a paid service.
people end up liking it and pay for it to get more speed.

>>107891104
I think he meant in general, not Proton specifically. Free VPNs tend to be shady and a bunch of them got called out for all kinds of data harvesting.
>>
>>107891098
Mainly their drive for backups and "proton pass" for password management, which are the things that seem sketchy to me

I don't use Proton but I do find "everything that claims to care about your privacy is actually a fed honeypot backdoor spyware botnet blah blah" posts to be extremely fucking suspicious. Can't think of a single privacy-related bit of software that hasn't been the target of tons of these types of posts. Feds trying to get people to give up or trying to herd people away from anything that works? Or just pseuds that think being extremely cynical and skeptical about everything inherently makes them smart?

I don't really trust them with my privacy that much more than the general competition, but as an alternative email provider, the amount of spam I've received is 0 for two years now, so I trust they're not just selling me off like some cheap whore. a free VPN for regional locks is a nice addition too, I have no need for anything else from their suite.
>>
>>107890999
free mail address without asking your phone number. good enough for me.

"wah this thing is bad because I lack the skills necessary to use it when shit like chatGPT can make it hand holdy enough."
>>
It's good for a free service. A bit weird with the sorting options, with notes and passwords mixed in but cannot complain. Still doesn't solve much. Still one password to attack and password managers do not have two factor auth so probs better and easier than targeting single accounts. Plus 5 eyes has videos of us all masturbating and thats worse than our passwords being leaked.

>The government can get a warrant/subpoena to access your emails if they decide they want to. Not much you can do about it.
-Thats why you always choose an email provider from a country you don't live in.
-Proton is really open about gov requests and publishes them, they can't read your emails, just the meta data, ipaddr and the recovery email account.
>Email security
Lol, lmao even. You shouldn't use email for illegal stuff anyways, how dumb is that? I just see Proton, especially the mail service as alt service to minimize snooping and AD ID farming from Ms, google and other popular "free" providers. At least your emails aren't scanned by AI to sell you shit and find out about all your registered accounts and interests. If they would break this principle, no one would use Proton anymore.
>>
>>107891018
Yeah thats with very specific wifi setups indoors for one person and relying on the person to not be aware etc. And it equates to a bag of air full of data. Pixel perfect? Creep.
>>
I made a Proton email so I could sign up for Runbox email. I need infinite aliases.
