Are space-based data centers really realistic?
>>107911262No.
>>107911262If there's anyone that can make it happen, it's Elon Musk.
>>107911262>launch your space-based data denter with spacex>have to keep paying spacex for any upgrades or repairsi wonder why spacex thinks this is a solid idea.also,>so much shit in orbit that some random trash or satellite hits your spade data center and causes it to burn up on re-entry
>>107911262No, because space isn't real, and if it was real then dissipating the heat would be very difficult compared to an air- or water-based environment.
>>107911331It's for when they go full mask off 1984 normal people can't reach these data centers.
>>107911267fpbpIn order to cool them, you need to exchange heat. Ask yourself what is in space that you can exchange heat with? There's nothing..>>107911281Sure, like his self driving car and his indestructible cybertruck that was gonna cost 35K
>>107911431just use the heat to power more data centres
>>107911262There are a lot of dumb ideas about AI but this is definitely the dumbest one.Even if you choose to forget that bleeding heat will be next to impossible, you still have to pay $2,000 per kg to put your GPUs in space. You'll also have to do that at minimum every few years as old cards become obsolete, and hire literal astronauts to maintain them. Elon would probably claim you can use Optimus robots for that, but they still can't even fold laundry unsupervised and each cost as much as a house to put into space.
>>107911262slopGPT claims>In the vacuum of space, the ~3 K cosmic background serves as an incredible passive heat sink. Servers can radiate heat directly into the void through blackbody radiation — no fans, no chillers, no massive evaporative cooling towers, and zero water consumption. This unlocks much higher compute density with dramatically lower operating costs.I wonder if this is true.
>>107911443Guess you could duct tape a bunch of stirling engines to the thing...
>>107911431You can radiate heat away, that's what the ISS does.
>>107911431It's a fun thought? How do dump the heat that they generate inside? But than you come up with " well half the machine is baking in the direct sun without any atmosphere" I think it's like 150c or some shit, not to sure.Interesting stuff
Even if they do build a data center or two there. I'm really interested in how would shit really be with the space junk.>Data center on earth, noise >Data center in space, flying pellets at 18k kmph
>heat exchange>radiation>obcelecence>maintainence>latency>the cost of getting it into space
>>107911542This is orders of magnitude slower and larger than normal water cooling.
>>107911262The real question is, will the NRO let him because it basically outs that we have the capability to "service" a satellite in orbit and that Musk has launched some of the birds that do it. "Service" can mean a whole host of different things.>We replace optics with better ones - service>We fuck with your recon satellite in orbit and it (((malfunctions))) - "service"
>>107911262>AI in Space
>>107911470>but they still can't even fold laundry unsupervisedThey can be controlled remotely. Besides in few weeks we will see optimus gen 3 that is apparently on another level.
>>107911488>I wonder if this is true.If only there was something that could be done about that, like thinking for yourself. I guess we'll never know the answer
Underwater data centers seem more viable. They use cylindrical containers that have been designed with high quality seals and a port for wiring. Once the equipment is inside, the whole thing is filled with an electrically inert fluid. While designed with fail over in mind, the equipment generally has a much lower failure rate due to being sealed in a controlled environment instead of dealing with all the contaminates common in human operated data centers on land. After about five years, the container is brought back up to land for the computer equipment to be refreshed and the container renewed. Underwater data centers are located in somewhat shallow water, which imparts minimal water pressure on the seals, but has enough flow and volume to act as an infinitely large heat sink. Challenges include destruction of connections by marine life and boats. Large scale data centers might also pose ecological issues by altering the food web and behavior of sea life.
>>107911488Radiators are massive cooling towers. Internal to the structure you still need all the pipes and shit to move heat to the radiators. AI is retarded.
>>107911262Of course they are. Musk took us to Mars, he can do this too.
>>107911831Where will he go now?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niZpcdp2v34
>>107912003this
>>107911850>in few weeks we will see optimus gen 3 that is apparently on another level.I have a bridge to sell you.
>>107911578>Inane yapping with no pointBrainfried.
Fuck space junk, its ruining the view of the night skynfor telescopes. Light pollution is bad enough, fuck planes and satellites for getting in the way even in rural areas.
Ignoring all the impracticalities, just WHY? I have yet to see anyone actually say why you would want a data centre in space instead of on the ground which has done perfectly fine so far.
>>107912490This stuff keeps improving massively every year, but you fucking retards are too dumb to notice anything besides that it's not perfect yet.
>>107912640Because in space you don't have regulations.
>>107912640Thermal dissipation, fool
>>107912593Good reason to put more telescopes in space.
>>107911262why? still dont see any use for ai. it's just some red herring everyone is chasing
>>107911262Musk is a fucking retard. Not only it's extremely expensive to send mass to space. It is also a real challenge to cool anything there, radiation cooling is pretty shit.
Slop for shareholders and investors. He needs to dream up new things for his rocket system that doesn't yet work to do, to get more money to finish it
>>107912815But the thermal dissipation of space is fucking garbage. It would make more sense to do some wireless energy gimmick where you send massive solar panels into space and then beam the energy back down to earth.
>>107911488>>I wonder if this is true. You'll never know because you're a retard who asks at chatbot to imitate thinking for you[Your only excuse for being this stupid is if you're underageb& and grew up with grifters telling you AI was useful
>>107911262>I fucking HATE space exploration and want to incite Kessler's syndrome as soon as possibleWhat's this retard's problem?
>>107911542If ISS was on Earth it would not need cooling because it does not generate almost any heat, unlike AI datacenter which chugs water for cooling like crazy, relative to how small space it occupies.
>>107911915Underwater datacenters improve cooling but don’t improve energy problem. Space datacenters improve energy but don’t improve anything else.
>>107911262No.>>107911331Forget all of this.Space based data centers don't solve any problem that a regular data center doesn't. It introduces a whole house of new problems though.
>>107911542radiators on the ISS are as big as its solar panels, all for a measly 100kW
>>107911262>Ctrl-f "kardashev">0 resultsI understand this isn't /sci/ but seriously guys, look up the kardashev scale and Dyson spheres, all the writing is on the wall that we need to ascend the kardashev scale before we wipe ourselves out. Which ultimately, in my opinion they create a silicon hybrid creature intelligence that takes over.Once you put all these pieces together, you realize humanity is a stopgap evolutionary trait to ascend the kardashev scale, because our organic beings are irrelevant as it ascends and the torch passes to the next form of evolutionary life
>>107918039>/sci/>doesnt know anything about psychologythis kinda sucks because psychology is also a science>our organic beings are irrelevant as it ascends and the torch passes to the next form of evolutionary lifethats not gonna happen, because of something called survival instinct
>>107911262No lol
>>107918086and then we get wiped out and earth tries again. psychology has no place here besides "does this person's actions and intentions help ascend the kardashev scale". you're thinking in terms that humanity actually matters and/or has longevity.do you actually think "survival instinct" matters in the face of ELE's, which is basically the big picture?we either ascend the scale, or diewe're basically an electron trying to ascend states, as a planet
>>107918039You're a literal retard who doesn't understand the great filter.
>>107918225>you're thinking in terms that humanity actually matters and/or has longevity.nope.im talking about the most fundamental elements of animal psyche. not only in humans.we will never allow anything supercede us because thats how were hardwiredalso chill out with the redditspacing if you will, it hurts my eyes
