bros, what are your opinions on these devices? are they feasible to vibe code using a remote ssh instance? i like my macbook and such, but I want a low-distraction environment, and a thinkpad with xmonad is bulky to carry around.are there alternatives to this weird uconsole thing? also youtube suggests that this thing is mostly for "pentester" types (i.e. unemployed flipper zero philes) - is this fr?also wtf is with captcha now lol
>>107917652I'm making a startup that will make better ones.
>>107917652They only count if you build them yourself.
buy an ad nigger
>>107917678I just thought about it, any suggestions on keyboards? I want my shit to be handheld. I could totally make a case for a raspberry pi.>>107917691you either filled out that captcha for a dumb comment or you pay for 4chan. either way a faggot.
>>107917700A lot of people use the mobile BT handheld keyboards with trackpads on them for like TVs and stuff. They either tear them down and incorporate it into their enclosure or just crudely attach it. I'd love for someone to make a standard fullsize keyboard with regular keycaps but at like 20% the normal size or whatever.
>>107917730Imagine how shitty the normal mechanical keyboard would be if it's shrunk down lmaoI'd prefer something I can thumb-type on desu
>>107917652open a fullscreen terminal, there's your low distraction environment
>>107917797I don't think it would be shitty, but it doesn't even need to be mechanical, I'd take a membrane.
>>107917678Yo that's dope as fuck.
>>107917652>cyberdeckstranny-coded memeyou will literally never ever use it for anything except shooting a shitty jewtube video about them
>>107917802yuck, I am too addicted to youtube and other crap. my current setup is desktop pc playing content while I work in the background on my laptop... I want a device thats heavily dedicated to engineering>>107917816any suggestions for a good membrane keyboard I can get if i decided to build one myself?
>>107918113It doesn't matter what you use tech for, as long as you had a good time while you used it.
>>107918114Like I said in another post a lot of people use the Rii keyboards. Honestly, I'm thinking about getting that new HP PC in a keyboard and adding a giant battery and armstraps to it to make it a dope cyberdeck.
>>107917652If you want to know the utility of something, you should look how it's presented in its advertising and in shill threads. Every single photo of these handheld miniature computers is them running a command line text editor, htop, displaying ASCII art, or and idle IRC client, with absolutely nothing else going on.Because they are useless toys.
>>107918142They are pi's so they are capable of doing anything a pi is which is basically linux hence why you see that stuff.
>>107918170It's like you didn't even read my post.
>>107918176I did read your post though. There's plenty of videos and pictures showing shit like emulation and other shit pi's do. It's not just terminals and ascii art. If you're trying to complain about something else maybe elaborate more and don't poorly write a post in the first place.
>>107918191You're once again establishing that you didn't fully read what I posted or you're missing the entire point. Let's try this. Steelman my post, even if you don't agree with it.
>>107918142In 2012 (and then again in 2019) I tried coding on an ipad... that shit was disgusting. Today we have a paradigm shift with codex/claude code/ollama instance - I feel like this would explosively improve utility of these smaller devices in combination with beefy remote machines.Or am I wrong? And how different would the experience be vs a computer with a small screen (sub 13 inch) + a tiling window manager? For situations where you want to quickly troubleshoot a server that's down and/or prototype small-to-medium scale software.
>>107918196Are you legitimately retarded or just being ignorant? Because as a third party reading the replies I don't see any confusion on that anons behalf.
>>107918199I didn't read your post because you started off with an acedote, which means you missed the point of the post.
>>107918208OK, so I'm just going to assume that you didn't understand the point of the post, which was that the point of an advertisement is to show maximum utility to the consumer. And all the threads that are made about these items and how they're depicted on the websites and in the news articles that they're featured show them running useless performance monitors, text editors with nothing open and other such useless garbage like ASCII art. It's reasonable to make a generalization from featured content that shows no utility and the fact that you've never seen a person ever use these in any public or private setting, And that the YouTube videos and blog posts about these items are so far and few - AND that they are constantly being churned out cheaply in different iterations that they are useless.
>>107918221>the point of an advertisement is to show maximum utility to the consumerIn the current day and age? No it's not lol. Also the idea of the uconsole which is basically out of stock 24/7 being advertised is hilarious. God forbid anons discuss products without dipshits coming into threads screaming about ads and consooming.
>>107918253For computing devices, it absolutely is. The rest of your post is irrelevant.
>>107918258Oh yeah I love those samsung and apple commercials that have the phone in a black room and light glaring off the edges. It really showcases the maximum utility to the consumer!
>>107918280Those advertisements are for products where the utility is already established. These are a new class of products which: A, never caught on and B, are being marketed to an extremely niche audience. The point of my original post was that these advertisements, blog posts, YouTube videos, etc. are showing the utility of the device, which they must do to appeal to the very small consumer base. And the utility is running these stupid useless command line applications. I was using colloquial language which you either didn't understand or are purposely being obtuse and sidestepping just to have an argument.
>>107917652Overpriced shit all we need is smartphone without google shit.Keyboard is good on this one but screen to little or it's screen normal, keyboard too small. They should try to implement something like the Nintendo DS
>>107918293https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bvfs4ai5XUYeah, this really shows the utility of the product! You sound like a retarded faggot anon.
>>107918311Yeah, you're right. Phones never existed before the iPhone.
how are you supposed to get reasonably fast connection on anything like this? like why cant they build one with 1gbit capable wifi card
>>107918313Okay so the raspberry pi (and computers) existed before the uconsole. You're now talking against your own logic.Holy retard.
>>107918315It has LTE but it's limited to 4G but it also has wifi so your phone as a hotspot is more than capable of giving it a solid connection. Personally I think the device looks cooler than it's actual usefulness as most pi based things do.
>>107918325I know that you're very angry, and you just want to argue, but I'm not going to respond further, but I'll leave you with this. Raspberry Pi's and computers in general were not inherently small, highly portable, lightweight, and generally cheap. As I stated before, this is a new class of device. I'm glad you accept the fact that the iPhone was not a new class of device. You can continue arguing, but you have no point. If you actually had a legitimate use case for these, you would have posted it by now, and you would own one. Which you don't. You are the only person in this exchange who's using visceral, emotionally charged language and insults, while I'm commenting in well-reasoned neutral language. That should tell you something about your position. Have a good day.
>>107918343No one is angry you're just being obtuse. Pis have been portable and small since they've come out, it's literally their whole point. The pi zero launched in fucking 2015 it's over a decade old lol.
>>107918343"have a good day" in that tone is emotionally charged. you seen if not mad at least peeved or bothered, maybe a touch of self important and defensive. i agree with you though the whole "maker" market is a scam, at least in the context of these electronics. you really CAN make stuff with the boards though and the software out there and all the hardware products really do make it easier. it's just that it cancels itself out. it doesnt really need to be easier but all the momentum behind certain platforms and architectures is really self sustaining so it doesnt matter as much that the money comes from repackaging chinese pcbs.i havent really looked into it for example but i think circuitpython probably split the community or possible community that might have been writing micropython. adafruit wants its nicely packaged toys and so it needs its own platform in every way. like the apple of sbcs.
>>107918343NTA but I've been using devices and building devices like the one in OP for over 15 years. I used to use moonlight on an ancient tablet with a BT kb to remote into my bpc for shit like WoW and stuff while working I have to agree with him that you're just trying to ignore common things.
>>107918407no raspberry pi product can even suspend to ram"small" and "portable" are not the same thingfuck off with your "portable" lies
>>107918430? You literally just attach them to a battery dude. A pi 4 lasts like 15 hours on a 10k power bank.
>>107918313https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErwS24cBZPcAnd your excuse for this one?
>>107918468Oh boy, lots of information about the utility of this machine!
ok i just thought about it and realized what i really want in a handheld programming device is one of those gesture capable keyboard+touchpad combos. not only would you have swipe typing like a phone keyboard, but with the right software (neovim and emacs) the dictionary could be integrated with your active LSP. also you could have custom swipe gestures as editor commands, like vim motions or evil motions in emacs. emacs could even do a lot with different gesture maps for different modes and shit. could be big.
I want one too, but others are correct it's just a toy for the most part. You really can accomplish this with your android by using Termux.
>>107918468That commercial is even more eerie today
I like this one but too expensive for very low CPU for my taste. Wish phones will go to this direction
>>107918045Is it? It's a printed box for a keyboard and a trackpad with gay lights.
>>107918840I bet wingpd could make something like this with a decent CPU if they wanted to.
>>107918884While I'll admit it's not as cool as my initial design for it was (I original was going to have the trackpad shoot out the side on a rail and had it that way til the very last revision) it's a bit more than what you're implying. I took a framework SBC and designed a custom enclosure for it that also had a separate enclosure for it's battery on top of it. I made sure the USB-c ports still are properly in line with the outer shell as well. I had to solder the rocker switch directly to the MB which was a small pain in the ass as well. Then I added a bunch of USB stuff internally to make it a solid powerhouse brick of my needs. There's a hub on the back, usb fans on the side that exhaust the hot air, and a 26k powerbank under the keyboard riser with a grommet outlet for the cable to allow self plug in for recharging. The entire case was my first experience doing CAD doing caliper measurements for shit (like the keyboard tray + incline to be flat) and the LEDs are also custom soldered to fit (you can see copper on the left connecting a strip over a grommet) and the final product is a headless unit that's powerful enough to do a lot of things I need that you need my Viture glasses to use. There's probably more complex cyberdecks and such out there but I'm proud and happy with mine, I would love to see yours.
>>107918921Probably, and it will be way more expensive. But what else is new with tech these days.
wouldn't know what to do whit this but it looks cool
>>107919039I'm honestly fine with paying the tax on items like that if they fill my needs and aren't useless.

>>107918840Yeah, but can it run Linux???
Look, it's another useless gadget thread> OP posts something so extremely niche, even kickstarter projects fail to reach their initial goal> "why is this not more popular"because you're an autist with OCD and fail to see the bigger picture in your extremely niche obsession. Things don't become more popular when they exhibit traits that *make them unpopular*.> but why isstop coming here, nobody wants to deal with your childish bullshit

As long as the price is fucking more expensive than an actual real pc, you can keep that shit.
>>107917678not really no. cyberdeck is merely a placeholder for any unnamed portable form factor. cyberdeck does not inherantly mean DIY.>>107917730>>107918139>>107919639>bluetoothyou sicken me

>>107917652i have one of these with the riscv processor and LTE expansion. it's okay. the factory OS is dogshit but it's not hard to rip out the first couple partitions and then replace the root filesystem with one you build yourself. i put together an LFS system with musl and so on and added a framebuffer-based terminal emulator and that in and of itself made the device 9999999x more useful, even if only as a portable ssh console. links2 is comfy on it as well as finch for IM shit. i can run irc, xmpp, and whatever else on one tty, links on another, ssh into my server on a third, play a MUD or something on a fourth, play back music on a fifth, and so on. >>107923600you're totally right about the software though. i'm super fucking pissed that they refuse to release their kernel source for the allwinner, and that they never upstreamed it. all my shit can run on riscv already, and i like the cheap shitty hardware. even without low-power states or suspension, i can get a good six, seven, even eight hours at a time off it. i just want to be able to fuck around with the kernel...
at this point i would rather just get a steamdeck
>>107917652cyberdecks as a concept is great. the key is that we need a network that can only be accessed via these kinds of devices. the hardware acts as a token of some kind proving a real identity, solving the bot issue and obviously the barrier of entry gets rid of retards.everyone complains about the internet being ass (correct) but no one wants to use a good alternative. That's because no one has built an actually good alternative yet. Opportunity knocks, niggas.
