Chat rooms used to be so common in the 90s and early 2000s. What happened to them?
>>107919236social media
>>107919236It's called Discord now retard.
>Hey boys check out my onlyfans>Hey boys check out my cam site>Hey boys wanna chat with me?>etc. etc. etc. etc.Spam killed the chatroom, and modern-day internet users will defend these fucking whores as "sex workers" and not "Jack's to-do list".
Discord replaced them. It's literally IRC with avatars
>>107919293>>107919545discord is full of fags though
>>107919236Yeah I remember voilĂ /wanadoo chat in France. You could just hop in and speak with thousands people around year 2000.People left to chat in wow, facebook etc.+Shady stuff was going on (illegal files transferts, grooming, scam..) and the providers have already a lot of others thing to do. They don't want risking a lawsuit or waste time handling chatters asking for help. Chatrooms were just a cool bonus, not their revenue source.
>>107919660By provider I mean "internet providers". They were selling internet access and chatrooms were a little bonus in their main page. Also, people used mIrc more and more instead of the webchat so they couldn't serve ads, maybe also a factor.
>>107919545discord is mostly used by artists nowadays to hide their porn collections from scrapers like kemono. it's frustrating as fuck to use discord because you can join any server with a link, but need to be granted permission to message anyone or comment anything, which makes it useless as a platform for connecting with creators.that's not to say anything about their use of spyware AI, censorship, or the fact that every discord thread has some faggy dictatorial moderator in it because users can't be trusted not to flood the board with CSAM and get it shut down.we never had this issue back when we had niche hobby forums.
Destroyed by automated spam
>>107919683>CSAM?
>>107919693Cheese pizza
>>107919605So were those chatrooms.>Source: (You)
>>107919236You can always try www.tincanapp.orgLiterally just use a throw away email to verify and startup your own servers, keep it public, and invite friends and that's basically what it is
>>107919605>modern IRC is full of faggotsshocker, just like it was 2 decades ago
>app is called "discord">the most controlled and surveillanced chat app in existence
>>107920068not really. discord is full of actual homos
>>107919236https://netsplit.de/networks/top100.php
>>107919683>dictatorial moderator>niche hobby forumsWent together like ham and cheese
Extreme fragmentation. Discord, Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal... list goes on. The sea of information on the web enables human specialization, so, the fragmentation intensifies. why do you need a chat about 10cm wide fork springs? and how do you persuade the retard who owns it, that it belongs to a wider group that is non existent?>>107919305yes yes, those booba is very scary (not)
I remember learning how to use IRC via a command line tool, visiting random rooms, and having fun just lurking watching people talk. It was especially interesting to be in one where file sharing was allowed and exploring what was there. I'm sure I could get that same experience in any random discord but I dont get that same sekrit club feeling, everything just feels too easy and un-earned.
>>107919236What about discord? It's basically centralized IRC with ads.
irc still exists and zoomers dont use it so theres more genuine conversation
>>107919545Discord is IRC for incels. Also embedded images
I (2001 zoomer) used to be addicted to Xat chatrooms, you know the ones you could embed into websites? I would talk with people on there for hours, even convinced my dad once to get me a $20 gift card to buy some bullshit emoticons or whatever on it. I miss when that was popular, it was a lot of fun. But now every website has a discord so you can't join those chat rooms. Despite being more fragmented the internet felt more social back then (the 2000s). I fear we'll never go back, at least not on the clearnet
>>107924155everybody knows what IRC is.. not about chats really, because chats assume you carry on something, some memories, some history
>>107919236it vibe creates anxiety in zoomers, you need everything to be more retarded and faggy for them
>>107919236I miss yahoo chat, I'd cyber so much poon it's unbelievable. I had the best pickup line - "a/s/l?"
>>107927414Dude yahoo chat was the best way to get laid back in the 90s.
