But what happens when you're not paying attention and you download something that was encoded with a shitty old encoder like xing? Even if the source material was perfect it's not going to sound as you expect it to. If you make your own encodes from files you know are legit you can ensure the right encoder gets used and the source material is good. That eliminates all this doubt. For more obscure music soulseek doesn't always give you this option though. A lot of things that are in FLAC on RED/OPS are either in locked shares and only shared publicly as mp3s (which are probably good enough, but you should check) or just not on there as FLAC at all.
