>>107983820Most popular distros already have very simple setups though, no? All it asked me for mine was language, region, username, and I think partitioning settings. Maybe 2-3 minutes total
>>107983859The partitioning part is where things can go wrong. Without proper knowledge many people can end up formatting their whole drive and irrevocably deleting all their files. That would leave a sour first impression.
>>107983380>normies use windows because it came by default on their prebuilt (and replacing it sounds like sorcery to them)>prebuilts have windows installed by default because it's what normies use
>>107983898I wiped my whole SSD but I had a warning from both the site and the setup process itself that it would do so, so I already knew beforehand to back shit up.
>>107983416Most of these things will be fixed when they finally switch to Wayland. Debian 13 stable already did, that's how you know Mint is falling behind kek
>>107983380People drive to the store to buy a new PC to replace their old Windows 10 computer and they see no Linux Mint PCs, no Fedora PCs, no Ubuntu PCs, no Bazzite PCs, no Manjaro PCs. Everything is either Windows 11, macOS and ChromeOS, and they get one of those, become comfortable with it and stick with it for the duration of their computer's life.

>>107983380DO most people in the general public outside the tech scene even know Linux exists?
>>107983966The day linux is provided in public schools as the os to use is the day it will get wider adoption. But there isn't lobbying done for this on behalf of companies scoring huge government contracts. It will never happen. We had macs for classes with photoshop and windows for my solid works class in high school. You aren't going to see gimp and freecad in schools.
>>107983997They don't sell in retail stores where most people usually go to buy PCs. They don't even sell their computers at Micro Center. You have to buy them from their website, and to do that, you have to know their website even exists in the first place.
>>107983997This brand doesn't exist in normal stores. Any store you go into only has Windows PCs or PCs without an OS. And people are always told to get a Windows PC because they won't know how to install an OS.>>107984003Some do now due to SteamOS. But most don't. They only know PC=Windows and phone=Android or iOS.
>>107984011no gimp and freecad? actual uysefull industry software instead? on efficient apple silicon? the horror

>>107984011>But there isn't lobbying done for this on behalf of companies scoring huge government contracts. It will never happen. It's already happening outside of the US. China, Russia and EU are all looking into replacing Windows and Linux is the current popular choice. China even effectively banned Windows from being used in businesses and schools. EU is slowly de-Americanizing and they're looking to replace Windows with Ubuntu.
>>107984040Solid works isn't exactly industry. Industry is catia. Solid works is babby software for tiny firms.
>>107984040Why the fuck would any grade twelve or under need more? Fuck, even MS Paint would be good enuff. Reminder that the music maker where I grew up was garage band
>>107984080I took a graphic design class in hs and we used illustrator for vector graphics and photoshop for raster. Solid works was a 3d drafting course and we had access to a cnc router, a plasma cutter, and a laser engraver. I'm 33 and 3d printing wasn't a big thing yet.
>>107984069well yeah but you gotta agree gimp is unacceptable shit. companies develop industry level paid software. people pay and expectfor free you can have your foss shit
>>107984110My point is that something like freeCAD would work for that. You aren't doing work for Lockheed Martin, you are doing first year college-level work at best. It's not that serious. Even Krita has photoshop covered
I really like Linux, but after 21 years of using it and showing my concerns that word-of-mouth advertising in obscure IRC chat rooms and Compiz effects are probably not enough to make the year of the Linux desktop happen, a lot of the Linux community still doesn't seem to have learned. They still believe the year of the Linux desktop can come spontaneously, just add the spinning cube to your desktop and the masses will come to it.I can walk through an entire Best Buy or Micro Center or Costco without seeing a non-Chromebook Linux PC. That's gotta change.
>>107984130No it definitely is. But reaper is good. Adobes liscensing practices make it horrible. Honestly though they should have mac os computers for videography, graphic design, etc, windows for just office, and linux for computer networking, programming/scripting, and general computer literacy. That all said you'd have to be a gorilla nigger retard to send your child to public school anymore and you really ought to do a homeschool co-op or at least a modified montessori private school. Home school co-ops are the way to go. Your kids won't have to associate with **those** people or be raised by a low iq state stooge. They'll only be associating with other kids with parents that actually love them.
>>107984041>why doesn't government do right

>>107984219Do you mean age 6-12 or 6th - 12th grade? I was making furniture with the cnc router of my public high school in 11th grade.
>>107984208Most people rarely use an operating system that didn't come with their PC. If the average person wants to ditch Windows, they'll probably buy a Mac and be done with it because that was the prime alternative that was presented to them when they went to buy a new computer. Linux's success will not happen spontaneously.
>>107983380Linux is not replacement for Windows.Specially for normies... average normie won't be running VM to have photoshop or any adobe shit.I love mint but it's far from anything optimal for normies.
>>107984264Does the average normie even know Linux Mint exists to begin with?
>>107984263Most people don't actually even use a computer outside of work. I talk to people constantly that own a phone and a video game console only. The people who do own a personal computer themselves are the ones who would be willing to abandon windows. IE gaymers. Mac is fine if you do photography or really want logic for your beep boop music. Windows has just been actively making life worse for years.
>>107984003>DO most people in the general public outside the tech scene even know Linux exists?Nope. I work in a huge electronics store and sell computers everyday. Everyone knows windows, everyone knows mac, some knows chromebooks but that's it. If we brought in a stock of pc's with linux installed it wouldn't sell at all. Nobody wants to buy the unknown.
I think the best solution is for these distros' devs to start putting ads out for their OS
>>107983997>>107984021>>107984024I never understood why System76 won't sell their computers in stores. There's such a massive opportunity right now as dissatisfaction with Windows 11 is at an all-time high and other people are looking to buy a new PC to replace their Windows 10 PCs that can't be upgraded to Windows 11.
>>107984309Similar experience for me working as a computer repair man. Many old laptops and desktops could have been salvageable with a Linix distro but there's no point even mentioning it to customers. >linux, what the hell is that? >>107984288this is true too... yeah.
>>107983380I'm waiting for either Affinity or Photoshop to come to Linux. GIMP is alright for hobbyist projects but it's no replacement for professional work. There are reports saying that Canva is seriously considering porting the new Affinity to Linux so fingers crossed.
>>107984353MS might have an exclusive deal with most stores, and system76 is probably too poor to outbid a multitrillion dollar company.
>>107984411The biggest issue isn't really what capabilities Linux-built software has but the fact that companies will force you at gunpoint to use the same software as everybody else. Some people say they just use VM or layers but I would never risk that myself

>>107983380Because Linux is still too intimidating on account of gatekeeping autists and the over 9000 distros to choose from. If you want more people to use GNU/Linux systems, promote Ubuntu. It's beginner/normie friendly and is maintained actively by a legitimate tech company (not a collective of neckbeards and trannies tinkering away on a hobby thing). You need to give them a 'trustworthy' and professional and 'legitimate' avenue to get into Linux, Canonical provides that. The only way Linux can have any real sustained and legitimate growth is through centralisation. You may not like to hear that but it's true. Computers themselves didn't take off until they were centralised by Microsoft systems. Linux won't take off until it is centralised by Canonical.

Speaking as a Linux (TM) user since 2004:There's a million Linux versions and they are all the same shitInstalling even the simplest Linux version is a 1990s themed nightmare The whole partitioning crap has to be automatic Bugs everywhereUgly and cheap lookingBasic office software buggedAdvanced technical and hobby software unavailable Broken on updates Still relying on command line for graphical interfaces in 2026All of it to save a hundred dollars on a windows license or whatever or two hundred on a second hand macbook I don't care since I only use computers as command line tools for database purposes But to the average user a Linux computer is not a computer in the modern senseHow to fix it: Pay a bunch of troons to create a GUI that works, drop all the freetroon libre shit and port critical office and hobby software until it works out of the box all of the time Until then buy a Mac for any complex computing
>>107987863>Installing even the simplest Linux version is a 1990s themed nightmareIn my humble opinion as someone who thinks most distros are awful, I thought installation for Ubuntu wasn't that bad. Just plug a USB and follow the instructions on a graphical interface.
>>107983380As a desktop, Linux offers me nothing that Windows cannot also do, and when it comes to software and hardware support, significantly less. Also if I want to develop something specifically for Linux, I have WSL2 with all the benefits and none of the downsides; specifically hardware support and a horrible gui (gnome or KDE).
>>107987863>The whole partitioning crap has to be automaticIt already is. I can't remember when was the last time I did any manual partitioning. Probably over 10 years ago. You just select a drive and click "next".>Ugly and cheap lookingThis is debatable. It's not like Windows 10 didn't look like some shitty UI project some random child made in Paint. Plasma 6 and GNOME 40 look much better than it. Even macOS was ugly for most of it's lifespan despite what Applefags claim.>Broken on updates Not an issue in immutable distros. SteamOS, Silverblue and Bazzite never broke for me.>Basic office software buggedCan't say I care. I haven't used this software extensively every since I got employed. And it's not like Microsoft Office was ever any better. I remember it being dogshit, slow and buggy back when I used it.Besides, WPS, Google Docs and OnlyOffice are perfectly fine. If anything most schools and businesses have jumped to Google Docs which is a browser app.>Advanced technical and hobby software unavailable You can say this about any platform.>Still relying on command line for graphical interfaces in 2026False. The only command I ever typed into my non-work computers is a single line related to setting up my very specific VPN. That's the entirety of my bash_history, just 1 line. You never need to use the CLI unless you're an advanced user who would use a CLI anyway. So this is a non-complaint.>Speaking as a Linux (TM) user since 2004Honestly it sounds like you're still stuck there and haven't realized how good Linux got in the past 5 years alone. It is a noticeably better experience than Windows 10/11.
