Old, compatible programs like MS office or photoshop still work and absolutely mog linux alternatives. There are plenty of up to date browsers like lun3r, thorium or r3dfox (if you prefer Windows 7). You can run plenty of new programs with one core api or vxkex. There is no need to update to the new version unless you need some specific feature your current one doesn't have.
