this single dev only has experience with CRUD in PHP. multiplayer would be through steamworks and all hit detection would be client side.

dead genre

With engine a year if you know C# or C++ and can make your assets.

Without engine a 3-5 years a good foundation of C++ needed. Would be helpful a small community to help you test your engine because it will be hell and later to test your game. Physics assuming you don't want it to do it at your own because that would extended a process to 8 years.

>hit detection would be client side.
You're too stupid to make a game, don't bother trying
>>
>>107994677
it wouldn't be a clone of dead games, it would change things up.
>>107994680
the only people who should be making game engines are people who program for a living. your answer gives me hope.
>>107994683
what is wrong with client side hit detection for an indie game? straftat's hit detection is client side and it has a decent population for an indie game. there are cheaters of course,, but because there is no ranked you can just block them and leave.

Do it OP bring back QIII.

Yes.
If you are really serious with 3D engine which is really hard to pull off and make something good then i would tell you to start smaller do few 2D ones first and then try 3D. Specially managing bigger project like engine can be problematic but you can do it.

Probably like 5 years, about 10% probability you actually get to something enjoyable.
If you have to ask, realistically it goes down to 10 years and 2%.
If you have to ask AND you want it to be good, 10 years and 0.05%

Pick an engine and make some 2d shit then try 3d shit. Even then you're several years out and that's if you don't suck start a shotgun before hand. Also, client side hit detection? Server side checks?
>>
>>107994664
Enjoy your cheaters
>>
>>107994677
It's not, there just isn't enough content, every developer bends their knee and ruins their franchise catering to BR zoomies, because that's where the money is at, not because there's no people wanting to play something else.

Both wrong.
Xonotic is a very nice open source arena shooter. No need for anything else
>>
>>107995075
>No need for anything else
Well duh, the genre's not popular enough to warrant anything else.
>>
>>107995112
Nice strawman.
>>
>>107995075
Content amount and quality though.

>>107995112
It's not profitable enough to warrant investing.
Games usually focus on one aspect, the most profitable one. There's limited money and developers to invest in by shareholders who sit at the top of the studios and publishers.
>>
>>107994891
oh so it's on it's death knell phase just like when rts's started catering to moba esports?
>>
MIKEEUUUUUSSSSSAAAAA already perfected the genre.
>>
>>107994664
Technically any normie can do this in 2026 as everything is prefab and automated already, but it would be garbage because there's no talent or vision involved.
