Anyone have a router with the 6GHz band? Thoughts?
no, because there are no stable foss implementations of wifi 6 ghz
>>108002191I have a TP-Link Archer with Wi-Fi 7. It's good for my home server and connections are more stable compared to before, makes barely any difference for anything else.
friend picked up this one. definitely faster wifi.

Recommendations for routers with good openWRT support with a ~100$ budget?
wi-fi is still absolute dogshit and nothing will ever beat wired connections
>>108002427off-topic not tri-band 6ghz
>>108005329i agree, but i got tired of dragging an ethernet cable around the house.
>>108002819>It's good, no one else around me has 6ghz.SameI can hit over 2.4Gbps in real world speedtests over wifi using 320Mhz wide channels.
>>108005413You have to be 6 inches away from the router though
>>108005329Wi-Fi 7 has higher max speeds than CAT8 Ethernet cables, and (theoretically) lower latency due to the lower refractive index of air.
>>108002191I have an Asus router with Wifi 7 capabilities. Theoretically Wifi 7 is supposed to better than previous versions because of the inclusion of 6 GHz and MLO but the implementation, client side is still quite lacking. Also, if you live in the EU, the upper half of the 6 GHz spectrum (from 6425 to 7125 MHz) is not allowed for private residential use, so you're forced to use the bottom half. That wouldn't be a problem, but some devices don't play well with lower end channels of the 6 GHz. I had to tinker quite a bit with 6 GHz channels to get a steady and reliable connection with all of the devices. MLO implementation, on the other hand, is an absolute mess. There are multiple standards and currently there are no client devices that actually support the "hallmark" feature of Wifi 7 (simultaneous connection to multiple wifi bands). What you have instead is band switching which doesn't always choose the right wifi band for the given situation. Hopefully in a year or two they'll iron things out.
>>108006189Yes, Wifi7 is a mess. Meanwhile they're already showing off Wifi8 devices.
>>108005463Nope, within the same room though.I've gotten over 2Gbps from 10+ feet from the router, and 1.2-1.7Gbps from the surrounding rooms.
>>108005498>(theoretically)
>>108002819>>108006341Same. Awesome to copy files over WiFi on between my filserver and laptop without the need for ethernet.
>>108008770Depends on the hardware in practice
>>108005498>>108008770>>108010062CAT8 isn't real anyway. No CAT8 NIC has ever been manufactured or sold anywhere.
>>108002819I have that and never got any 6ghz client to connect kekMLO also doesn't exist in openwrt yet, and the thing still has issues with the 10g phy going poof every once in a while.Hope I can actually use the thing sometime within this year.
>>108011712Weird
>>108011712you need to follow snapshots and stop on one that works. I don't have any wifi7 devices to test with, so mlo means nothing to me. I do have solid 10g. It's not ready for general use, but it does everything I need. I wish the gps chip worked though. I'd like to use it as an ntp server.
>>108011712>>108012283I've been using a months old snapshot where the 10g was just made working and it's been fine for that entire time.Much better than my ubiquiti APHaven't bothered with the new ones as I'll have to take it down from the wall to initially set up as an AP again as new snapshots set specific wan/lan ports.
I'm on an RT-BE88U which has wifi7 but no 6ghz band. I only got it because it had a 10gbit sfp+ and multiple 2.5gbit lan ports. I don't own a single device that has wifi7 yet so it's not bothering me.
>>108012283>>108012342The 10g is fine if you plug it into a server or something that doesn't disconnect ever. Not so much for my desktop, every 3rd boot there'd be no internet. Also the gps chip already works as is, just read from its serial device.
>>108012533I've tried reading from the serial. I think there's an issue with the UART speeds not matching what they should and I'm not motivated enough to dig out a logic analyzer and debug it. My 10g ports go to a switch and a second w1700k and are solid after I found the right commit.
Just moved out of a crack den into an actual house that can get gigabit and I think this TP Link 9700 keeps crapping out. When it works its great, but every couple hours it just decides not to pass any internet. Modem looks like its working fine, and if I hit reboot in the routers interface the internet will come back. No idea what could be causing this.
>>108002191>wireless enjoy your radiationI only use wired My walls are covered in foil to prevent neighbours and mobile tower signals from ensuring.
>>108013872Is the foil grounded?
