Is an external SSD more durable than an external HDD?
I want to have a backup of a ton of digital shit, like manga and roms, and travel with it. Is a mechanical 2.5 external drive more prone to killing itself than a newer external SSD? I don't mind dropping 200 bucks on an SSD if it's worth it.

Yes, platters are more delicate than solid state devices, but depends on the brand. The hdd will tend to fail before an ssd if you get like a Samsung t3/t5 vs some $100ish external use 3.0 drive
>>
I've got some 1TB Toshiba portable HDDs that I bought for cheap about 14 years ago and are still going strong with regular use despite having been thrown around, dropped, and exposed to temperature extremes (hot and cold) in that time. Maybe I just lucked out but I don't see them failing anytime soon.
>>
hdds are better so long as you dont move them during use, if you have to move the device while powered on an ssd is better. Also consider speed

the sandisk ones on the right aren't reliable they are the biggest POS ever
OP get you are Crucial X10 better hurry up though since Crucial is dead now
>>
>>108016624
Provided you get one that isn't too chinkshitty, yes, SSD is better. Fewer moving parts to fuck your day up if you drop the drive.

I lost two 1TB HDD's full of my important shit in an earthquake. Both were up and spinning when everything started shaking and both died almost at the same time.
Only use SSD since then.

SSDs lose data unless you power them on occasionally. Don't expect it still have your uncorrupted data if you store it in a drawer for more than a year.

this is bullshit

Can anyone confirm whether it is false or true about this sort of thing?
>>
>>108019359
My old flash devices locked away for a decade still has stuff on it. But thats not to say that they arent corrupt, if an image for example is corrupt it will still be able to show the image mostly fine. Anything I care about is on HDDs. When a HDD breaks you can still send it to a recovery place.
>>
>>108019359
It's true but it varies a lot. Could be fine or not, but to be on the safe side you do want to power it on regularly.

>>108019380
Yeah I have some old phones I didn't power on for at least a year and some images look fine, but some files seem to be corrupt.

SSDD
>>
>>108016624
I had a lot of bad experiences with early era SSD failure. I have never had comparible experiences with HDDs outside of poorly cooled high desnity raid enclosures and my high density I have talking about 48 drives + at the top of a rack with poor airflow

SSD are faster on the short run.
HDD are faster on the long run.

which of picrel *looks* more reliable to be thrown around, bumped and disconnected while under power to you, the one on the left with drive heads sitting a few nanometers from the shiny spinny bit revolving at 5400 rpm, ready to crash right the fuck right into it and DESTROY EVERYTHING wih a momentary vibration? Or, the other one?
If its vital I'd go for a larger sized SSD than the USB thumb drive crap. They dont have enough surface area or material to dispel heat. That aside, dont rely on the SSD 100% either and back it up occasionally, you good. But 'portable' spinning scrapyard HDDs are always an accident waiting to happen.
>>
>>108019359
it is true and it is very hard to guess because the details of what they manufactured how matter

>>108016624
ssd will be lighter/smaller to travel with on average

if it absolutely needs to work for this or that reason you want to have mirrored or erasure coded multiple drives where you know how many copies you have and can verify if everything is intact
>>
>>108019380
>>108019626
Alright what’s a good external hdd for me then because I bought an ssd before I knew about all this.
>>
>>108016624
If it's for archival use an HHD, if it's for everyday constant use use an SSD
Thanks I could help, bro!

Just put it in a freezer and your data will last for decades.
>>
>>108017617
>a YEAR
If this was true you would show us the proof. A year isn't a long time.
>>
>>108019608
the controler reads "ocz", therefore the HDD is more reliable
these were the shittiest SSDs back than
>>
>>108016624
>like manga and roms
I would say it doesn't matter. You can redownload those anyway. But yeah, SSDs in theory more durable. I hovewer haven't ruined my external HDDs yet.
>>
Well shit thanks everyone, gonna grab a crucial X9
