Asking here too, since I asked at end of last thread.

Is it worth it to get an associates degree in application development? I have a bachelor's in English, and perhaps it is time I learn to code....

I guess the real questions are, for any app developers, SWEs, code monkeys etc...

>what does the majority of your working day look like?
>do you like your work?
>would you recommend this field to anyone?
>what is a good way to gauge if this is the field for me

Also, I have done some tech projects on my own and had a lot of fun. I did make a Bash script where you input a hash string or a text file of hashes, a dictionary of common passwords, and then select a hashing algorithm (sha256, sha1, md5). The script then hashes each password and sees if that output is the same as tge given hashes, finding the original term(s) that made that hash. :)
>>
>>108018795

He's also been promising me a raise and I'm already underpaid as is so I kinda want to jump ship because I genuinely do not believe he has my best interest in mind. >>108018795
>Is it worth it to get an associates degree in application development?
Most employers seem to want even total noobs to have a BS. If you have a decent personal portfolio that shows experience then certifications arent required but even then i still think employers want to see a degree on your resume. My father had a bachelors in chemistry and not a single IT certification and yet he'd get hired for unix admin positions so its possible
>what does the majority of your working day look like?
Completely self-driven. At my last job they'd give me bullshit tasks like "automate network failover" without considering the existence of network routing protocols so i hated it since i legit thought my employers were retarded. At my current job there are goals but im basically given free reign to do whatever the fuck that i want and it actually makes things enjoyable enough that i work more than i should
>do you like your work?
My current job, yes, i love it and i love finding my own things to code and test. I get paid less than i did before yet find work to be more enjoyable. I think i might enjoy it too much as i happily work 14 hour days on my own voalition
>would you recommend this field to anyone?
Only if you have a strong passion for it and actually enjoy it. If you hate writing code or you hate debugging or solving problems then I don't think you should get into it
>what is a good way to gauge if this is the field for me
If a venn diagram of what you do as a hobby and what you do (or want to do) for work is a near perfect circle. Even if i was jobless, i'd still be writing code.
>>108018938
>I have a year of experience as a software dev
>Would it be difficult to find a job?
Don't just quit like a dumbass and expect to find work quickly. I made that mistake in early 2019 and was unemployed the entire year. Keep your job and look for new employment while you are still employed

This is good advice anon. Idk what I like doing for fun, I never really coded for fun but I also struggled to find time for fun starting in HS.
I mostly focused on school, and any time not on school or sports was on video games, 4chan, or tv/movies. Sometimes reading.

I think what I need to do is try to code some junk on my own and see if I like it outside of a context of "learn this shit to study."

I really like making my Bash script, but looking back on it now, its pretty short and amateurish lol

My study plan is to read a book on Powershell and maybe Batch scripting then decide if I want to do coding or more networking junk or possibly something else. Still trying to figure out life

Also besides the coworkers, the work can be satisfying. It feels really good to set up and cable a desk with clean cabling. It feels good to close out easy tickets and see your numbers go up. It feels good to be given a problem, find a solution, and make a user happy their shit works again. It's fun to work on hardware stuff, like swap batteries or drives.
>>
>>108019127
You asked about satisfying or fulfilling. Help Desk can be that, but it doesn't pay super well.

I'm not sure if your own place would be a wise financial decision. Have you considered being an IT field technician? You basically get service calls to different businesses and go and fix a computer or two. Probably more hardware focused.

>I really like making my Bash script, but looking back on it now, its pretty short and amateurish lol
i started as a network engineer and migrated to automation engineering dev work in python. Trust me, its completely normal to look at something you did a few years ago and actually be embarassed by how sloppy it is. I fucking cringe at some of my old projects just because of the way i went about it. Its part of the learning process and totally normal. You need to find something to work on, making your life easier is a pretty good start. I have a cousin who i think has a degree in business or something and in the past year he got into python just to automate his own job. I think that is a good start.

I know, I'm not gonna quit. I'm more of a tourist, and I agree and disagree.

I do not think AI will fully replacing programming, but I think a lot of programming will be prompting AI to make the bulk of it, then having to tweak/modify it to make it work without errors. So it will still require knowledge of a language, its syntax, what works/doesn't work, good coding practices etc.

I think what "programming" will change, and it will require people to be good at idea generation, good at adaptability, but it will still require core skills of shit like, good/bad coding practices, what is/isn't efficient, or even safe, and generally shit you learn in school or with your own projects.

im about to sign into my work computer on a saturday
not because i have to but because i actually enjoy work. I built a 3U server with a supermicro mobo, 128gb of ram (LRDIMM), 22 cores just to test a production stack deployment on physical hardware (without telling a soul) and i just added an nvidia p40 to the server and want a dedicated container running vLLM

I was given an api key for AI hosted in azure for MCP testing and production but... i want it locally. I want to run the model locally. I'm signing into my work computer just to re-configure a production stack deployment, document it, and test it.

>enough people said that doing this ruined it as a hobby for them
the only way my work "ruined" this as a hobby is that i enjoy working so much that i have put off personal programming projects to work. Sure, the server i mentioned could be considered a "personal project" but its entire construction was for work testing. I have a basic bitch HP slim shitbox that operates as a NAS, emby server, and automation run server. I dont plan on replacing it with what i just built anytime soon; i actually think what i built is overkill and i'd rather power the thing off then let it run and replace my HP slim shitbox. I don't hate working though. I'v been programming for work for about 5 years now and still love every minute of it, even when its stressful or something doesnt work like i think it would, I still enjoy it
>>108021918
AI cant even replace a veteran book editor. I know because i know book editors and have talked to them about the process and issues they tackle and i dont think AI can do it. AI can correct grammar, but thats not the same thing as digging into the source of every reference used in a book and correcting imperfections.

i would recommend it to anyone with patience. development is fine-grain work so you will have to apply a lot of corrections to what you're writing

patience. having the discipline to organize your code properly might also be helpful. would you mind building a real world house out of legos with others? if you would, stay away

>I've been wondering if tech workers will be replaced by AI in the coming years, I hear people saying that and I don't know who to believe.
AI will make the most unmotivated employees unemployed because the more motivated devs will be able to achieve more in less time
AI wont make the top 50% or whatever redundant because they will still write the code, AI-assisted, and review the AI code and adapt it into more readable and maintainable code base. they will also continue to be the storages of knowledge of the overall structure of the code, it's inner workings, etc

What languages, besides english, do you guys recommend learning?

I suppose those of you who are americans in the US don't really think about this, because you have the best job market for this at home. But personally I am thinking about learning a third language, and I want it to pay off in terms of job prospects, whether by giving me the chance to live somewhere else with better pay if I ever want to, or getting me a better job without moving.

I already speak fluent english and it helps immensely with tech jobs.

I thought of chinese and japanese, but the thing is, with what I heard about their work culture, there is no way I'll ever live and work there. It's out of the question for me to live like the locals do. Could those languages still pay off?

Other than that there's german, which I am already learning and can already read on a very basic level. Germany is cozy and even if I don't move to germany (which I don't actually plan to), it's probably good for tech jobs to speak it. Many tech jobs in Europe are contractors for germans. But idk if it's worth it to continue down this path vs an asian language.
>>
>>108025505
german, spanish, french, or dutch, in that order
any of the big 3 asian ones if you're willing to sell your soul, but it sounds like you're not, so don't
>>
>>108025337
Dude coding is coding.

Early this year I was off for like 3 months because my mental health was bad (that's a thing in Europe, I still got paid), and I missed coding to the point I started doing leetcode kek (until I got back).

I'd say a job that is different every day and very similar to solving puzzles is MUCH better than a physical chump job kek
>>
>>108025527
I am from Spain so already speak spanish and english. I guess I'll continue with German.

I was wondering if there was some kind of niche where speaking one of the big asian languages would help without having to actually move there, but I guess probably not kek

So the biggest problem is that boomer companies equate education with ability. which is why timmy with a bachelor's can't compete with the hoard of jeets with a masters. And how that happens usually is jeets in india cheat their way for an undergrad degree there. Then they apply to an American uni for an F1 visa, then they cheat their way through the american uni for a master's degree. Then they apply to american jobs with a Masters in Computer Science and companies give them visa sponsorships. And almost no white timmy can displace them from the visa sponsorship because on paper someone with MS is more qualified with BS despite being braindead retards when it comes to critical thinking or designing any kind of complex backend system. And white timmies don't usually go for a master's degree because they don't see a big need, while jeets see it as a path to a visa (even though they have jingoism even though they see being deported as the worst possible punishment)
>>
>>108025613

Tbf, there's plenty of things boomers in management do wrong, but the market is doing its thing, pushing bad choices, and entirely getting rid of businesses that don't learn and keep making bad choices. It's a very slow process sometimes, but it's there.

When there's a gorillion pajeets out there willing to code for peanuts and programmer salaries are still high, it becomes obvious that companies are paying a huge premium to hire people who are not pajeets. They know pajeets are stupid but nobody can say it.

Lots of pajeets still get hired of course, what I am saying is, if they were competent, and a real threat, it would not be that they get many jobs, they would get ALL the jobs and truly end programming jobs in the west, which is not happening.

There's also retards like Elon Musk who believe that a submissive hardworking pajeet in an office all day is better than a creative high IQ white guy working remotely, and that's why twitter is bugged as fuck whereas with the woke management it sucked but technically worked fine.
>>
>>108025683
>>108025613

Btw I am not saying I disagree with you. At all. Just felt like adding this context but by no means am I saying you're wrong, because you are right. Just saying because I just realized it kinda sounds like I'm disagreeing.
>>
>>108023781
That's the fever dream of a retarded boomer executive (who should be lynched anyway for importing jeets). AGI will never happen, and AI at most will become a rapid prototyping or drafting tool that needs to be extensively tested. What the executives want is a world where bugs and broken edge cases are the norm. If you want to make an impact, try creating a bug free high performance product that can compete with what companies are offering.

I'm underqualified for any job that would pay as much as I'm being paid now and basically stuck four days on-site with no hope of ever getting a comparable remote-only role without taking a significant pay cut or lose a lot of the perks I have now. what am I to do as a data scientist in pharma

Easy to say shit like this when you're a billionaire. He also said having kids is free, because he doesn't even give a single thought to grocery expenses, rent/mortgage, daycare, entertain costs, etc. Anyway, the rest of us that didn't grow up owning an emerald mine are just shucking and jiving the wagieshuffle to keep our bills paid.
>>
>>108017212
I did that in university and haven't needed to since.

Technically the S&P 500 is going up but only against the dollar, if you plot it against gold it is going down so it might be inflation proof but it is not gonna yield any returns.
>>
>>108034722
what an insane definition
are you paying rent or monthly bills in gold or dollars?

>Career changer bootcamper
>Landed internship because my previous career experience aligned with the company
>Got hired full-time 2 years ago
>Working on green field API project developing skills in backend, kubernetes, postgres, etc. with very little hassle or pressure
>Manager wants to promote me

Have I basically won the lottery in the current tech market? I feel insanely lucky

im starting to sweat lads.
everyone around me is getting laid off.
it's not just the tiktok roasties now. people who are actually good at their jobs are getting the boot.
i'm just going to be left with a team of indians that can barely communicate and dont do any work.
what are my options besides kms?
>>
Can I just ask for a raise or wait for a review from management and then ask? Idk when I'm having a review tho
>>
>>108035407
The bigger the firm, the more laughable the raises they give you after these reviews.
Try to get some interviews and some offers as a backup just in case, even if you're not planning to actually leave.
If you're "indispensable", you can just try bluffing.
>>
>>108033552
Oh no you have to work in office at a job you're not qualified to have, for more money than you deserve
ohhh nooooooo
>>
>>108035333
Enjoy the ride, watch the world burn. But update your CV and send it to to 5000 companies. Include that you're 1% Native American and have been to Epstein's island.

Back then I thought this was dumb, but now I get why people like this make it to their 60s while tech guys don’t
Tech jobs also abuse people by saying “you’ll learn a lot doe, it’s not about za money.” But from what I’ve seen, it’s just bullshit
>>
>Multiple rounds of layoffs
>Im next in line
>Company consistently hitting only 60% of their target to break even
>Leetcode going badly
>Have not done personal project in years

Tick tick… I’m so fucked. Probably have like 3 month? Sucks to fucking suck.
>>
>>108035454
I built the entire backend for the first project that they've ever released to the public that's gonna integrate with a lot of their other software that they have planned and I lead their AI projects. I'd say I'm indispensable but I've seen my boss fire people like it's nothing (granted, they'd only been working for like a month and I'm way better than them). Still, it does bother me and it makes me feel like I don't matter at all anyways
>>
>>108035679
The only way to get the raise you want in a company like that is by threatening to leave.
>>
>>108035671
>Im next in line
how do you know
>>
>>108035695
Because I’m lowest on the experience ladder. Current verbiage is that you’re meant to fire all your engineers that don’t have 10+ years experience.
>>
>>108035690
I can't just ask my boss for one directly? He's said before that he "needs to pay me more so I can get married to my gf already" but I've been waiting to have our performance reviews to actually discuss it but it's been like 3 weeks since we were supposed to have them and nothing has come of it yet. I know he's busy but I think going this long without any kind of review is absurd and it's starting to get on my nerves
>>
>>108035728
You can try asking him directly, but more often than not it's going to be the same old song about "the times" being "rough right now".
They only start moving their asses when there's a real chance of you leaving.
>>
>>108035769
Fair enough. Is the job market still fucked? I haven’t been paying attention to it since I got my job. I have a CS bachelors and I have a little over a year of experience. I could try applying to other places in the meantime just to test the waters and try to leverage that but I don’t want to do it if it’s gonna cost me my job. I think I have a good relationship with everyone at my job and I don’t want to ruin it
>>
I am gonna be honest, I don't mind working. It provides some structure to my day.

Im entering CS next year with all the math courses finished.
Haven't done anything yet class wise, but I have been learning courses like cs50, TOP, making beginner-tier projects, doing easy leetcode problems (only in python but i could probably do it in C, other langs if i had enough time to practice the syntax), and ive made some video game mods in rust which were less about riddle solving in courses and more about working with already made code.

What else should i be preparing myself with?
I live right next door to a cable company hiring for SWE juniors, and despite my autism and inexperience atm im hoping to achieve my goal. I know id need to get an intership in the future.

I feel like I have to use Claude as much as possible because all my coworkers are doing the same thing and will have more output than me if I don't use it as well. Then management will get mad and throw shit at me because I'm "slow"
