Here's just a few you'll get recommended if you're new to Linux:
>Mint
>Fedora
>Debian
>Arch
>Manjaro (Not by /g/ but worth noting)
Look at this crap. Those are advertised as beginner distros when there's better stuff than this you could easily recommend to people.

>Fedora
No proprietary software means you don't have out of the box driver support for nvidia and a bunch of videos don't work. Wow, so I need to setup all this stuff.

>Mint
Gets recommended to people because "it just works" and "the interface is like Windows". People understand new computer desktop environments in a few minutes.
Even then, Mint is just a shitty double downstream. You need to know that you should reinstall Firefox but as a flatpak/appimage and if you do install it as a flatpak, to use flatseal, because firefox and all the software you get is wildly outdated.

>Debian
Outdated installer bundled with outdated software

>Arch
You already know
Stop recommending this shit to newcomers

>Manjaro
Here because it advertises itself as a beginner friendly distro which is a different problem, it certainly doesn't help.
It breaks more often than Arch. It holds back pacman packages which can cause problems if you use the console at the wrong time. Its just a unstable version of Arch Linux which isn't a beginner friendly distribution at all.

I'm almost starting to think its because people think of their distro as their favorite sports team and want it to win instead of actually help people

Ubuntu

because you jack to trannies. that's why. fuck you faggot.
>>
>>108018751
Actually a fine choice but people will not advise you to avoid bullshit remixes that Canonical doesn't care about, like Kubuntu.
>>
After seeing what happened to the internet don't you think we should be gatekeeping Linux to keep the retards out? Btw I use arch
>>
best beginner distros are mint and ubuntu
both has complete usability using GUI and you don't ever need to open the terminal if you don't want to

>Install Mint
>Filepicker when I'm using 4chan doesn't have images
>Addons can't be used because my Firefox version is outdated, but I can't update it, and Mint says its on the newest version
>RAM usage keeps going up for some reason

>A few months later the system melts on itself because I've added more PPAs than I should and modified more shit than I ought
>Realize Linux is shit

Just use Nobara or Bazzite
>>
>>108018904
Should've picked Ubuntu, which does not have these issues

I haven't tested Nobara and Bazzite yet because I'm not a "gamer" but I'm sure its gonna be the same shit.

I have that issue too, is there a way to fix it?
>>
>>108018751
fpbp, you really can't beat ubuntu as far as linux desktop go (unless you're a hobbyist/tinkerer)
>>
>>108018977
You need to update to a newer Firefox version

You can get Firefox from Flatpak. Be sure to use Flatseal on it to give the program permissions, otherwise it won't be able to download stuff.
Alternatively you can do this shit, which might be better on the long run
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

Alternatively you can switch to a Distro that actually just werks out of the box instead of the Mint meme

>>Mint
>>Fedora
>>Debian
all 3 are fine except you should keep this in mind
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_version_history (since mint uses ubuntu's packages)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian_release_version_history
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedora_Linux_release_history

getting new programs every half-year (fedora) is way better than getting new programs every 2 years. having used many frequently-updated stuff from the software repositories often the stuff on mint/debian was ancient and lacked tons of features vs newer fedora versions.

>Arch
if you are unemployed, doing this on a secondary pc and are willing to spend the weekend following guides go ahead. otherwise just get cachyos which is just a more well-packaged arch with an installer.

honestly the whole 'which distro should i pick' discussion is mostly redundant nowdays you can somewhat run every program on every distro though flatpak/containers/appimages/nix/homebrew.... it honestly doesnt matter that much. for most people a bigger choice is cinnamon vs gnome vs plasma
>>
>>108018744
WTF you talking about? Why would anyone replace aany package with a shitty flatpak? Flatpak was never necessary. Ever. This issue is when the "use case?" meme is real.
>>
>>108018999
But I update Firefox regularly. It has pictures they’re just small and in the bottom right corner. I want them all big like on Windows.
>>
>>108019049
What version is your firefox? Newest is 147.0.2.
>>
>>108019023
It's mostly just an over-analysed question of whether to use Debian, Arch, or Fedora - and how complicated you want that to be.
>>
>>108019054
Not sure I’ll have to check when I’m at my pc. I’m phone posting right now.
>>
>>108018744
Just install Debian, nigga. It's good for everyone.
>>
>>108019077
Even if I'm wrong switching to flatpak firefox will still fix it I think. If not then this is even funnier.

>>108019023
>>108019096
You are in denial
>>
>>108018999
It's not recommended to install browsers through flatpak. It interferes with their sandboxing. Most people don't care, but it is what it is. Installing Firefox from the tarball is another way to have an up to date Firefox. On Debian based distros you can use Mozilla's repo.

denial of what?
>>108019096
depends on your use case i use it (really dietpi which is a more like a hardware-specific debian distribution) on a machine that just launches containers.

for my main machine debian is just too slow updating. maybe if you use it's more frequent branches idk.
>>
>>108019096
>half of all key bindings aren't there, have to put them in manually
>no direction on how to install things (and what you can install)
>screen flickers often, have to reboot and hope it doesn't do it again
>tweaking free/non-free software support
>no driver support, have to tinker just to get your hardware working appropriately
>no update manager
the learning curve isnt that steep, but it's certainly not for beginners
>>
>>108018744
sorry, you need to have an universally agreed on beginner country to have a beginner house/job to put your beginner pc in first
>>
>>108019108
i thought browsers were always updated even in point release distros because its security-critical

i think atleast in fedora it's like that
>>
>>108019023
Fedora gets new software way more often than that. It's not really that far behind Arch. They are both on Plasma 6.5.5 for example. I kind of view Fedora as an easier to setup Arch.
>>
Because beginners don't know what they actually need. They ask flawed questions and have stupid requirements that are usually not their actual requirements, like specific software or hardware. The most stupid requirement of all that they not be required to do anything work themselves. Beginners don't even know what that extra work or reading entails but they tell you it's impossible out of the gate before they have tried anything.

I will recommend things with more initial setup and a greater learning curve if it will be the better choice in the long run. You will presumably be using the install for thousands of hours and relying on it for all kinds of tasks so I dismiss your reluctance to spend just a few more hours to learn option B over A. I will simply hop right over and dismiss your dumb hard requirement that a distro be ""noob tier" because I know more than you and I know it's better not to entertain your stupid questions that won't matter once your dip your toes in the water.

Do you know why Linux is so hard for newbies to get into? It's because the average hardcore Linux user looks like this and don't wanna help normies!
>>
>>108018744
Outside fo Fedora and Debian, who the FUCK is recommending the others to beginners?

Just install Debian, BTW.

Manjaro advertises themselves as user friendly distro
What do you mean by "who the FUCK is recommending the others to beginners?" exactly?
>>
autists overcomplicating this, just put newbies onto ubuntu and let them explore its flavours to see what they like most in linux systems. if they want to tinker and dive deeper they can repeat the process on debian.
>>
>>108019124
i dont think they do plasma 6.5 was around before fedora locked the versions of all the packages for the fedora 43 release.

if there's anything new or quickly changing you'll only see it in the COPR repos or rawhide/next version branch not in the regular fedora repos. fedora IS point release just more reasonable about it than debian's 2 year wait time for packages
>>
>>108019141
>like specific software or hardware
I'm on a Nvidia 4000 series with a AMD Ryzen CPU.
I need to run videogames, both new and emulated stuff (Not just proton but stuff like PS2 games).
I'm ALSO kind of a audiophile though. And wouldn't you know it, I also shitpost on 4chan.

Throw your recommendation.

6.5.5 was released earlier this month.

>>Filepicker when I'm using 4chan doesn't have images
Who picks images from the file picker anyway? Not to say that it doesn't need to be fixed (I haven't even bothered with it but it is doable) but why not just look through the folder directly in a file manager window and drag and drop? I did it that way even on windows
>>
>>108018744
I would recommend lubuntu
>>

The most beginner friendly is Zorin. It's even easier than windows.
