Whats the best ebook reader to get that is not a kindle one (or a kindle one thats easily "rootable" sonto say)? Preferable the cheaper one
There is no single best since there's a lot of different use cases and preferences.Go with a small Kobo, e.g. Clara BW, if you want an entry level model for reflowable content.
kobo or onyx probably. not all have the same taste and the best != the cheapest
>>108023323Kobo Libra Color
don’t get any of the android ones. Dedicated ereaders don’t need OS bloat. get a kobo
>>108023353Just want something small but not to small to read comfortably, and where I can easily transfer ebooks and pdf files from my computer, dont care about colors
>>108023432YMMV on that, android gives you software to have different file sync, tts and so on. could also be more useful for notetaking with stylus, or to use the offline capable light novel/manga/project gutenberg/wikipedia/... readers
>>108023323moon reader+ on a phone with dark gray background and soft white text. every book ever made at your fingertips for free. eink is garbage
>>108023463pdf are a big can of worms.Every reader is willing to open them but the actual results are often less than ideal, especially on a small device.Get the Kobo and you'll see for yourself. You can install Koreader to somewhat improve the situation but there's always going to be limitations.
>>108023471>every book ever made at your fingertips for free. eink is garbageDon't talk abut things you don't understand. There's tons of books that aren't available for free. e-ink is unbeatable for reading in daylight.

>>108023323are ereaders good for manga? would get a colour one like pic related
>>108025327i recently got a kobo libra color for manga/comics and it's alright when it actually works but kobo is extremely autistic about file formats and you'll find there are .cbz/cbrs it just refuses to recognize for literally no reason requiring you download calibre and fuck with plugins and it's totally random and arbitrary what doesn't work. calibre is also autistic and will waste your time showing you that it's transferring books for 10 minutes only to not actually do anything.like when everything works and i don't have to think about it, it really is great, comic books are fucking expensive so it's been nice reading all the Star Wars comics i missed out on or finally getting to read the original manga for Dragon Ball and Jojo but it's so autistic. a straight up tablet would probably be better if you could justify the cost/use it for other things.
>>108025327they expensive, just get a chinkshit tablet like alldocube for 100 bucks, they work well enough for what you need, and you can use apps like mihon so you dont need to manually download new chapters every week off nyaa
>>108023323I sold by boox air3c after having it for one month. Was nice but heavy as fuck and I don't draw or take notes. Going to get their 7 go series.
>>108025327Only if you get a larger model with 10" or even better 13", e.g. Boox Tab XC or Note Air 5C. With Android based devices like Boox you can install various applications for extra flexibility.
>>108025789How much manga do you even read?
>>108025327better get an oled tablet
>>108023534How is this device, I'm interested. Can you just pop epubs on their or need to convert/format them somewhat.
>>108023323A blank notebook, just copy all the books you want to read onto it.
>>108023323I got a Kobo Clara BW (black&white) and I'm very happy with it. It's just small enough to fit in my jacket pocket. Background lighting and font size can be adjusted, books can be bought or checked out from a library via wifi, but you can also connect it to a computer via USB-C and copy books onto it. (Which is what I usually do, I have a huge collection already.) I don't have much experience with PDFs as you'd have to zoom in and out and pan the pages around, it's more comfortable to get a book in EPUB format and scale the font to a size that you're comfortable with reading.
>>108023323Why do you think you need to root a Kindle? You just plug it into your pc and put the files there.... it's also really cheap
>>108030779Not him but books on a Kindle don't belong to you, they belong to Amazon and Amazon can delete them remotely any time they want. Apparently this has happened to users.
>>108030794Yeah but that's for books bought through Amazon, no? Surely they can't go about deleting my local files that I dragged and dropped on it
>>108030865I'm not sure but after hearing the stories I wouldn't trust Kindle one bit. That's why I personally paid extra money to get a Kobo.
>>108030900 I'll stick to it right now because I haven't switched airplane mode off in like 2 years anyway. But thanks for the info anon, shady stuff
>>108030779>You just plug it into your pc and put the files there.Provided they're in a specific, non-standard format.
>>108030950Oh opening a website called 'convert x to y', the horror
>>108031186Yes, but would you open that website 2000 times if you alread had a collection in format x? Or would you just get a reader that might be a bit more expensive (not subsidized by Amazon) that supports format x?
>>108028734If you install custom firmware, then yes https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader
>>108031272I'd keep my collection on my PC/Home Server and load stuff to the reader a couple at a time as I read them. Not trying to argue anything here, I get your point, it's just not worth it to me since in my country other readers cost at least thrice as much as a Kindle, which is not inexpensive to begin with. I live in Brazil.
>>108031730We seem to have pretty high sales taxes and import tariffs here in Europe, but I get what you mean. The cheapest Kindle here is about 100 Euros (about 120 USD). Last year I paid 140 Euros for a Kobo (about 165 USD). A bit much, but I use it often and I've got a huge collection of ebooks. Whenever I research prices, I find that US Americans pay a lot less for devices like phones, ebook-readers, laptops, etc. even though their dollar is worth less than the euro. I don't know how things are in Brazil.
>>108031855Tolino is a European alternative. They have the same externals as Kobo but run Android.
>>108032032Yes, Tolino is basically the same hardware as a Kobo, but with a different firmware. A Tolino would have been 20 euros cheaper, but I've had huge problems with their firmware in the past. In fact an update bricked my old Tolino and made it completely unusable.
>>108023323I have paperwhite, quite easily hackable but I don't quite like KOReader not stock kindle reader desusomething Moon+ Reader I have on android is way comfiersad I can't run it on my kindle
>>108023323I would like to know if one of those Aliexpress "generic" ones are good enough. American readers are way too expensive for a Mexican. I do not care if the software is a bit slower or not as polished or whatever, just functional nice reader. I read old crusty and taped soft covers all the time. I just want something to reduce the bulk of my bag and allow me carry several books in one. Autonomy and readability (need mentioning even?) are the most important thing. I recently got this Mechen M30 and am surprised, it literally lasted 30 hours playing 320kbps MP3 with the screen off at a low-medium volume (audible fully in my quiet home), and still had over 20% available when I recharged it. The OS blows because it is limited, buy I adapted around it, formated some metadata, and organized a playlist in folder form, after that I only listen to music I dont care for the OS, and the autonomy is on point. I am often outside and do have bug out bags because of the nature of the border I live in, so an MP3 player for a camping trip with a week of music if I only listen 5 hours per day... not bad at all... I would like a reader like that.
>>108028276thisPDF reading, such a Game Guides, photography books, schematics, magazines, Graphic Movels, books like House of Leaves by Danielewski, all of these are to be read in a tablet with bright colors. I have a 12 year old tablet that lets me read PDFs for about 6 hours it is fine, it charges each time I pause my reading, that is old.
