What's the best DE for gaming? I've had countless issues on Ubuntu

Xfce. All the gnome-related DEs have some weird issues with games run through wine or GOG games. KDE sometimes too. And those excluded, there is only XFCE, if you don't want your computer to look like shit (LXDE, LXQT)

I used XFCE for years, but it always had terrible tearing in games, even when I swirched to compton (or pico or whatever its called now). I switched to KDE: Problem solved.
KDE, Gnome. Or get a WM. Modern wayland compositors use unredirection for fullscreen apps so overhead should be minimal to nonexistent. Some X11 compositors behave the same and unredirect fullscreen applications. The difference is, on X11 I can blacklist applications from using VRR regardless of what compositor I use. I can only do this on Wayland if I use KDE Plasma.
