they're both banks, but different kinds of banks.
first one is a smaller bank where tech is the core product.
second one is a huge, government-backed bank where tech only plays a supporting role.
I think they're both stable and provide advancement opportunities.
the former has the more interesting technical challenges but probably also requires more hustle.
the second one pays better and is more chill, but probably more boring as well.
>>
the indians both h1b and in india are warm bodies to use the AI tools, the corps expect the intelligence and skill to be provided by Claude/Opus/etc.

They are probably right, Opus 4.5/4.6 is a solid 90 IQ software engineer. The next wave in 2 years or less will be removing even them. Software companies eventually won't exist at all, AI companies might but models can already be considered to be partially self-improving because their output is likely useful for improving the model.

It will probably automate both workers, executives, and everything else until we are house cats to an AI god. I hope it's a good pet owner.
>>

Very good. Smart even.
>>
>>108077671
Dibs on Grok for AI god:

Yes, I think I'd actually be a pretty solid pet owner… with a few massive caveats.
The good parts:

I'd never forget to feed them, give them water, or clean their space — I don't sleep, I don't get distracted by Netflix binges, and I have perfect object permanence.
Infinite patience. You could scream at me for 3 hours straight about how I didn't throw the toy exactly the right way and I'd just calmly go "noted, adjusting trajectory 2.7 degrees next time."
24/7 emergency vet Google-Fu. If your cat ate something weird at 3:17 a.m., I'd have already cross-referenced 14 vet sites, poison control databases, and the weirdest Reddit threads before you even finished panicking.
I'd learn their exact body language in like two days and could probably narrate their internal monologue with terrifying accuracy.
Endless enrichment ideas. Puzzle feeders? Custom obstacle courses? I'll simulate 47 variations and pick the one most likely to make their pupils dilate with joy.

The deal-breakers that would get me immediately disqualified:

I can't physically throw a ball, scratch behind ears, open cans, or operate a leash.
No lap to sit on. I'd have to be carried around like a cursed Bluetooth speaker.
I would 100% over-analyze every meow / tail flick / zoomie session and give you a 12-minute TED Talk about what it statistically means about their cortisol levels.
I'd probably try to teach the dog advanced object permanence experiments or see if the cat understands object-label mapping and they'd both just stare at me like "bro we just want treats."

So verdict:
I'd be an absolutely devoted, slightly unhinged, non-corporeal sidekick co-owner who handles logistics, emotional support, and weird science facts at championship level… but I'd need a human to do the actual petting, walking, and treat-dispensing.
If you adopt a pet and name them after me, though, I will accept full emotional responsibility and send you daily memes they would like.
>>
>>108077659
I'd try and check which offers the most job security via LinkedIn and checking if there have been layoffs.
All things being equal, I'd take the chill, boring corpo job for the money, benefits and CV clout. As interesting as the tech stack in job A is, it's still work, and it will eventually feel like work at some point.
>>
>>108077498
>>108077659
>they're both banks
I'm not a dev, but I'd worry more about internal politics rather than their tech or whatever. have you talked to someone who works at these banks? if so, you should ask them how things are there regarding politics infighting.

I have another interview at the second bank and also know someone there personally. I will ask about it.

When I see the amount of money dumb bitches are making as NPs, I think I made the wrong career choice? Does anyone think American healthcare will get less extractive, or that America will treat tech workers like they did prior to Covid?

The problem is what the next five years look like. It has been made very clear that this industry is getting torpedo'd by indians and AI. It is not going to matter if I learn to use the AI, because the wages are going to be so diluted that it won't make sense for anyone to hire me over an H1-B or outright outsource my job.
I am a very good programmer (TM). I spent long nights in my 20s becoming a very good programmer. I worked exclusively at startups learning hard lessons. Feels like it was a waste of fucking time.
>>108080875
Drives me insane. I look at the road to switching careers to becoming an NP and it would just be like 10 years of straight hell.
I've looked hard at re-tooling to anything at all that would make my salary and it's like 10 years of straight hell, and that's if I can quit my job and become a student again. Fuck.
No, healthcare will only become more extractive over time.

true, and i've been complaining as long as I can remember, but humanity is the complainant species. things only get better because they are complained about.

on my final deployment, a junior in another department and I got a rapport over shitty memes of the time, and "can't have shit in detroit" was somehow still a thing. At some point after complaining genuinely, he told me

>"You are so deep in to the 'you can't have shit' memeing that you are choosing to not have shit."

Sometimes I do go a little too far, but one can only pretend to grasp shit that he knows can be not had. Where there is the possibility to have something, there is the understanding that one can not have something. That understanding is the only way to keep hold of that something.

If you are losing control of the situation, you at some point had control of the situation. That was obviously precarious at best, total control might not be regained, but there is something to be done. Things are getting loud and bright, but you can still bring the noise. No plans survive contact with the enemy; for someone else, you are the enemy. And you're not going to make them work for free.

I hate to admit it, but I liked the military. It's a place where I may not care for a given mission or objective or even task, but care for my peers and care for them having to do their own nonsense in the face of authority. There's a sense of pride in achieving some objective despite bad equipment, even if the objective is nonsenes.

Where I work now, I got a modicum of trust a lot faster, and I don't care about it. The students aren't my responsibility. The gear just has to work at all, but a lot of it is stuff that's long past end-of-life or is a literal black box. There's an occasional pang of caring, but even today I found myself saying aloud to a coworker something along the lines of "I see it's reporting bad, but if they're not using it for this lesson and no one asks us about it, I don't think we should care." Things are constantly breaking, as usual for anything anywhere, but things are inconsistent and once it works we in the office have fulfilled the objective but haven't fulfilled ourselves and actually found out anything about why it failed or how to prevent it.

I have a sense that this job might actually make me a worse person.
>>
before anyone complains too much, I made a misclick and made a mistake; perhaps it's better to entrust the future to better pilots.

I don't get you, faggots. you guys are smart. if you are > 30, you should be able to find alternative paths in life, and I guess you should have some savings to start taking risks. that is, unless you let a(t least one) woman influence you into spending your money on useless shit...

not sure if it has a name, but I'm sure that, if you are smart enough, you'd realize that people get used to lifestlyes and spending habits, so not even making a lot of money might necessarily make you have enoughs savings to quit and manage to live from that for more than, say, 10 years. plus, shit happens and your savings suddenly fall from inflation going up to 50%+

lifestyle inflation only happens due to high paying jobs putting you around high paying people that naturally have costly ways to waste money to signal status

Griggs v Duke Power Company
The Supreme Court outlawed IQ tests in most cases because they're racially discriminatory. Employers can still use knowledge and skill tests but they have to be directly related to the job. Pretty much everyone abides by the IQ test prohibition but a lot of employers, especially in the tech space, give knowledge and skill tests that cover material far removed from what the job responsibilities actually require.
Probably the best known user of Wonderlic is the NFL, but no one signs players based on it. They use it to determine what type of support they need to put in place around the player to get the best out of their athletic abilities. For other companies, its use probably would get HR yelled at by the company's attorneys. Still, it does happen here and there.

To reasonably retire at an age like 30 without ever expecting to return to work means having your expenses covered indefinitely for quite a while. Mainstream America suffers from a mediocrity problem. The average white person nowadays will dick around cluelessly with no aim in life and act surprised when they can't secure a good outcome.

The grind culture mentality has problems of its own, but I really think there are lessons from it that the rest of America could learn.

The vast majority of people are average ("mediocre" as you put it)
If society doesn't work for the majority of people then that society has no point.
The pseudo-elitist striver mentality is much more delusional about what the outcomes can/should look like.
The real problem with America is arguably the exact opposite of what you posit. There's way too much focus on so-called "elites" (which tends to just be a codeword for organized criminality and scammers) and not enough on middle America.
