>>108088724Schiit Modi/Magni or JDS Labs Atom DAC/Amp stack?

>>108088787I've owned older versions of Magni/Modi and they were pretty 1:1 with the Atom sound wise, just QC wise the Atom is probably a safer bet - they're tanks. The new Modi 5 has the Mesh DAC in it (which I like in my Jot 3) so you might get a little more colour in the sound. JDS stuff is always aiming for as neutral/clean as possible with what they do.Marvo has some stuff on the new Magni/Modi here: https://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/schiit-unity-mesh-dac-card-modi-5-stream-of-consciousness-review.15392/page-2#post-453847Atom2 you could find in 100 different places, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone talk bad about it.
>>108088765Think ASR have narrowed this issue down to the 4.4 connector being completely dogshit and frying everything as a result. The internals of the DX5II in general are a fucking trainwreck though: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/topping-dx5ii-teardown.64527/

So this is a dumb story>Owned Bose QC since 2017>Fucking fantastic comfort, and great neutral audio> Wore them to death>The 2.5mm jack port is "loose" and any angled pressure makes the audio disconnect >The wire simply shifting slightly will make it cut out and I have to spin the jack a bit to get the audio back>New Bose QC are $300 in leafstan, way overpriced now>Went looking for new headphones and wanted to try the Koss and got way overhyped, it's an obvious step down>When the Bose work they're still the best and I don't want to abandon themIf I could replace the pads and fix the port I could make them last another 10 years genuinely. Any advice on fixing headphone ports?

Every time I use these I feel like something is missing, but everytime I sell them off I miss them. I've just come to terms with the fact that the HD800S does something special for me that no other headphone does. Maybe it's the comfort. Idk. On my 5th HD800 model. Not gonna sell it this time. >>108088724 this is a problem i am facing. i need to find new wireless headphone that allow me to connect to mobile app while connected by cable to my laptop. i have my EQ in the mobile app and i want to be able to change the EQ in real time. what i have now is that i can connect to my laptop using 3.5 mm audio jack and keep my headphones ON so that the DSP is still running. But the DSP keeps the last EQ set in the mobile app. as soon as i connect the wire the bluetooth disconnects and i lose access to the mobile app. i can still use the headphone NOise cancelling and DSP when it is connected by cable but ther is no way to simultaneously connect to me bluetooth on mobile phone and real time manage the app. i am currently using the soundcfore life q35, if that helps. >>108088724I have a pair of HD650s.They're... Like 15 years old. They still work fine, with a few repairs over the years. I connect them to my PC via a Behringer 802 I got like 10 years ago. This also still works fine.I was considering getting a Schiit Stack and looking at my options to replace the 650s, should I ever feel that their time has come. Any suggestions? I haven't looked into any of this shit for a long time.
>>108090653Schiit you could do a cheap AIO with the Magni Unity + Mesh and cover it there. Atom2 stack is a good alternative too. Anything else would be pretty unnecessary power wise, unless you want something like a HE6/Tungsten for an upgrade.RN I'm still on my 650s while I wait for my Uli to arrive lmao, I actually still love them with EQ + ZMF pads. If you give us a price range on new cans I'm sure you'll get some good suggestions.
>>108090669If you're still sticking with 300ohm headphones and wanted to do something new, something like the Lyr+ at the end of the month, Bottlehead Crack DIY Amp or XDuoo TA-66 might be worth looking at if you're into tube-boosted bass. Just throwing other suggestions out there to give you an idea.
>>108089653do you honestly believe that redditor?you think he had a DX5ii break and didn't return it as it is definitely under warranty/guarantee and bought another one and it breaks and he doesn't return it and he thinks "I know, i will buy another one" and it breaks.really, you believe that?
>>108088724>currynigger dongle
Best 300 Ohm Senny sound source I have heard so far is the headphone jack of my laptop >Has a high output impedance, fucks up multidriver IEM tonality the moment it touches them, but pleasurably adds bass on senny >Got a tube-like distortion >Gives out up to 1Vrms max, but I normally listen at 50-60/100 volume, so it is more than enough >Is basically free Why don't you give your shitty built-in audio jack a try? One man's trash is other man's treasure
>>108091543Why would I use sennheisers.
>>108091554They are one of the best headphones ever made to my taste, I would pick them over 99% of modern headphones Timbrally perfect for vocals and instrumental music, also quite comfy The only shortcoming is bass, but with brand new earpads they can do the necessary minimum required for a coherent audio signature.
>>108091630hd600 are the lowest resolution headphones I've ever heard. It's like you're only hearing 50% of music with them. And they're too small.
>>108091722I did not say that I use HD600 though. Firstly, old or bad pads can make them sound low-res, this is valid for all sennies.Secondly - I was lucky enough to fish out an early version of HD580 with paper meshes (Early HD600s also feature a very similar tonality), but they curbed down the V-shape signature later in production, yet early production units have resolution which can compete even with some estats, also they have the best bass. Ironically there is less of a difference between modern HD600/6xx/650 models than between early and late HD600 production units.
Imagine still wearing head-clamps in 2026> Be me> Buy $500 "mid-fi" open backs because some YouTuber told me the "soundstage" is wide> My ears are sweating, my hair has a permanent dent, and I look like a budget helicopter pilot> Meanwhile...Imagine still being an open-back cuck in the year of our lord 2026. If you are spending more than 300€ on open-back headphones, you are officially a victim of the industry. Why 300€? Because that’s the price of a pair of Adam D3V (the iLoud Micro are even cheaper although they're slightly worse). These things literally revolutionized desk audio while you were busy arguing about balanced cables. Why would I strap two heavy drivers to my skull to get "imaging" when I can have actual near-field monitors that wipe the floor with your precious HD600s? The HD600 is a 30-year-old relic. It’s the "muh vintage" of the audio world. Move on.And don't even get me started on closed-backs. Buying closed-back headphones is basically paying to have a claustrophobic panic attack while your ears reach 40°C. They are heavy, uncomfortable, and objectively worse than modern IEMs.Look at the Truthear Gate. It costs less than a lunch at McDonald’s and has a frequency response curve that makes your $1000 Focal Stellias look like a joke. The balance is objectively better. The efficiency is higher. I can carry them in my pocket. The reality check: * Desktop: Adam D3V (Real imaging, no neck strain). * Mobile/Privacy: Truthear Gate (Better tuning, zero bulk). The era of the "Head-Fi" enthusiast is over. Headphones are a dead medium. You're not an audiophile; you're just a guy wearing a heavy hat that makes noise.Headphones are finished.
>>108089899>I get hissing whenever I turn the dial on the Magnihttps://www.thomannmusic.com/onlineexpert_page_potentiometers_help_my_pot_is_scratchy.htmlThis problem will eventually develop on every device that uses a pot for volume control, which also includes the Atom 2. The Element 4, on the other hand, has an optical rotary encoder under that big knob, which IIRC controls volume digitally. Or could be a volume control IC, not quite sure. In any case, it should never develop this specific problem, though the rotary encoder or something else could still fail. Supposedly, the rotary encoder is very reliable, but who really knows. As a side benefit, channel balance is perfect at all volume settings, even at minimum volume.

>>108091084I mean, could be he bought 3 because he actually wanted 3, to use them in multiple setups (living room/PC/whatever), some people do that. But whatever, I shan't visit reddit to find out.
>>108091974Can't really relate I bought a Neumann 120KHII setup with a sub first, it is great but can't sleep with it, the soundfield is really wide but less accurate so the localization cues are worse for vidya, also can't really blast it loud at night without bothering other family members in the house. Headphones are a very good addition to that. IEM ear dildos are good if you are budgetmaxxing, but if you don't then there is 0 reason not to pick a pair of good TWS for use on the go.
*Also I would pick a good headphone over nearfield monitors without a sub any day, these things are really crippled if you don't get a proper sub in addition.
>>108092193Big thing that has been reported in Element 4s has been the wheel starting to click once the lubricant starts to wear of, but nothing compared to the pot hiss most amps get down the line.

I think saying headphones are dead is half-true, but you still have zoomers like the ETA dudes and ES Lab pushing innovation in what they do. Outside of boutique stuff though I'd be willing to concede nobody is doing anything revolutionary. Sony are meant to have audiophile stuff this year but it awaits to be seen if it's just gonna be underpowered Amps and DAPs like the TAZZY or if it'll be something of substance. They haven't really done anything amazing since the XBA-Z5 and EX1000, Z1R was fun but also super flawed.

>>108091974Headphones are always secondary to speakers but they have their uses Personally I find my HD650s to be perfectly suitable for late night listening, transcribing, and obviously videogames. Looking to spend under 200, preferably cheaper unless the quality is just so damn good. Features I like are>noise cancelling togglable, a hear-thru mode is good>either bud can work as master, do not want left bud to be inoperable if right bud isn't being used (bonus points if both buds have inputs that can work as a pause button, not just one)>decent battery life>I don't need an amazing mic but something that people can actually understand my input for phone callsThanks in advance.

I'm waiting for my TA-32 to die so I can replace it with the next hyped up meme. I wonder if something new and good will come out or if I'll settle for Laiv.Fuck xduoo
>>108094161There's an IEM thread lil bro but either way you should just watch a Jay video and pick one.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlbRuvorY2M

>>108094228then get a small one?what a stupid comment
>>108093760If this is really yours, what the fuck were you even thinking? What's the goal here? What the fuck is your TV standing on? Are you black? Your profile isn't visible in the TV reflection.
Y'all are forgetting the part where active speakers hiss and passive speakers don't. For desktop passives are just better.
>>108094249he already said it is embarrassing man you don't need to rub it in
>>108094181>Jays AudioWhat the fuck is this cancer? His so called "best" IEM that's $5000 has worse tuning than a fucking $50 IEM. What sort of snake oil peddling faggot is this? Not to mention he has a seperate ranking for tuning and tech despite distortion not being measured in a bunch of models in that tier list of his, so what is he even basing that entire category on? "Technicalities", so just tuning? That makes that redundant.
>>108094271I'm trying to see what his goal was when picking these components so I can give him advice. I know it's embarrassing, but it's not his fault for being born like this.
>>108094283I don't know retard but stop looking at IEMs over 500.
>>108094283IEMs are the real consumer slop snake oil compared to headphones. $5000 IEMS + $4000 cable and the performative males eat it up.
>>108094161>Another anon recommended trying to find a refurbished XBA-Z5 but that shit was till pretty expensive.Yeah I think I mentioned that when I recommended them, they're still pricy as fuck cause Sony tax + they were flagships at release. Wouldn't recommend them for what you want either.Just get Crinacle Zeros or something honestly if you want something half-decent that translates for games. Niko wears them when he plays CS so you know it'll cover spatial awareness.
>$5000 IEMswtf lol
>>108094297I'm not >>108094161, if a reviewer recommends shit that's worse than far cheaper models and claims it's "better" then it's just a snake oil peddler. A fucking $20 Gate or Chu 2 is better tuned than his entire IEM ranking list. Spending such a crazy amount on what is basically shittier than 20 dollar chinkshit is retarded.>>108094315Yup. The constant churning out of newer models that are shittier than older ones or basically the same also doesn't help.>>108094339See picrel. Can't make this shit up. Fucking TOTL Stax is cheaper than this, kek.

>>108094236small ones are shit
>>108094366>if a reviewer recommendsBro I'm not reading your post. He's never recommended that shit. It's just in his ranking of IEMs he's tried. He's always said not to buy stuff over whatever price bracket it was, I forgot. He has recs in every price bracket.
>>108094366The FatFreq one is funny because those basshead IEMs used to be dirt cheap until their brand got insane traction after Crinacle did a video on them. Their whole identity used to be cheap IEMs, even for professionals. They now just 20x everything because Asian hypebeasts will consume.>>108094385It's less about being poor and more just spending it well. So many of these are just 5-20x re-releases because IEM makers worked out they have the same performative male market who buy mechanical keyboard DIY kits and labubus.Only one remotely worth it in that list is the IER-Z1R, and even then refurbished XBA-Z5s and EX1000s mog it.
>>108094263Don't buy cheapshit active speakers and they won't hiss. Entry level for non-hissy active speakers is 83xx Genelec/120KHii Neumann and higher up.
>>108094330 I also want decent quality for listening to music, though not to the standards of people ITT. The only other requirement is to have decent passive noise cancelling, but I assume that would be dependent on the type of ear tip I purchase and how well it creates a seal. Was thinking of pulling the trigger on a pair of SIMGOT SuperMix 4, as the crinacle zero seems too cheap. Dunno tho
>>108094450I'll stick to cheapshit passive speakers and cheapshit speaker amps thanks. No hiss even when my ear is right next to the tweeter for $200.
>>108094450absurd
>>108094486Price =/= quality. Zeroes are proven performers even if I think Crinacle is mostly a meme. Especially in the IEM space where the price is often hypebeast scarcity shit and anime girl on the box marketing instead of actual quality.
>>108094283do you genuinely think zero red is the better IEM? not just your preference, but also actually?
>>108094609NTA but I think any non-Sony IEM is built out of the most easily breakable material and I can't fathom spending more than a few hundred on one knowing it'll shatter into pieces instantly if you fuck up once.
>>108094422Wrong
>>108094609Yes. More even treble without weird peaks or dips=better, this isn't a preference thing. If you want something with better build quality I say go for it but don't expect it to sound better than a Zero does. Crinacle's tastes are fucking dogshit but even I'll say that all the Zero models except Blue 2 are exceptionally well tuned.

Any high quality anc headphones that aren't focused on portability?
>>108094645>Yes. More even treble without weird peaks or dips=better, this isn't a preference thingyou don’t know whether storm is trading fr irregularities for other qualities you simply don’t weight or value. declaring “even treble = better” just means you’re treating your own value function as exhaustive which is preference

>>108094716I don't frequent /iemg/ and I don't know what new chinkshit they're shilling right now. The value of every IEM, headphone and speaker is in the tuning and THD. You can EQ the frequency response but if it's too shit with dips/peaks then you can't do that reliably. Same if it distorts too much.>obviously subtonic storm mogs the living shit out of zero:reds by lightyearsExplain how. And don't use the term "technicalities" unless you can tell me how exactly those are measured and quantified beyond "I hear more detail".>>108094741The only quality that sort of rise and dip in the treble might give is a perception of more spacious sound but that hardly seems worth messing with the sound signature or asking an outrageous price for something with worse tuning than much cheaper models. I'll concede that some people might prefer the storm's tuning for one reason or another, though. But that certainly doesn't make it objectively "better".
>>108094741It has non-sound qualities that people value, like updoots on headfi and appearance. The sound? Not really.
>>108094726is 53W peak per channel supposed to be a lot? D3Vs have 70W RMS/80W peak for the woofers.
>>108094804It's fine for a pair of bookshelf speakers on your desk, which is where you're most likely to want a small amp like thatIt also has state-of-the-art levels of SINAD performance
>>108094747>If you mean distortion(higher=better)no. I mean it sounds like it's price point and zero reds don't hold a candle in comparison. >don't use the term "technicalities"technicalities. >tell me how exactly those are measured and quantified beyond "I hear more detail".circular thinking. psychoacoustic effects aren't measurable like that. but you know this. FR≠everything.
>>108094645>Yes. More even treble without weird peaks or dips=better, this isn't a preference thing.more even treble on a measurement rig =/= more even treble at your eardrumalso zero red midrange is thin and shouty
>>108094828Sound quality is unrelated to the price. This has been known for years.
>>108094828Headphones and IEMs are minimum phase devices, FR and THD are literally all that matters
>>108094772IEMs are in a unique position where paying more gives you more distortion and worse comfort. When a technology is solved the only way to stand out is to go backwards.
>>108094747why would a headphone amp have 50W per channel though
>>108094828>I mean it sounds like it's price pointThere's no such thing. Abyss headphones cost 2k+ and sound like shit. DCA headphones are $500 and mog everything Abyss has ever produced. >>108094849So you don't know what a power amp is.
>>108094843You finally learned how to use the chart right, proud of you.But yeah it's right, IEMs are an absolute snake oil pit built on FOMO and hypebeast shit. >>108094849Sir they aren't for headphones (unless you like Tungstens)
>>108094863>>108094878Then why does the filename say "headphone amp"?????????

>>108094833I'm not ever claiming price run on par with sound quality. >>108094856>Abyss headphones cost 2k+ and sound like shit.yes many expensive headphones sound like utter ass. but many expensive headphones sound expensive. you can't make a $50 headphone match a well regarded $500. sorry.
>>108094927You can if it's an IEM.
>>108094914SINAD doesn't matter ever actually. The only graphs that matter are SNR at 50mV for IEMs, SNR at 5W for speakers at max power. Distortion doesn't matter ever, even in a tube amp.
>>108094716it's like judging a statue based on it's silhouette. but if you only value a very clean unembodied sort of 2d sound and outlines and separation then it kind of works too
>>108094953> at max power*and
>>108094933>matching FRis so rudimentary at this point that the practice of eqing a $5 iem to sound as good as let's say $500 should be standard and that the entire market should be flipped on its ass from that basis alone. that's never happened and it never will.
>>108094927>you can't make a $50 headphone match a well regarded $500You certainly can't but that's just because there aren't many non dogshit headphones at $50, let alone good ones. You can certainly make a $500 headphone match a $5000 one if you just EQ it. One random ukrainian dude made headphones that have lower distortion than the most expensive models. LCD-2s won't differ at all from LCD-4/5s once EQ'd to the same target etc. As long as you engineer headphones that don't distort and have a good FR or at least ones that you can EQ to have a good FR easily there's nothing higher, that is already the apex. I guess you could argue about soundstaging/imaging but that's a product of FR and the build itself, not anything related to price. There are cheap 'phones that image well and there are expensive ones that don't.
>>108094953>Distortion doesn't matter ever, even in a tube amp.why not
>>108094957what if I'm blind? I can't touch a silhouette's balls to find out if it's a male statue or not..
>>108094978>he still thinks people buy products for sound qualityLmao

>>108094999I don't think that's correct
>>108094999Now we're capping. You're confusing this with amps which pretend to be tubes but are SS. The Bottlehead Crack alone completely disproves what you're saying: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/bottlehead-crack-headphone-amplifier-kit-review.15714/
>>108093797Class D is more efficient, but still needs some cooling, even Hypex says so:>Class D amplifiers’ known high efficiency often leads to a gross underestimation of the cooling required. Pleaseapply adequate cooling to the module to ensure the module operates within specification.>https://www.hypex.nl/media/b8/33/ac/1686146768/AN_Thermal_design.pdfUsually, it doesn't need to be anything crazy, thermal coupling to a somewhat substantial aluminium plate is often enough, some of the low power modules are even rated for use without heatsink, as long as convection is unimpeded. But those really cheap Chinese amps like to skimp on that completely, and on top of that, use cheap caps that fail quickly when they get even slightly warm. And because the relevant parts are usually not thermally coupled to the case, they can run hot inside while the case outside stays cool to the touch, so don't rely on that.
>>108095004>>108095014>>108095024Clueless retard. Think about it for a nanosecond. Distortion adds harmonics. Harmonics are higher in frequency than the base. More higher frequencies = brighter sounds. So tube amps should sound brighter, right? No, the opposite is true. This is where it actually comes from - high output impedance interacting with non-linear impedance of the headphones, which often have a bump in the bass. On planars, which have flat impedance, you don't get the tube sound, you get shit sound as expected.
>>108095024>It was a good thing I did not start testing with Drop Ether CX as it was a total disaster: almost no output and what was there was severely distorted. The Ether CX has a low impedance of 25 ohm and is very inefficient to boot. The high impedance of Crack meant that hardly any power was delivered to the amplifier and what was there, was at max volume with ton of distortion. Whoever thinks distortion of this type is pleasant should listen to this combo. You were saying?
>>108095046Uh sweetie, DMS recommended me the Stackzilla and a $20k tube amp to go with my $10k Abyss planars so you're just wrong, ok?

>>108095123Wait what? I have a tube amp and planar headphones and they sound great. Am I retarded or are you trolling?
>>108095088Nah he's right, outside of Head-Fi nobody uses tubes with planars. And we know everyone not named Currawong on there is in a permanent state of psychoacoustic hell
>>108095046Btw if we assume distortion is audible in this case that sole 1dB bass boost is enough to completely eclipse the additional brightness of -47dB SINAD.
>>108095134What >>108095046 said pretty much, tubes are an impedance thing
>>108095137okay? what the fuck are you talking about? that has nothing to do with whether tube distortion is audible or not
>>108095046So are STAX tube amps oil too or do estats have the same non-linear impedance?
>>108095157nta but electrostats have crazy impedence curves usually
>>108095137Damn lmao I use tubes with planars fuck me...>>108095143Why does it sound good thoughhh? Am I fucking deaf?
>>108094737is it like $150-230 better, thoughMR3 is only $120 new, while new D3Vs are $350.
>>108095157>>108095173I think with estats the amp itself has wacky non-linear impedance, tube or not. It should be judged on case by case basis. Tubes are good for high voltage so they might be genuinely not snake oil.
>>108095195Probably just means you should give Merzbow a listen since audible distortion is in your preference range
>>108095046>So tube amps should sound brighter, right?Well, they do. Pair a high distortion tube amp with a flat impedance planar, and that's what you'll get.And the impedance effect depends on the impedance curve of the headphone/speaker, with multi-driver speakers or IEMs it's possible to actually get a boost in the treble. But usually the differences are so slight that, even in case they can be differentiated in an ABX test, it's still easy enough to deceive oneself about their nature in sighted listening, and that's all audiophools ever do. The tubes = warm meme stuck because tubes get hot, so it all makes sense, right? Similar to silver cable = cold and other such nonsense.
So do people unironically just order several speakers, keep the one they like, and return the rest? Because I'm about to do it.

Been a real long time since I posted, but I said I'd review my Verum 2. I'm not an audiophile, I'm fine with my XM5s for the convenience and ANC, but for home use I want a proper setup. I've got an Grado SR80 and HD650S, and I've decided to sell the HD650S because I don't use them anymore because of the Verum 2. I'm keeping the SR80 because they have a sound that's different enough to be interesting. They sound wonderful, but were a bit too bright for me. I like bass so I turned their low end up by 2-3db and the highs down by 4. They sound so good that they've convinced me to stop buying new headphones. They outdo my other headphones for every genre I try. I mostly listen jazz or bass-heavy stuff like DnB. I'm not great at describing audio, but it feels like they have a very wide soundstage and great clarity; it feels like I can hear the finger on a contrabass stroke in a way I can't with other headphones.Build-wise, I haven't had any issues. They fit my head well despite the floating headband (I've tried the Meze 99 and had to get rid of them because they didn't work for my head at all) I bought the pearlescent ones, they look fuckugly in a way I kind of like, except that the application method they used is shit, so it missed some of the corners. I'd go for anything else if I were to get some, but they sit out of sight on my head so who cares. In short, they've become my daily drivers by such a margin that I won't buy headphones until the day I get rich and can start fucking around for fun. They've increased my joy-of-listening by a lot!

That was back during Verum 1 days too and despite the performance, they looked a little goofy. I wanted to be the first Sash Treser itt. I do want a pair of Verum 2 though but still they're ugly and I don't really think I want another headphone in the same price bracket. I'm either gonna torture my Tres until they die or I'll splurge on some overpriced meme like Meze idk.
>>108094982>>108095046/hpg/ is not ready for such nukes, wait until they learn about distortion audibility thresholds and how you can have a fully transparent amp with 14dB SINAD.

>>108095980The easiest way is to look at the print of the model, if it is embossed then it is 100% a later model, early ones are flat Apparently there is a small amount of transition units which have embossed logo but still have black paper baffle but you can't really tell them apart unless you take off the earpads and look at the driver.

still have no idea if passives or actives are better for my deskpassives>if the amp dies you can just replace the amp>speaker themselves basically never die>amp is external so it has better coolingactives>less stuff>supposedly the amp is like, better tuned to the drivers or something>most of them don't have a volume knob on the front, so you need to buy a DAC for a knob anyway>seems like the amps die more often but idkis that it?
Why is there a separate general for IEMs?
>>108096848you really want those people here?
>>108096790>"yeah bro passives are better, you save money! they're BIFL!">look at the recommended passive speakers>they're all $1,000+>the amplifiers are $200+
>>108096885IMO If your desk setup allows you to place your speakers in the most optimal position I would spend that money. But that's difficult to do if you have a multimonitor setup, in which case just get whatever you can afford including active speakers
>>108096790Actives are better for desks right up next to you just because there are a ton of tiny active speaker options (plus you save on the amp space) BUT unless you're jewing out for 1k+ a pair neuman's or genelecs you're pretty much playing the hiss rouletteSo if you have space, cheap passives + cheap sub + cheap amp and you'll have a better setup that will never die. If you don't yeah fuck it get the adam 3s or whatever. The REAL reason to go passive is that the speakers themselves never fucking die so the used market is an extremely good option for them, whereas I would never touch used active speakers (because they're probably HSSSSSSSSSSS and it's why the owner is offloading them). You can get a great setup with used elacs or something plus a sub plus amp easily for like 500 bucks that will destroy standalone active speakers.
>>108089666what do you do in leafstan to make $300 cash for new bose
>>108096790I like the modularity and DIY-friendliness of a passive + amp setup. If the amp in an active speaker shits the bed outside the warranty period, you'd better pray the manufacturer sells the boards as spares, or you're replacing the entire thing.
>>108097080fuck, i'm looking at used actives on ebay to save money.....but they're like refurbished or open-box, sometimes from the manufacturer. you think it's just hissing returns?i live on the second floor(Yes, I am a NEET. How could you tell?) so I can't use a subwoofer. I really don't have the space either. It's just a ~12x10ft bedroom, probably in a corner even. no treatment. this guy says that treatment isn't necessary as long as your speakers are neutral and the walls are ~10ft away or less: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTshtgikT7Q>>108097129I bought a pair of LSR305s back in 2015. it was my first real audio purchase. one died after a day so i returned them and haven't had anything since. now I assume all speakers are like delicate finicky pieces of shit that will die immediately. i'm traumatized.
>>108097160The Harman Classic
>>108097160In that case I would go actives and not worry about it, you can try. People return shit all the time, it doesn't mean they're necessarily broken, just be ready to do the same if it comes to it.Love passives but honestly a lot of the work is being done with the sub and amplifier setup. Roll the dice if you like, king. It sounds like you need something tiny anyway, upgrade later when you get a semblance of privacy or you'll end up getting big bookshelves that sound amazing cranked up with a sub but be unable to use them properly and end up disappointed.
>>108096544Why are Edifiers so inexpensive? Do they die fast? I wish there was a way to tell the quality or reliability of these active speakers.
