My dad gave me his old playstation, what can I do with it?
Could I install Linux on it?
>>
>>108102038
Check firmware version and jailbreak it. You can install Linux depending what firmware it is, but PS4s are ass so I wouldn't.
>>
jailbreak it and play games
installing linux on it is low iq and retarded. it doesn't even have proper x86 instructions for things such as video playback
>>

>jailbreak it and play games
How far back? Can I install playstation 3 2 1 games somehow with it?

i'm sorry, you don't understand linux users.
endgame is getting linux running on your toaster, then compiling a kernel optimized for that model of toaster on that toaster, then recompiling your packagebase with flags optimized for that toaster on that toaster with your optimized kernel.
the toaster is never used to play video.

>PS4s are ass so I wouldn't.
I still play games on mine and it's great
>>
>>108102196
No it's too slow. You need at least a $30 pc to emulate ps2.
>>
>>108102196
>>108102557
Generally no, but there are some ports like the Uncharted collection.
>>
>>108102038
After you jailbreak it and install some games, you might consider getting an old PSVR headset. They're dirt cheap used now, and there are some cool games marooned on the old hardware.
>>
Son please put my PS4 back.

You can't really do much with it. If the optical drive still works, get some cheap ps4 games. First spider man is good. Yakuza. Whatever.
If it doesn't and you want to replace it remember to remove the PCB on the old drive and swap it on the new drive, as they're paired to the motherboard.
Afaik there aren't really any homebrew hacks that are worth it. They're pretty locked down, and even if you could hack it you'd just have a low end gaming computer.
>>
>>108103063
That's pretty cool tbf.
>>
>>108102529
It's a great legacy console since it kept getting games even into 2025.

No you don’t. There is no age or race verification here.

anon, my mind is still stuck in the ps3 days. ps4 was a blur. i haven't gotten up to ps5 yet.

i genuinely feel like a stranger in a strange land and i'm in my 30s.

The ps4 probably wasn't his dad's childhood console. He just owned one then didn't want it anymore. If he upgraded to the ps5 op might have got it as a hand me down. Op's PS4 pro is at most 10 years old, and is probably newer than that.

>Install Linux
WillRiker"NotThisTime".gif You're thinking PS2-3.

>But you can hack it an--
Why would you hack it and then put Linux on a FREEBSD SYSTEM. Be serious now.
>>

The PS4 was released in 2013. If the father was 30 years old, he would be 44 this year. Alternatively, it's possible to receive a PS1 from his grandfather; it was released in 1995. If a 30-year-old man bought one at launch, he would have been born in 1965 and would be 61 this year.

It's honestly hard to say if this is a zoomzoom (probably is) or someone with a dad who's video game savvy.
My parents had no interest in video games and just assumed it was for the kids.. Kinda weird given that my mom and dad had the Magnavox Odyssey, my mom was into programming C64 and Atari computers, you'd think they'd be more interested in how things have come a long way since their first exposure. They liked Wii Sports when it came out, but that was about it.
I've known more in my generation who had parents like that as opposed to nowadays with these late gen X - early millennial parents who grew up with them and stayed in touch with video games to this day. It's a pretty cool bonding experience for kids now I think.

You can play PS1 and PS2 games. You can also emulate older games from other consoles, but I only have experience with the latter.

There may be some graphical issues with certain games as is, so you might need to include a Lua script when creating an fpkg. You can see if a certain game needs or benefits from including a script on psx place (fair warning, the majority of non-technical users are thirdies and/or retarded). You'll need programs to convert the iso/bin/cue files into fpkgs you can use on your PS4. Some games just won't work at all. Check out ModdedWelfare's videos if you need a video tutorial for setting everything up.

These resources come in handy when adding custom homescreen icons or splash screens to fpkgs via the programs you'll use:

Solid console overall, but I wish it were able to emulate PS3 games too (not possible from what I understand), and that it had a persistent jailbreak. Depending on the firmware you're on, it can be pretty tedious to enable the jailbreak (though there are ways of automating it).

yes
i have never actually seen a ps4 before, they're still new to me
>>
jailbreak it, new exploit got released recently https://github.com/Vuemony/vue-after-free
use this for help getting linux on it https://dionkill.github.io/ps4-linux-tutorial/
its preferable to have the firmware on 12.02 or lower as the jailbreak is more stable on those

I'm in my thirties and if I had a child at the same age my parents or grandparents had their first they'd be teenagers by now.
we're old.

fun fact: the ps4 is as old now as the ps2 was when the ps4 came out :D

Play some retro games, the PS4 is a pretty solid retro console even if it didn't have the vintage hits that the PS3 had

not really relevant, you can run linux on many kinds of cpus, the ps4 isn't a pc however, so it's not as simple as chucking any old pc linux distro onto it, it required many changes to the kernel to support this is a new platform

But did you read the book?

>>

I did. Repasted even (I used MX5). I think it was a problem with the fan or the power delivered to it because it really went as hard as it could with no dips in the sound at all. Server style.
>>
>>108108683
what fucking book?

There just isn't the churn of games that there used to be. kids these days will play the same game through all of highschool. You'd play a game for a year tops before something better came along once. This will make the passage of time seem faster since there is less change happening.
>>
>>108102038

>>
>>108109113

>>
>>108109113
It's not even over. There's still games coming to it scheduled for 2026 and even a couple for 2027.
>>
>>108108974
yea it's pretty weird to me seeing my friends' kid play wow, rust, fortnight, and minecraft, while 10 years ago he played wow, rust, fortnight, and minecraft
the most popular games now seem to be the multiplayer ones that just keep getting updates for as long as they're profitable. and sure, to an extent that's not a new thing, when i was a teen there were also a handful of "lan games" which were go-to options regardless of their age, but most of the time you were playing more recent stuff, always a few games you were looking forward to playing around the corner
>>
Modding it is the best idea
Linux is an option but just get a PC.
If you mod it and for quite a bit of work you can get RetroArch on it. It does make a pretty good retro setup. I put a Bliss-Box Bridge on mine to use my older wired controllers. Helps for 3/6 button games. Or just use gamebato and get free stuff.

Could I install Windows on it?
